This videos is of today's short day of sawing up a nice Black Walnut Log. Despite the rain I was able to get about 6 nice slabs out of this log before calling it quits.

The first time I got lathe time in my high school wood shop, it was with walnut. I've been in love with walnut ever since. I love the grain, the smell, etc. Bald cypress is a close second for me.

A great video. This came up on my recommended. Glad I watched it. I just sold my 47 wood acres. I had a lot of good hardwoods, and a derecho wind came through in 2011 and knocked down and broke off some premium walnuts, cherry & other great trees (130 mph winds for 1/2 an hour). I did hire a forestry consultant who walked the mess for 3 weeks, marking tree & itemizing everything for a bidding process. Went through the bid and it was logged out the next summer. The sawmill hired a Mennonite man to log, who was super to work with. Took 3 months to cut down/salvage 1,037 trees. It is a pleasure to see what the end product can be and is satisfying that I turned my lemons into lemonade. I ended up with 3 miles of trails, and lots of new trees growing. I took the state forester's advice and placed cardboard boxes with walnuts on the stumps throughout the timber to allow the squirrels to plant them for me. The tops on the ground helped protect the seedlings from the deer browsing. Sadly, I sold the property with its beautiful log home, but I am aging and a single woman taking care of all that was getting too much. A nice young family can now enjoy and make this their forever home. Thanks for the great video, and sharing the beauty of the bounty that trees provide.

No mystery at all. Walnut is the most beautiful wood of all. Nearly all of the furniture I make is from walnut. I have been working walnut since my high school woodshop class (50 years ago) and I still get excited when I look at the grain, smell the wood as it is being worked, marvel as I fit pieces together so easily, and then watch the grain transform to something heavenly when I apply the oil finish. Oil and wax is all I ever use to finish walnut. Even when I go to Home Depot, I always stop at the walnut section in the lumber yard for a couple minutes to admire the wood. It is not the best quality walnut at Home Depot, but I am still amazed at how beautiful it is. Hope you enjoy this wonderful wood like I do.

In Wyoming we have cottonwood, pine and aspen. Walnut is an expensive import, and walnut trees are abundant as unicorns. Watching you expose this indescribably beautiful creation is a truly spiritual experience. My friends look at me real funny when I tell them how much I enjoy watching videos of some stranger 1,500 miles away cot logs on a sawmill. But you expose glory. That never gets old, either.

Absolutely. I'm here in Colorado and each one of those slabs would run in the several hundred dollar range, if not close to 1K per slab. There is no walnut to be found here and we have blue spruce, pine, aspen and cottonwood here as well. I've had friends of mine say there is Russian Olive in eastern Colorado, however I have never come across it. There was a small slab (maybe 12 inches by 36 inches) at my local hardwood shop and it was over $200 for that small piece of wood. People back east burn oak in their stoves and it is painful to watch!

Amazing to see such a huge piece of valuable and rare Black Walnut. I've just recently moved onto a 12 acre homestead where 10 acres of it are forest. I've already planted 10 Black Walnut seedlings. (Next year I will plant even more). I will not live long enough to see them come to full maturity but somebody down the road will come to realize what a gift that is.

Usually stop and pick up those black walnut nuts, dry them, the EAT THEM, that has got to be the TOUGHEST nut there is, in Nov, I had 30 of them., once I put some on a tray in the sun to dry out when I came home there were ALL GONE , ,,, SQuirells

Isn't walnut exceptionally rough on sawblades? I've worked it just a few times and it's unquestionably a very hard and heavy wood. It seemed like it ate up sawblades pretty fast. More than oak or maple in your experience?
@rudybigboote3883
@rudybigboote3883 6 лет назад
Pneumatic, walnut is really not that hard of a wood at all; it is really an easy wood to work with. I use it to make guitars and some wood art pieces. I found that it cuts well, planes well, and routers well. It is also very easy to carve and shape by hand using files and sandpaper. Overall this one of my favorite woods to work with.
@clarkschwenke1
@clarkschwenke1 6 лет назад
I’ve always loved it for carving, both for the aesthetics as well as the workability. I work a lot with endcuts, slab, and what most consider to be “firewood”, and it carves nice green as well as seasoned. I’ve found it with inclusions varying from purple to green within the heartwood. I use natural finishes and that doesn’t seem to affect it much either.

I used to be a tower crane operator in the UK and I did a few builds where we were using oak as frames for balconies and we used to get the wood from France sometimes when we were cutting it like this u would open it up and find musket balls embedded in it where during the various wars the uk and France had had they had shot at each other but hit the trees u could tell they were old as they were Brown Bess size musket balls and the tree had just grown around it

Speaking of wood from France, at the time that Notre Dame was put up, the builders had to send for the roof beams from a pretty far distance, because there weren't enough trees of sufficient size left in the Paris area. I think that was around the year 1200.

Wow, thank you for this video! Viewing this gorgeous walnut brings back memories. My Great Grandfather was a Jouneyman Cabinet Maker who immigrated from Great Britain in the 1920's when my Grandmother was in her early 20's. She soon married & had my father, an only child. My Dad was babysat by Great Grandpa Hopper & he had my Dad work right alongside him. Mixing horse hoof glue, pedaling (no electricity) a wood lathe & making beautiful tables & jewelry boxes with mine being one he made at 81 yrs old. He collected the neighbor's trees when they chopped them down so seeing the grain got me so stoked! Like you said, it never gets old. What a rare piece of wood because there aren't many black walnut trees that live that long, straight & beautiful. They're mostly grafted here & back several generations with English Walnut for farm production. Thank you for sharing. What beautiful items may this tree make?

Why are they grafted? Is it to do with black walnuts poisoning the soil?
@kimcwhite6509
@kimcwhite6509 6 лет назад
I'm not sure, but I think because they have a stronger root system? It's so sad to see almost all of the old walnut orchards getting ripped out for grapes. They do sell the lower trunk for $$ for burl, & sometimes they're stolen before the buyer can pick them up. I live in Lake County in Northern California & we used to be the 'Pear Capital of the World.' Sadly, most of the pears were torn out by the 90's for wine grapes. We have had 9 fires in 3 years & the Medocino Complex roared through & is still burning in the beautiful Mendocino forest as we speak.

If you would bury those walnut logs for about 6 months in a damp spot the bark will bleed stain into the white wood and the heart will get much darker. I had a LT 40 and loved sawing gun blanks out of walnut and curly maple.

Plant more buddy!!! My grandfather lived on the same farm his whole life and when he was 78 he looked down towards the riverbottom he had been cutting trees on every fall for the past 75 years and said "ive been cutting trees my whole life, but it doesnt even look like ive made a dent!" Treehuggers have nothing to fear from guys like this theres just not enough time in your life to kill all the trees (and most oxygen comes from bacteria so dont let them lie to you we.dont need trees to breathe)

Nathan.... if you will take a fresh cut off the end of the log (just a few inches with the chainsaw) before you saw it, your blades will last twice as long. I usually cut them while they are in the lifting cradle. That first few inches into a dry log really stresses the blade at the gullet....and we all know blades will make you or break you!! Go buy if you can find a piece of black walnut wood 20" x 9' x2" thick, you better have some gold in your pocket, or you can't afford. Walnut growers very slow and is strong almost as steel. If making shelves it won't hardly bow. And never put sawdust in horse or mule stall, it will make them go lame!!!!! Tell a friend pass it on.
