Have a look at some clips that one of my viewers sent in, expecting me to think his driving was of a good standard. Do you see any traits like this in your own driving?
EDIT: The cammer has since been in touch and has seen the error of his ways. Have a look at his comment I have pinned on my follow up video. Respect deserved!

Those clips also represent 90% of the clips on most dashcam channels. Either overreacting to nothing just to have a clip to send in or overreacting to something they caused. People love to shout, "give way to the right", forgetting the, give way to vehicles already in the roundabout part.
@brianocampo7981
@brianocampo7981 3 года назад
That is the thing about the Highway Code, which does say 'give way to the right'. It's deliberately worded this way so that drivers who are trying to enter the roundabout should hold back for drivers who approach from their right way too fast, even if the first driver could otherwise have gotten in and claimed priority. These people somehow take the Highway Code to be law: they seem to think 'right is right' and 'right of way' is a thing. The Code and even the law clearly shows them to be wrong on both accounts. The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 say that the mini-roundabout sign (611.1) and give-way marking (1003.4) mean that the driver is to give way to another driver who is CIRCULATING in the roundabout, from the right.
@andyalder7910
@andyalder7910 3 года назад
Highway code does not say give way to vehicles already on the roundabout, it says "watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout" but it says "give priority to traffic approaching from your right" without mentioning whether they are on the roundabout or not. Although this contradicts the law it stops people racing to be first one on.

Yes this was a specific thing I looked in the Highway code about a few weeks ago many seem to think roundabouts are for coming in to land on.

Nah at least 50% of the clips are from people hooning up to the inside lane on a roundabout and being shocked when people who didn't see them or large vehicles close the gap on them. Gotta get them clips. Hang back, give everyone a bit of space, let idiots be idiots in their own little bubble where you're unlikely to end up getting hit. A 2 second delay to let someone make a mistake safely is much faster than the best case scenario of 10 minutes sorting photos & insurance details, regardless of how clear the fault is. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
@frogandspanner
@frogandspanner 3 года назад
The "already in the roundabout" seems to have got lost from the Highway Code, but not from the Law, which causes many defences of "I was coming from the right and he didn't give way, so I hit him." "mini roundabouts - good practice guidance" summarises TSS&DG 25 as "Vehicles entering the junction must give way to vehicles approaching from the right, *circulating the central island*." Many young drivers seem not to understand the "Circulating the central island". Where does this cult originate? I can' t imagine that new drivers pore over the Highway Code, looking for loopholes they can interpret as permitting hostile driving. Is there an Internet meme?

This video really resonated with me. I recognise a lot of these behaviours in my own driving, particularly the speeding up or changing direction of travel to 'punish' those who I perceive as having wronged me. This is probably the most egregious trait that I'm eradicating from my diving as it's monumentally selfish, unnecessary and potentially dangerous. Also, it must be unsettling for those that are on the other end of it who are driving in a perfectly reasonable manner or making minor errors at worst, then suddenly they've got a windscreen full of car and an ear full of horn and aggression. I started out watching dash cam vids for entertainment but ended up getting really shaken as I recognised a lot of the bad behaviours in my own driving, I realised I needed to do something about it straight away. This channel has become an invaluable source of education, reflection and inspiration to analyse everything I do on the road and try and correct my mistakes. Thanks Ashley! :-)

@jeremyashford2145
@jeremyashford2145 3 года назад
Try again. Give way, unsurprisingly, means give way. If you are slowing traffic you are supposed to give way to you are not giving way. Give way instructions include giving way to traffic at the intersection AND traffic approaching the intersection. Measured breaking and following distances (which you are supposed to know to get a driver’s licence) should be a clue to when give way applies. Getting onto the roundabout first is not part of any law. I personally don’t like the cammer’s driving but he is nevertheless correct.

@Neil Lynch *already correctly using the roundabout* could mean many things. What common sense says is don’t go looking for trouble. If you drive into someone WHEN YOU COULD HAVE AVOIDED IT you have made a bad move and you will be held liable, but that does not in any way justify their illegal action. One possible outcome is that you get to pay for repairs and they get to pay a fine.

@@jeremyashford2145 so… you should “give way when you’re already in the roundabout”, but also “avoid driving into someone” …kind of like the guy entering the roundabout after the van and nearly hitting them should have?
@jeremyashford2145
@jeremyashford2145 3 года назад
Jeremy Ashford @Woody No. You should not “give way [to someone about to enter the roundabout] when you are already on the roundabout.” In the example we are discussing that person has ALREADY FAILED TO GIVE WAY. That is ticketable. Conditions are constantly changing when you drive so that someone who has already failed to give way may later have right of way. Respond accordingly. In New Zealand a give way sign requires you to give way to those in the intersection AND those approaching the intersection from your right. Although there are differences between the NZ Road Code and the UK Highway Code I suspect that on this point they are very similar.

That would be extreme but the only biker I knew who consistently avoided any mishap on his bike was also a deap-sea diver, he applied stuff he learned from his diving hobby to his attitude towards bikes. Was on the basis that he seems to continue at full speed despite a stationary hazard in the road, before braking as last second. Surprisingly he replied to me, however his response was there was a car very close behind him and so he couldn't break hard. Didn't quite make sense as surely you'd brake softer and sooner if that was the case. He then mentioned that no ones a perfect driver, which is true, and I gave him some slack, but now seeing these extra clips of his where he thinks he's being the victim time and time again from easily avoidable issues....I feel a little less forgiving. Reality is if you're getting very close calls frequently, sometimes you should assess yourself before blaming others.

This was my first thoughts then Ashley complained at the dash cam driver of driving over the round about. If he were to take the roundabout by going 'around it he would be steering into the straight ahead lane. in short, badly designed mini roundabout and the dash cam driver could have help by driving a little more defensively, i.e slowing up more when approaching the mini roundabout.

[emphasis added] That is extremely clear that you *must* go round the painted circle, diagram 1003.4: www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002/3113/images/uksi_20023113_en_115 However, it does permit for not completely managing it: "..., unless the size of the vehicle or the layout of the junction makes it impracticable to do so..." But that does not say you can drive on the wrong side of the road or go the wrong way around it. The expectation is that as much effort as practical is made to go round the markings and if, as in the last clip, lane 2 for turning right is cut in half by the roundabout then the expectation is that the vehicle will follow a straight as line as possible before turning to be as much as possible to the left of the painted circle. In the last clip the only effort made was to cut straight across the roundabout, putting the cammer close to actually approaching the other car from the left! However the law continues "...; and (c)no vehicle shall proceed past the marking shown in diagram 1003.4 in a manner or at a time likely- (i)to endanger any person, or..." By cutting directly across the centre marking without making any effort to go round it is dangerous. Which just leaves "...(ii)to cause the driver of another vehicle to change its speed or course in order to avoid an accident." Of which the other vehicle could be said to be guilty, but having seen the roundabout the driver would have expected the cammer to go round the markings as much as possible, and as such would have, as on the first clip, cleared the course of the cammer. In other words both drivers were in breach of this law, but the actions of the cammer in failing to slow down for the hazard made the incident dangerous (an offence under another law as well as above.)

As far as I'm concerned, you can go straight over a circle of white paint, that's why they're painted, it makes them flat. A raised circle in the last clip would force you to veer left into the left lane traffic. If it's paint, treat it as the roundabout that it is (giving way to the right), but you can, and in this case should, go straight over it. The car in the second clip should not pull out onto a fast stretch of road like that, just have some patience and wait for both directions to be clear of traffic.

I agree, the final clip shows two marked lanes on the approach to a mini roundabout, this surely has some blame thrown at the people responsible for marking the road. If the cammer turning right was to not cut the roundabout they would find themselves being thrown into the cars going straight on or turning left. While the person driving in the other clips seems to be looking for reasons to have a pop at other drivers, on this occasion I wouldn't blame them too much for the final clip. Lane discipline on roundabouts is one of my bug bears with drivers, if they don't have clearly defined lanes (where one or more lanes can clearly be marked) drivers have a complete disregard for anyone but themselves. This creates issues for people like me where I do try to remain in a lane (imaginary or otherwise) and those looking to enter the roundabout as I'm on it often have to brake as they think I'm going left... But watch my signals please people.

However, I don't like how the cammer handled the situation, they seem very aggressive in all the clips and would probably benefit by learning some defensive driving techniques.
@GlensTransport
@GlensTransport 3 года назад
Yes, they made a mistake, I'm guessing they misjudged a gap in the traffic from the other direction and got stuck in that position, but from point where the video starts they are already in the road and the cammer had more than enough time to safely come to a stop and wait for the car to move.

I dont think he he's saying the car pulling out was correct, but simple better observations from the cammer meant he wouldn't have to brake hard, he could have easily slowed down gradually and more controlled if he'd read the road ahead better.

In the first clip he was a plonker. I think in the second and third clips he had a point. The guy should not have been pulling out of that layby against traffic and then waiting for a gap before merging. The van did cause the cammer to break and should have waited. He also doesn't seem to understand how mini roundabouts work.

The psychology is so important: drive A to B safely & without incident; don't cause any near misses, or issues with pedestrians & drivers. Unfortunately, some have a gladiatoral view: it's a competition, a race, you have to 'beat' everyone, prove you're right, hold this bit of 'your' road at any cost! Even if risking an accident, drivers with this attitude won't be sensible, forgiving, relaxed etc. They wonder why driving is SO tense & unenjoyable.

This is why I stay on the right side instead of the left to pass when on the Roundabout. I don't want to be beside that driver who realizes they're missing their turn, turns and turns into me. I've seen multiple bad driving mistakes on this same roundabout. One lady driving the wrong way had decided she was gonna drive down the wrong way on a single lane where I was and actually stopped in the middle of traffic facing me, like I was gonna back up to allow her in when I'm One Way or gonna drive onto the sidewalk to let her in. She turns and continues driving the wrong way. Another driver saw this and even drove on the sidewalk to follow her the wrong way. Another vehicle however I witnessed had missed their turn, but continued on the Roundabout making a big circle until coming back to their turn.

The last clip is unavoidable, two lanes going into a single lane roundabout. If someone follows the rules here they are likely to cause an accident with anyone who is in the first lane going straight. It would probably be better if they ripped up the roundabout and replaced it with traffic lights or remove the second lane.

@stretchedits

Hi Ashley, some interesting thoughtful clips there. The mini roundabout clips are always contentious, who entered the roundabout first etc etc. One worrying trend which I see everyday on the roads, especially in our ever busy cities is the one of the car exiting the layby, who pulled across one lane even though the other wasn't clear, thereby blocking the road. I agree your dashcam driver didn't help as they didn't slow down, entirely too quick for the situation............but I think this is a very dangerous practice which I see happening more and more, and can only one day lead to horrific accidents happening, especially if done on a high speed ie National Speed Limit two way road.
