I'm very impressed by how neat and tidy Josh's farm is . A place for everything and everything in it's place. I can see how having another grower give their opinion on set up is important, Often we don't see things about our own space the same way as others do. You two seem to have a "good vive" and I enjoyed this very much.

Jessie the slight slope in the tunnels are would allow water to drain if large rains occurs, although in dry times you may need more water to keep the moisture level 😀

I notice in the tunnel that the tube ribs are in-side of the skirting board, and I assume the rope tie down goes under the board so the rope and plastic goes outside the board. I am about to put up my farmers friend tunnel and I was going to put the tubes, skirt board brackets and tie downs outside of the skirting board. What you have done seems to be an important detail that I had not considered. Can you comment on the benefits of this setup, and perhaps in a future video to point this out. Also, how do you anchor your tunnel to the ground to prevent it from blowing away As always, I love watching you guys. Thanks for all you do!
@JoshSattinFarming
@JoshSattinFarming 2 года назад
Mainly to have a bit more space inside the tunnel and the boards could potentially be part of a roll-up side system. Details in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bBPTO9ORvxQ.html

Hi Josh! Im from Europe and i really like your setup. Would you mind sharing the brand of tunnel you installed ? Ive been looking for something similar, they are not too big for a starter and im guessing they are more resilient vs strong winds than other tunnel types. Almost had a tunnel collapse last year because of unusually strong winds.

I'm really wondering why there is so much difference between greenhouses abroad from the ones we have in Japan. I wonder if it has to do with typhoon and earthquake rigidity. At widest our tunnels have a 60cm pitch, and usually have an internal skeleton frame also. I have two different style tunnels here and neither one is like the ones I see anywhere else in the world. Feeling like ours are a bit overkill and thus, more expensive than necessary.

Josh, my one question is why did you decide to have your tunnels run E-W rather than N-S which is common to people farming in the upper latitudes?
@JoshSattinFarming
@JoshSattinFarming 2 года назад
I think orientation doesn't matter that much for most situations. This is the only way the tunnels will fit in my space. More details in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0kFa7hhxCaU.html

Josh, I wonder if you could fill the space between the "close tunnels" with loose mulch like straw or leaves, maybe 3 feet deep. Since you get those shadows at the low point of the walls anyway, why not fill it up with insulation and create sort of a sunken tunnel effect? My only concern is whether that would damage the tunnel walls. But if you solve that problem, you'd actually create a "leaf mulch bin" between each tunnel for the whole length, where you could pull it out annually and harvest the compost at the bottom. Just an idea - I'm sure I'm missing something big...
@JoshSattinFarming
@JoshSattinFarming 2 года назад
I thought about filling in between the tunnels with wood chips but when we get a heavy rain event I want the water to move away as quickly as possible. I am almost a year in with this setup and it works great. Everyone's context is different, but I need the water to move away and not soak in. Also wood chips will move downhill with the rain events we get.

From someone who also lives in a rural area, I can tell you population density is a key factor in being able to sell product. However, median income and demographics are also super important. We work two farmers markets. One market, the clientele is very interested in how we grow and the lack of pesticides and herbicides. The other, they care more about price/value for the product. Guess which one we produce better sales from? The most successful market gardens are located within an hour of or inside major metro's. It gets substantially harder the more rural you become.

I am frustrated out of my socks with the idea of spending trillions of dollars to change the structure of our society. However, one item deep in the gigantic bill is; "$55 billion to promote climate-friendly farming and forestry research programs" I hate government interference but we must set aside this bias to promote responsible small farm research. If all the RU-vid channels who are showing the advantages to the environmental just farming would band together to do peer-reviewable research imagine what we can do to help return to sound family farming practices to reduce erosion, pollution and factory farming practices harmful to air-borne carbons. Who can get the ball rolling to prepare to influence at least a little how this money is spent?
