ABOUT ME
I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city s a Police Officer and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 1200 breeding ewes.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Since starting The Sheep Game I have met Lizzy and had two incredible boys Jock and Angus. You will see them all on this channel!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

@@hinata-wolf dunno if you're from the uk or not, but if not, in the uk it's very common for sheeps fields to be on common public walking paths, therefore it's very common to be wandering on livestock fields - however every place where you'll be entering field there are signs especially in lambing season reminding you to keep dog on lead and that farmers will protect their herd at the expense of your dog if need be. it's not irresponsible in the area to be in the farmers' field but it is irresponsible for your dog to be off lead in it. Wanderer's rights are a big thing in the UK - you are allowed to responsibly walk through someone's property, not doing any harm, but as he said, having an off-lead dog is not responsible wandering. I one time on a public trail in the Peak District had to tell someone to put their german shepherd on a lead before they reached the already-dead sheep i'd passed a quarter mile back - and one time in the same section I saw two off-lead greyhounds. Absolutely mad.

I finally know what that staff is for, which is always associated with sheep/herders. It was absolutely fascinating to see that ewe utilizing the “playing dead/catatonic” tactic, and then to see her hall ass as soon as you gave her just a bit of room. So sorry for your loss. I’m wildly pissed off at the level of disrespect, ignorance, arrogance, and just blind stupidity of that dog owner.

Graeme , Here in the USA a farmer can take action in this kind of situation if you get what I am saying . My Father In/Law had to several times even later in his life . A neighbors dog was wiping out his Ducks & Chickens Dad had not crossed the creek in yrs . The dog had his Rooster in it`s mouth Dad threw his cane at the dog. We were called to go help I think we got home around 1 am . We butchered all the Chickens & Ducks we found that the dog had unlived I think around 20 of them . Yep Dad called the law we found the owner they had to reimburse him for all his loss of livestock . That`s the law here in Ohio .

So frustrating how people are on this off-leash nonsense. Just put your dog on a dang leash, especially if you're in farm land / public areas. It'll prevent your dog from getting hurt AND you won't have to pay for another person's injured animals or god forbid any hospital visits for said people. It's so simple yet so many don't think about any of this 😮‍💨 I just can't comprehend how selfish some people can be.

In Arizona it's illegal to not have your dog under control. You can have your dogs seized and get *hefty* fine. I have had problems with owners that can't control their dogs trying to kill or killing my animals and going after me. If you can't voice control them, keep them on a leash and take them to obedience classes. Our Dobie was an attack trained guard dog and obedience trained. Her I would trust, but I would still leash her around farm animals. Even a dog with training up the yin yang can break control, just don't risk it I have no patience for bad dog owners any more.
@stephcharlie
@stephcharlie 5 месяцев назад
@@PhantomQueenOne it's also illegal to have a dog out of control in the UK, people just don't seem to care. A farmer is also entirely within their rights to shoot an out of control dog that is attacking livestock so even if these people are too selfish to care about other people's animals, why would they risk losing their own for the sake of a leash? I totally agree that I don't care how well trained a dog is they are not robots and something could happen that results in them acting uncharacteristicly, your dogs leash is your guarantee should that happen. Unless your dog is specifically trained to work with livestock, and is working with your livestock (or is working with permission from the livestock owner) your dog should never be off lead around livestock.

@stephcharlie
@stephcharlie 5 месяцев назад
@@saltyc3194 don’t get me wrong, there is no substitute for good training but my point was to keep dogs on leads anywhere where mistakes could be problematic. Your lead is your last defence if something happens and training goes out of the window so it’s the owners responsibility to make sure that the dog is on a lead, preferably 6ft or less under close control anywhere where mistakes become dangerous like near livestock and near roads etc if you have a dog that is able to slip a flat collar get a martingale or a harness, preferably one with a strap that goes behind the ribcage for escapologist dogs. I have put a lot of time into ensuring that my dog is well trained and often she gets complemented on her behaviour and obedience (we often hear “I wish my dog would do that when out and about”) but I am under no illusion that she is perfect so I ensure she’s on her lead when she needs to be and only off lead when it’s safe.
@elainerempel1613
@elainerempel1613 5 месяцев назад
I also hate those extensible leashes because in an emergency the owner does NOT have immediate control of the dog. Dogs are predators, hard-wired to chase. People are supposed to take the time to train them. If your dog won't reliably "Come" when it's distracted by a rabbit or a squirred, you have NO business walking it offleash.💕💕

Those poor sheep. It's a nightmare for anyone with stock. My own sheltie went AWOL after 7 years of reliable behaviour as a rural watch dog. Had always kept home, kept roos out of the garden. Sheep in paddocks on 2 sides. Never a problem as I'd taught her young to ignore. But, new neighbours had roaming chickens who came onto our land. I didn't pay attention. She later went after neighbour's chickens and got through a fence gap made by a roo. Result? Can't trust her with stock ever, and she's now locked in the house garden. Only outside on a long line. It was my fault - the fence line was not checked enough, and I didn't read my dog. Hope your ewes are OK.

I had an uncle and aunt in New Zealand who were dairy farmers. They also raised a small flock of sheep. My uncle told me that if he saw any large dog running loose on his property he would shoot it on sight; all farmers did that then and the law allowed it. They weren't cruel people; most of them owned dogs themselves, and knew what the risks were if their own dogs got loose and ended up on another farmer's property. But they just knew the amount of damage a single dog could do.

@@stephaniesummers7452 Yes, I know. Sadly, once we began the project of fencing in our ten acres, and building a barn, my dad began to show his dementia. I love the sheep, despite how physically challenging they are. Interesting how, after I wrote my comment yesterday, I decided to bring my sheep out of the pasture for a trot round the property, lambs and all. Then my sister or niece let all three dogs out. And two of my sheep are first time mothers, with lambs less than 2 weeks old. (This is a four-horned variety of sheep).... and the instant one of my first-timers saw the dog, she just CHARGED and pancaked the dog against the house. Dog survived, but my niece got a bit of a shock because the sheep have never done anything but run away from her dogs. But the first-timer was just a lamb when my niece moved in, and has been chased and worried by those dogs her whole life. There was no way she was going to allow them to attack her babies. I don't like to see any animal injured, but I felt some vindication as to why it might not be a good choice, if you love your dogs, to let them out in the pasture. Particularly this year, as I'll have six, possibly seven ram lambs I'm going to be raising up for the next year, and those things are LETHAL. They'll all have observed my one ewe going blitzo on the dogs, and they'll remember. Of course we won't even discuss how ludicrous it was for anyone to let the dogs out of the house without a leash while I had 18 sheep and 4 goats going for a "walk" outside the front door. My daughter is a veterinary nurse from OK, living for a year in Scotland and she went to a local sheep farm to help with lambing today. The pictures she sent are awesome and a video of her delivering twins. As she usually (here in the States) works with horses/dogs etc., it was fun to see her working with the lambs. On another note, if we have dogs running cattle/horses/sheep whatever, we dispatch them to the hereafter. I hate that we have to do it but that is a very hard habit to break a dog of, and especially if their owners don't care enough to keep them in a yard.

A neighbour of mine wanted to put his Jack Russel in my front garden to see how he reacted to my cat( who was used to my trained dogs) . I just said to him do you want a dead dog? I was not joking as 2 dogs came over my high wall and attacked my pups and I had them put down by SPCA so I mean it. I think you need to toughen up and not be so soft. Where we live you pay a hefty fine if your dog is off leash. Plus you need to have a rabies vaccination and tag every year and every two years you need to pay $45US to the county for a registration tag. If your dog attacks another animal on private property they are quarantined for a period of time and you pay a fine. If they bite a person they are put down. And still with all of these rules you see owners unleash their dogs and let them run around the football fields and play areas. This hunting is legal in Vermont and Morgan is trying to make changes through the legislature. While I realize your two circumstances aren’t exactly parallel, the law protecting irresponsible dog owners is similar in spirit. The property owners (farmers or not) have very little power. They can follow rather draconian no-trespass signage laws, but if the perpetrator pulls the signs down and claims they were never there, the property owner has no recourse. Hope the remainder of lambing is relatively drama-free. Best wishes to Lizzy!

I've had mountain lion attacks that I have not seen happen but have had to clean up the aftermath of, it's horrible. Watching the attack happen I think is far worse. The sheer number of dog attacks around the UK is stunning. I just can't believe people are so entitled to take their dogs on private land and let them off ! When I lived in the UK (Thetford/Norfolk) there was a forest area where you could let dogs off lead but mine were also highly trained Schutzhund competition dogs. No livestock around, I would never think of letting a dog off lead with livestock around, just insanely irresponsible and could end up with deadly consequences. Dogs that bother livestock in the US are typically SHOT. I'll be in the UK visiting Cowley Hill farm and some Horse Instagram friends, Hopefully I can get up to see Cammie and Lizzy. I also lamb outside but I moved my lambing season to fall since the weather is more reliable in September than in spring which is our California rainy/storm season. I did spring lambing a few times and it was horrible. Had to keep the lambs/ewes in my barn through the storms for weeks.

Always wondered what the shepherds hook was for. It's fun to what in action.

My word! I am exhausted just watching this video! I don't know how you can maintain this energy for the entire lambing season. Prayers to you all. (BTW...loved seeing the affection between you and Lizzie

Not to put too fine a point on it, but had that dog been attacking livestock here in Idaho, the dog would no longer be with us, and the owner of the dog would be facing criminal charges. The livestock owner would not face consequences for eliminating the threat to his/her animals. I am sorry you don't have that level of ability to control the threats to your flock.
