The upside of acquiring a ponderous (“too many!”) book inventory at your tender age is that the more you read, the more you’ll want to read, and the growing number of unread items will weigh upon your mind and help you make the kind of important life decisions that tend to facilitate greater reading time in the years to come. Instead of going off the rails in pursuit of crazy things (think Christian Bale’s character in American Psycho) you will more likely make better decisions and be retired in your fifties as an avid reader.
Deckle-edged is what I've heard it called, but basically the same thing. Either way, it's the result of the paper-making process. Generally those rough edges are trimmed off by the papermaker but sometimes the buyer likes the aesthetic of the 'natural' edging. IIRC deckle-edged books were in fashion during the 1990s & 2000s.
Never been one for the Star Wars Expanded Universe - I only liked the stories directly centred around the original trilogy. Tales from Mos Eisely and Tales of the Bounty Hunters, plus Shadows of the Empire and original Han Solo Trilogy by AC Crispin. Still it was unfair of Disney (and Lucas at times) to consign them all to the bin, as many fans enjoyed them. I found many of them too much like a soap opera or Dynasty episodes.
That’s a great comparison to a soap opera. I too only like the ones directly related to the movies. I have a lot of Star Wars comics that loosely follow the movie plots with some extra stories but with all the characters we know and love.
Those are some great pick ups at thrift stores. I have the Hard Case Crime version of Grave Descend but that older copy is amazing. Dark Matter is ok for what it is. I read it in a day on my Kindle while resting on a beach in Mexico.
How did I not know about The Salmon of Doubt?!?! Definitely need to get a copy of that. Nice find on the early edition of John Lange. I got a bunch of the reprints from Hard Case Crime. Great haul!
Thanks man! Yeah I was pumped about the Lange book. First one I’ve found in the wild. If you’re interested in Salmon, my eBay link is in the description!
I lucked into the audio book version of Salmon of Doubt. There is some good stuff in there, and it's especially wonderful because it is read by Simon Jones.
Great video! I also picked up War of the Worlds in a recent book haul and am eager to revisit it as I haven't read it since high school. I would highly recommend the Darth Bane trilogy of which Dynasty of Evil is the final book. Even though they are not technically canon, I think they expand the lore of the Sith in interesting ways and are well written.
I consider myself a baby sci-fi reader, and I genuinely enjoyed Dark Matter, it kept me enthralled but it was also not the kind of sci-fi I was already used to. I look forward to seeing your complete take on it.
