I actually met Eddie in Seattle after playing a huge bar. He’s one of the nicest Rock wonders I’ve ever met. He’s really an upbeat guy considering a lot of his songs can get dark!! We asked him not to forget us when they became rich and famous. So he took out names and addresses. After their 1st album came out, he sent me and my cousin a signed cover of his first album!!
Wow is right. He was probably drunk or in a really good mood. All I hear is what an asshole he is. I’ve gotten that vibe from him as well in interviews & friends who tried talking or get him to sign something & him totally ignoring & told a friend of mine to F**k off. This was back in the 90’s. Maybe he got nicer w/age, idk? But back then, not a good guy. DEFINITELY no Chris Cornell. That’s for sure. I’ve heard stories of Eddie from reliable sources that he’d tell ppl not to look directly at him backstage. Like his own roadies. Idk when you had an encounter w/him, but I’ve heard bad things. I mean it’s no secret, a lot of ppl have said it & been written about. 🤷♂️
@@keithwessel3531 My cousin Kim, married a close friend of ours Jay. His family lived in like a suburb of Seattle. Jay was into some bad stuff back in 89, but also made friends with a lot people in Seattle’s Rock arena. Before they were “Pearl Jam”, they played at a bar that Jay knew very well. So for almost a whole week, we watched them play, then partied with them after. I don’t know who you spoke with, or why they spoke of him that way. The guy I met, was a very down to earth guy. I do know he went through some dark times after losing friends. But I’ve never heard of him acting in such a way, that he would actually make anyone not look at him. He could have been caught at a bad time, or going through hard times. Fame can work against people so, who knows.
@@chrisstone5868 well, I think you nailed it. You met him Before he was famous if it was 89-90. So, I’m sure then he was cool. As soon as they were 1 of the the top bands in the world is when he changed & became a prima Donna. Like I said, it was even written in magazines. I wouldn’t know, when Ten came out, GNRS’s was my band & only heard PJ On the radio. So, I didn’t pay much attention to them. But ppl I hung w/would tell me or I overheard it. Doesn’t matter now I guess. As I said Axl was an asshole & I loved him. So, you may be bias? Both are big boys now & Axl actually is on time. I was kinda comparing Eddie to Chris. Which isn’t fair cause Very Few were like CC. But, they were all cool during the bar days. It seems the guys who’s debut album makes them go from nobody to famous worldwide are the 1’s. Guns 1st album Huge, PJ 1st album huge. Nirvana, huge. All 3 of those singers had attitude issues. Axl, Kurt & Eddie. I’m sure he’s a good guy. But fame hit all of them way to fast. 🤷♂️👍
@@keithwessel3531 Yep, I think we both nailed it. It’s to bad that Eddie has that following him. Because of the work he does to this day. Well, and yes maybe I was just a tad bias back then. I just couldn’t see this guy, who actually made a point out of asking me about my life, turn out to be “ One of those guys”. So Rock on my brother!! Good luck to ya. Hopefully I see ya down the road of ROCK!!
Aileen, you are amazing. The way you can get into the music is why you are my favorite. I'm not a Pearl Jam fan but you bring out of the song so much that I had never heard. You give me a new perspective on many performers. Thank you.
And what you were talking about at the end, about the energy, any band who has been onstage will tell you, they get their energy from the audience. The more energy the audience is giving, the more that the band gives back. They draw their energy from the crowd. That is what Lzzy Hale of Halestorm wrote their first big hit, I Get Off about. The chorus goes "I get off on you, getting off on me" and that's what that line means. That she draws her energy from the crowd watching her perform. The more they give her, the more she gives back.
Getting knocked out in a mosh pit and then saying it was all worth it, makes a real mosh pit warrior! I'm too old for it now but back in the day acting the fool and not carrying what anyone thinks was amazing fun. One video you really need to react to is Pearl Jam at Pinkpop performing Porch.
I remember when I first heard this song back in 1991. I immediately went to the record store and bought the album. Hands down one of the very best debut albums of all time!!! Finishes a close second to Led Zeppelin I for debuts in my view followed by Nirvana's Nevermind.
Before Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, STP, etc...There was Jane's Addiction. Awaiting the day you react to Jane's Addiction "Ocean Size".
One time, I was at a Ramones concert in Washington D.C. and I went down. I jumped up during Dee Dee's "1, 2, 3, 4!" (He was counting off for “Cretin Hop”) and when I came done on the following one (the beginning of the song) I twisted my ankle and hit the floor! Everyone was dancing on me and trying to avoid dancing on me. It was mental. Then, a buddy of mine who was there saw that I went down and he cleared people out of the way and grabbed me and dragged me out of the mosh pit. That's a true friend! But that's what Punk Rock is all about, baby!
speaking of your love for grunge coming from someone who lives near seattle and also loves grunge. next time you come up i recommend stopping by aberdeen to see the kurt cobain memorial its right on the river along with the bridge that so many fans have used the underneath of the bridge for art towards kurt
Great selection of Pearl Jam! One of many great songs! My favorite song is Jeremy and I hope you give it a listen! I hope you keep vibing to the grunge beat! Mosh away! Luv ya Aileen ❤️💛
Another band out around the same time with similar sound. And a band that I have to say gets no recognition for how good they are. The band is called (Kerb Dog) two song to start you off with them one, (Sally) two (Mexican wave) Give them a listen you won't regret.
Hey Aileen, just wanna start off that I love your reaction videos. Hop to see your reaction to a band called Savatage one day. In my opinion one f the most underrated bands. Fantastic songs include "Hall of the Mountain King", "Gutter Ballet", "When the crowds are gone" just to name a few. It's a bit of a mixture of metal music and classical music which I hope you'll like
Such a premonition (Im still alive), Eddie Vedder is the last living frontman from the Seattle grunge era.....Kurt Cobain is gone, Chris Cornell is gone, Layne Staley is gone.....keep living man u legend
You definitely missed out not seeing bands like this playing smaller venues with all the stage diving, mosh pits, and full tilt rocking out. These grunge bands were awesome back then. Things were so much more care free and people could let themselves go and not have to worry nearly as much about people being rotten.
And big ass candles sometimes. Anyway, it would be good to go beyond the Ten album, all first 4 releases are exceptional, and every one has its own flavour
Hell yea. I was able to see Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden in a span of about 8 months at a 3500 capacity venue. No seats. General admission. Palmer Auditorium in Davenport Iowa.
I got to see Blind Melon just before there song No Rain blew up, no lie, less than 100 people there. They were amazing. Maybe couple years later I also got to see Candle Box at a small collage, they killed it.
Ive been lucky to watch them live twice. First time during the grunge era in the 90s. It was their Ten Tour for their first album. Damn we had some realy good music back then. Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins. And ofc Nirvana and Chilli Peppers. So many great concerts. So many fond memories.🥰
Now you have to watch their performance of "Porch" Live at Pinkpop 1992. What transpires will really show you the craziness of Eddie and the talents of the band.
I find it amazing how the next generation is discovering music I grew with. I was a junior in high school when this album came out and I have so many great memories. I also saw them back in 92
30+ years later and these guys, along with Alice in Chains, STP, Soundgarden, to some of the lesser known/less popular bands from the time like the Screaming Trees, are still in my regular rotation.
You're missing a lot of great Pearl Jam. The obvious youtube video is "Porch: Live at Pink Pop 92" but there are tons of great Pearl Jam that gets almost zero shine. Check out Tremor Christ, Breath, Elderly Woman Behind a Counter in a Small Town, Indifference, Do the Evolution, and Given to Fly (just for starters).
After seeing the list for this week, I can’t wait for everyone to see all the reactions you’ve been working on for the week ahead, starting with this one!! Gonna be such a good week 😭❤️
"I love mosh pits...I ended up in First Aid...I got knocked out.."??? OMG, how could you be this perfect? That is so awesome, Aileen! You are a rocker, an unbound soul, a musician, and a true beauty! I love that about you! My favorite mosh pit was during The Jam, 1982, at University of Maryland (on "The Gift" tour). That was a crazy mosh pit! When they went into "Private Hell", I started to worry I might end up in First Aid, or worse! Other mosh pit greats I experienced were The Ramones, Living Colour, Green Day, The Addicts, and The Dead Kennedys! All amazing shows and I've got the scars to prove it!
You can't say you've had the full rock experience until you've been knocked out in a mosh pit. I've had more than a few boots to head, elbows in the face, getting bounced against the stage resulting in a concussion. Good times.
A few years ago, at a Pearl Jam concert, a guy in the crowd was holding a sign that said, " "Alive" saved my life". Eddie went to the guy during the song and hugged him and they exchanged a few words. (While Eddie was singing) You find the video on RU-vid.
Glad you're digging into more Pearl Jam. I thought it was a great reaction, dissecting the music, but I felt like you abandoned the lyrics on this one. Yes, the song is a banger and has a nice groove to shake your ass to, but hidden in this upbeat tune are some pretty dark and disturbing lyrics. ✌️
Pearl Jam has so many good songs over the years. You should totally check out Yellow Ledbetter, Immortality and Even Flow if you haven't checked those.
This song is always on my playlists. The lyrics hit me in a certain way. "You're still alive, she said. Oh and do I deserve to be? And if so...if so who answers?" That's some heavy stuff.
Hi Aileen, always glad to see you reacting to Pearl Jam, one of the best bands ever. Surprised you didn't emphase on the lyrics as they have a dark meaning, hope you can do Release " live in Holland 1992 next as it has similar subject (Eddie didn't knew about his real father until he passed away). Also, I see everyone reacting to early Pearl Jam songs and concerts, would be great if you could react to more recent ones, I would definitely recommend "Corduroy " live 2016.
I get that Pearl Jam's debut album 'Ten' is their biggest record and gets most of the attention... but Pearl Jam has a lot more records that need some reviews. Their 1998 album 'Yield' did not get the accolades it deserved, despite selling platinum. Songs from it included - 'Given to fly' ... 'Wishlist' ... 'Faithful'... 🔥🔥 Other songs from their catalog - 'Evacuation' ... 'Daughter' ... 'Immortality' ... 'Hail hail'... 'Animal'... 'Life wasted'... 🤘
I was born in 1977, so definitely Generation X, at least chronologically. I've spent my best years watching films like "Singles" and "Hype" and listening to various more or less "grungy" bands, some of which were more known, others less: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Stone Temple Pilots, Jane's Addiction, Brad, TAD and others. Even though me and my pals were just a bunch of random guys from Poland, that have never been to Seattle, we somehow felt that strange connection with this music, lyrics and messages... It was never about wearing some specific type of clothes, or some particular behavior. This was just OUR LIFE back then. Personally I've never liked the idea of limiting myself, when it comes to music, so for me it was the best time of my life, because I discovered also other styles and bands like Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, but also KIng Crimson (which for me was a natural consequence of listening to Pink Floyd for some time already), then also trip-hop, Massive Attack, Tricky and my favorite - Portishead, with nineties culminating with the discovery of my absolutely favorite band - Tool. Now, I don't remember what was the event (probably Pearl Jam getting award for the "Ten" album) - whether it was Grammy or MTV Awards, but I clearly remember Eddie Vedder, always the shy guy, coming onto the stage, holding the hand of the young boy. That boy was the same, who played in "Jeremy" music video ( my favorite PJ song, period). Eddie held the hand of the boy up high and said: "This is Jeremy, and he's Alive!" This may sound silly, but there was something magical in that moment. 9:10 Unfortunately, I've never had an opportunity to attend Peal Jam's live performance, but I remember the Ozzfest in Poland - I was there mainly for Tool, but Ozzy too, for sure. I've actually had an opportunity to talk awhile with a frontman of King Diamond support band, who was a super-nice guy. He was just casually sitting there with us, drinking beer, and telling some jokes about Celine Dion 😆 It was, God, like 20 years ago already. I remember during that concert I've lost both my glasses (I'm short-sighted) and my watch. No, nobody stole them. They were both just annihilated to the last screw, while I was pogoing with others and crowd-surfing. That was TOTALLY worth it.
Yes! This song was the first thing we heard from Pearl Jam on the radio, it litterly made us stop the car and thank god the DJ said who it was and it was their debut song on FM radio. Insta hit and soon to be superstars. From the same album do Release, another example of their musical magic. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Back in 90's after working late shift at Sky Harbor Airport I was heading east thru Tempe and when I passed "LongDongWong's" bar I noticed an unusually large crowd. I found a spot for my Harley and forced my way into the building. It seems after their concert had ended Pearl Jam had dropped in and was playing on the house bands kit. They played till about 4am(after the bar closed&locked the doors) I've had several surprises like this...paying attention to your surroundings is the key.
Hi Aileen, Fun Fact about Eddie Vetter. He is a huge Neil Young fan. Neil Young along with his wife put on a Bridge School Benefit concert for many years to raise money for disabled children and Eddie Vetter along with other members of Pearl Jam would play almost every concert. The concert was an all acoustic 2-day music festival at the Shoreline Amphitheater in San Jose and was always held the last weekend of October. They would have the disabled students sit on stage with the bands as they played. Hearing these songs stripped down and acoustic was transcendent. Many bands would show up for Neil to support the effort but Eddie was always a regular.
Great reaction aileen as always. I like it when you get in-depth with the song that you are listening to that's what makes your great in my book. Hope you and Arya are having a great lazy day at home ✌️
****I Just noticed you haven't Checked out "The Artic Monkeys"??? This Band will Impress you for sure... Top two songs... "Do I Wanna Know" and "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?both were Big Hits****
Loving your intelligent reactions as always Aileen. You really get the emotions in all you react to.Great to see you appreciating and understanding all the facets of awesome music;especially Grunge,Rock&Metal.🎶🙌🤘 Please react to some Faith No More and possibly Clawfinger.😉'The Truth' by Clawfinger and 'Everything's Ruined' by Faith No More is a good start.👌 Best reactions on RU-vid for sure.😊
Another quick comment is that Pearl Jam's lead guitarist, Mike McCready (fresh out of rehab for heroin) was a pretty tight friend with Layne Staley and encouraged him to play with a new band, as a side project, called Mad Season. Mike wanted Layne to get clean and the band was pretty tight and put out an outstanding (imho), record. Would just recommend checking out some Mad Season. Peace and, yes, Seattle is a pretty cool city.
I like Pearl Jam. Gotta give them credit for staying together all these years & to Eddie & the bands lyrics/music. They were VERY heavily played on the radio. Ten was a massive hit. This was the 1st song & I just can’t listen to it much anymore. Bc they were so commercially successful it took away from the Best “grunge” singer in Chris Cornell. Eddie’s 1st song on a record is on “Hunger strike” by Chris or TOTD. Which is 1 of the best grunge songs of all time. Chris & his bands weren’t anywhere near PJ in terms of commercial success. Just a few got radio play. Eddie is the last man standing in terms of grunge frontmen. Kurt, Layne, Scott, Chris etc all are gone to suicide or drugs or both. Which is very strange to me. Me being a big CC fan hit me the hardest. Bc of his music, but also bc he was a fuckin Great guy. Eddie is an asshole, so was Kurt. But Chris would talk to his fans, ppl & make himself available to everyone. Unless he was w/his family, especially his kids, he didn’t like pics being taken of them which is totally understandable. He was a Gentleman & had a Gentle Heart & Soul. I love watching interviews w/him. Which is the exact opposite of the band & frontman I love in GNR’s. But, I respect Eddie in that when Chris died, he was just as torn up as his biggest fans. That made me like Eddie a bit better. Mike McCready is a hugely underrated guitarist & part of making PJ as popular as they are. But if you like “grunge” I put the quotes bc it’s all metal or heavy rock to me. Just bc they were from a certain part of the country, doesn’t make them different in my mind. But my point, If you like PJ, Nirvana,STP, MMB, etc. then listen to some Soundgarden or Audio Slave, TOTD, all Chris’ bands & his solo stuff. He was & Always will be remembered & loved. Check him out. WHY CHRIS?? RIP BRO!!
Actually saw a bill of Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and Red Hot Chili Peppers at American University in DC, Nov 9, 1991. This track was mid set. Had no idea this would be the next 10 years of rock radio.
I love Kurt Cobain because he gave me his music at a time when music defined the person...or so I thought. I hated him because on April 5th he shot himself, and that was supposed to be the next wake up call after my birthday. It should have been nice, but it wasn't! Grunge music died with him. My life died with him. Until I heard Eddie Vedder….
If you like this check out Mother Love Bone. Two of Pearl Jam members were in MLB. The quick short story. MLB played Seattle Bars trying to get signed to recording contract. Get signed go to San Franisco. Record debut album. Finish album. Lead singer OD's. A sad story. Research the long story. Great album as well. His roommate was none other than Chris Cornell. Stardog Champion, Cloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns, Bone China, are some of their songs.
