Another evening on the River Bann.

I thought that I would try my luck on the river Bann, close to my home in Tandragee. The river contains mostly coarse fish such as Pike and Perch but it also has a run of Salmon and Dollaghan( Lough Neagh migratory trout) at certain times of the year.
As it turned out it was a beautiful, tranquil evening with less of a flow on the river than I expected. Salmon and Trout are more likely to be caught in a falling flood. It was however, an interesting session which has piqued my interest sufficiently to make me want to have another go under better conditions.
I must apologise for the annoying camera noise during most of the video. The chest mount was creaking and groaning like a good'un and the securing strap of my landing net banging against it was just the cherry on the cake. I promise to take more care in future.
This stretch of the river is regarded as 'Free fishing' as no permit is required, only a valid Coarse or Game rod licence to keep on the right side of the law.
Enjoy the video and hopefully, I'll get back to the Bann soon.
Alistair.

why you put the bail alarm over with your hand after casting instead of turning the handle thats why it has a spring? that reel could be doing with backed out a bit aswel.

Thanks for that Mark. A bit like myself, the reel is old and frequently doesn't release the bail arm after turning the handle so I just flick it over manually.

Hi Alistair, take a long blade of grass, hold between thumb and fore finger. Touch tip of grass to electric fence, and slowly move blade of grass forward so your hand is moving closer to electric fence. You will feel the pulsing of fence if on!

Good man Ray, I'll give it a go next time I encounter a fence. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hello Alistair. I grew up in Lurgan in the 60's and 70's and have very fond memories of regularly fishing this stretch of the Bann with my younger brother and some school pals. Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane. I have heard the stretch below the part you fished is now abandoned in terms of agriculture and almost totally overgrown and inacessible due to being totally taken over by willow scrub, gorse and weeds. Is this true? I was also a "junior" member of the Armagh anglers in those days and had many great days on Segahan, Tullynawood and Shaws Lake with my late father. Happy days! I'm now a subscriber to your channel and look forward to following more of your fishing adventures past and present! Thanks for sharing them

Hello Richard, firstly, thanks for watching and commenting. To be truthful I don't really fish this stretch too often, maybe once or twice a year, but it does seem rather abandoned at the minute. I used to do quite a bit of Pike flyfishing further downstream. I would park up at Moneypenny's and fish from there downstream to the Point of Whitecoat. This is going back some years, maybe 15 - 20 and I did enjoy great success on the fly. Then, as the years progressed, the Pike just became less numerous to the point where I stopped going. I will hopefully give it a throw some time soon and see if things have improved. I will, of course, have the Gopro with me and post a video of the adventure. I never had the pleasure of fishing Tullynawood in its heyday, which is a shame as I've heard so many folk talk about it in glowing terms. The club is currently looking into the feasibility of perhaps trying to get it up and running again. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for the quick reply Alistair. I'm living up in Ballymena now but could be tempted to make a trip down to the Bann again sometime soon for old times sake🤔. We also had good sport at the canal just above Moneypenny's (mostly small Jack pike) and at metal bridge on the Bann at Moyallen (I visited recently when out for a motorcycle ride ...another thing we seen to have in commom 🙂... and was dismayed to see the riverbanks covered in giant hogweed plants). I look forward to working my way through your fishing and 'biking videos and to the ones still to come, tight lines! 👍

@@richardjohnson3463 Yeah, I've seen a few guys fishing directly above the Metal bridge for pike presumably but the stretch downstream is fairly inaccessible due to the Hogweed and various other bankside vegetation. First decent day I'll take a dander and sus it all out.

It's tricky to describe exactly how to get to that very spot but if you park on the Mullahead road close to where it crosses the Cusher river and the canal then take the open, downhill entrance into the field that will take you down to the Bann. Google maps would help.

Is that just down from Knox bridge mate?
@AlistairCampbell1047cc
@AlistairCampbell1047cc 2 года назад
Yeah, that's the very spot. I park back at the canal and dander down through the fields. It takes me out downstream of the wee link channel and means that you can fish the whole way to the Point of Whitecoat if you want to. It's fairly overgrown at the minute which probably means that it's not getting fished too much.

Do salmon travel that far up? I honestly never thought that ran the upper bann

Thanks for watching Ryan. Yes, they run the full length of the river right up to the headwaters above Hilltown. I've seen many over the years but yet to catch one.

I'm a bait angler I've never left rubbish after me on a river , typical is a very harsh ridiculous statement to make. Very few angler's of any kind leave rubbish.
@AlistairCampbell1047cc
@AlistairCampbell1047cc 4 месяца назад
I'm sorry to have offended you Catherine. Whilst I appreciate that not all bait anglers leave rubbish behind them, it's just my experience on this particular stretch of water that the rubbish that is left, generally pertains to bait angling.

Another great video Alistair!!! I haven’t went spinning in years. You got a lovely evening for it and a few nice fish there. I was hoping you’d get a shock from one of those electric fences for entertainment purposes! Just sat and watched it on my lunch break, thanks for sharing!

"Typical bait angler" Please don't tar everyone with the same brush. I have witnessed many spinner packets left behind on river banks. This rubbish may have been from a bait angler but it is not solely bait angler's that litter. I've seen fly only fisheries littered also.
