I do miss the 13 episode seasons, we did not get a lot of time with Ruby and the Doctor, actually seeing them having adventures on other worlds and seeing more of how they both work together. The Doctor working things out, science and so forth.

Great review, and you made very valid points. I pretty much agreed with all of them, so I would say that! I'm especially glad you picked up on the lack of science, which is something that irked me too. Growing up with Classic Who fired my lifelong passion for science, studying it at school and university. Sadly, I'm just not getting that from RTD2 so far, to the extent that I even found the idea of UNIT having a 13 year-old Scientific Adviser totally ridiculous. The way RTD wrote Morris - and his predecessor Shirley - just didn't convince me that they were scientists. Compare and contrast with Osgood and Liz Shaw. Even Malcolm in "Planet of the Dead" was a more credible boffin, although the wonderful Lee Evans played up the comic/eccentric aspects of his character. I look forward to more of your reviews in future. Keep up the good work!

it's adds a new level of failure because it's not some obscure episode, but the one written by neil gaiman.

There were so many issues with the new season. Rant incoming. Space Babies was just too childish for a doctor who audience. Those kinds of fart and bogie jokes barely worked in the SJA, a show literally aimed at kids. The story had basially no substance to it apart from a hastily done Abortion commentary halfway through. Devil's Chord wasted a decent chunk of its runtime on a repetative musical number that didnt need to be there, and trying to explain to Ruby who the gods are, since RTD's new "20-30year progressive american audience" dont have that context. People are praising Jinx's performance, even though he just acts like every other Drag Queen on tv. BOOM sounds good on paper, until you realise you put the protagonist out of action for the entire story, threatening us with... the death of the protagonist in episode 3 of his first season? We know thats not going to happen. There are no stakes in the entire episode. They've done the corporate overlord commentary before, and have done it better before. So the episode really just doesnt stand out. 73 Yards starts off pretty strong. I don't mind a Doctor-lite episode, and when Ruby is in the pub/hotel in wales it has this great claustrophobic horror style which is pretty much instantly ditched and then the entire episode shifts focus to its political messaging. We also know, just like with epsiode 3, that there are zero stakes, since as soon as they start aging Ruby, we know its all getting undone by episodes end. We wasted an entire episode of the shortest season in Doctor Who history that needed to be used to further one or both of our protagonists, but instead its all literally undone by the end, leaving us exactly where we started. Dot and Bubble is a bland stupid story that's more or less banking on you being "progressive enough" to notice slight hints of racist tones to actually get invested in the story. Tones that I and nobody I know actually picked up on, since we don't give two shits about the skin colour of actors. It's not an investing point for me, so all that racial messaging went right over my head, so when RTD hits you over the head with it at the end, it feels like its coming out of nowhere. Ncuti and Millie give great performances in the last few minutes, but for most of the story they're completely irrelevant. Not to mention the massive plot hole of why the device is creating an army of maneating slugs when they can just... fling themselves through everyones brains? If you ignore the racial messaging, the story is just fucking terrible. Rogue is a more standard doctor who story, but get out of here with the dumbass falling in love angle they give 15 and Rogue. The Doctor doesnt go around falling in love with strangers, and when he does, it's not going to be with bounty hunters who literally kill people for a living. That's so out of character its actually ridiculous. Episode 7 is a waste of an episode entirely. Nobody does anything for the entire plot, only to waste the last half of the episode revealing a 50 year old villain that the "20-30 year progressive american fans" wont have any fucking context for. RTD and CO went on the media circuit austracising old fans, and then wastes a full episode on a huge reveal that means nothing to the people he's apparently writing the show for! Episode 8 was just RTD at his usual stuff. Setting ridiculous stakes that you know are going to be Deus Ex Machinad to the point where it never happened in the first place. His big bad ancient monster that is apparently more dangerous than the Daleks is defeated via hithcing him to the back of his truck and driving full speed down a road. He kills the greatest threat in history... via dragging death. And this whole "What happens when you bring death to death?" angle is the biggest asspull ive ever seen, and thats saying a lot from an RTD finale. There is so much more wrong with the season than just this. I havent touched upon the complete lack of characterisation for Ruby, or the lack of bond between them making the goodbye feel hollow. Or the mother being nobody making absolutely no sense, or even the fact that when the protagonist cries in literally every single episode, then its impossible to get emotional investement in anything that elicits that reaction. Just AGH.

Ruby was the only good thing about this season, aside from maybe bringing back Gabriel Woolf as Sutekh. However, considering how badly Retarded Trash Davies butchered Sutekh, Woolf's voice acting couldn't save him no matter how chilling it was. If you want to listen to Woolf working with great scripts, watch Pyramids of Mars, The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit.

I’ll have to rewatch the whole flux storyline again! It’s been awhile. So unfortunate for Jodi because I enjoyed Jodi a lot but a lot of her storylines were a miss for me.
