i know this was only a small part of the video, but i had to pause and say i absolutely hated being tested on reading ability and being told you have to read only in this certain level. i also tested high and while about half my classmates got to read captain underpants the other half had to read stuff like eragon in the same time frame. complete bs

Oh my gosh. I'm a high school English teacher and it truly saddens me how many students do not like reading or have been turned off from reading by the time they get to me. Programs like Accelerated Reader absolutely dumbfound me when they're used inappropriately. Tying these tests to grades discourages students. And we're already competing against social media, too.

There's no such test in my country and I very strongly remember the absolute boredom of having to read at my classmates pace. I always read ahead because I wanted to know what's happening and then had to reread the chapters when we finally got to them in class. So, the test doesn't seem to work very well, but no test at all is also not very helpful.

I was that asshat kid that was really proud to be an advanced reader and would just bring Harry Potter to class in first grade and read silently while everyone else read those awesome scholastic chapter books 😂 but they never made me read specific books, I always got to chose what I wanted

I tested at post college reading level back in 4th grade 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was maybe one of three who scored that high and it sucked for me at that time because I got through books so fast. They never bothered to challenge those of us who were so high testing (this was way back in the olden days of the late 80s/early 90s) so I basically read what I had to in school and then devoured everything I could that challenged me outside of school. The things I read at that age would cause heart attacks among new parents of these days 😆.

I had a similar experience reading in elementary! I remember sitting at my desk in 3rd grade, sobbing over Where the Red Fern Grows, and my classmates were like wtf.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones is my favorite one in the Wayward Children Series, but Where the Drowned Girls Go is really good too! I definitely recommend reading them on order because some details get sprinkled here and there. It's really a lovely series so every one of them is a worthy read!

The reading level testing honestly worked to single people out rather than incentivizing continued progress. Ngl I loved the reading competitions of how many books one read in a semester! Couldn’t lie on these book competitions since they were based on book comprehension as well. That was much more helpful in fostering reading habits.

UPDATE: I read One Italian Summer..ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! YOU WERE RIGHT. CRIED MY EYES OUT. SO FAR, IT IS MY NUMBER ONE FAVORITE BOOK FOR 2022. THAT BOOK WAS PERFECTION AND I WANT TO PICK UP MORE REBECCA SERLE BOOKS! Now, I am currently reading Gallant and OMG I CANNOT PUT IT DOWN! I have to be honest though... some scenes have me jumping. It is a little scary. This is the first gothic book I have ever read, and the only reason I thought about a gothic book is because of your enthusiasm about a few in the past. I am about a third of the way through. I am enjoying it so much! Neon Gods was INCREDIBLE! I am about to dive into Electric Idol and I am sooo excited!

Fun haul! The only one I've read is Animal Farm and that was years ago - no, not like Wilbur - haha. I added Thursday Murder Club to my TBR because retirement home armchair sleuths sounds like an amazing time! I just picked up Lessons in Chemistry and Fahrenheit 451... and thanks to B&N's preorder sale, yesterday I preordered quite a haul... Mirror Lake, Velvet was the Night (paperback preorder), The Murder of Mr. Wickham and Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence. I don't know how I will be able to wait for that last one to be released in August... 🫖🍵

🍻I always enjoy you videos! I recall my 3 rd grade teacher not allowing me to check out Little Women from the school library. Luckily I did not let it influence me. That evening asked my mom to take me to the local library, checked out Little Women and then carried it to school everyday making sure the teacher saw the book on my desk and read it every chance I got in front of her.

I read the first volume of Fence and can't wait to read the others. I am also on a journey to read all the middle grade books and series that I didn't read or finish when I was that age, including The Series of Unfortunate Events! If you loke Fence you would probably like "Check! Please" by Ngozi Ukazu. It's another graphic novel surrounding sports. It's so good.!

I just bought Wild At Heart by K.A. Tucker. Its the 2nd in her Wild series that I adore! I love the Thursday Murder Club books. It was one of my favorite books of 2020, the second in the series is great too. If you ever watched PBS Masterpiece Mystery or if you like Only Murders In the Building, it has similar vibes, at least to me 🥰

I remember being tested on my reading level in elementary and even though I read at a higher reading level then my classmates, my teacher didn’t like me and she lied on the paper and forced me to stay after school in the program they had to help slower readers. Because I of that I almost lost my love of reading. I remember tell my dad about it and his best friend was on the school board on the time so they retested me with a different teacher and fired the one that lied about my reading level.

I read Animal Farm around the same time Geico came out with the ‘little piggy crying wee wee wee all the way home.’ Till this day I am still a bit frightened of pigs 🐷. So with Neon Gods and Electric Idol by Katee Robert, it's called the Dark Olympus series. I own the first one and borrowed the 2nd one from the library. So excited to read it. Katee also has a book called The Devil's Daughter. That's next on my tbr cause it's also a library book. The one I'm currently reading is a mystery called Can't Go Back by Debra Webb. I also recently read a thriller called Say Her Name by Dreda Say Mitchell and Ryan Carter.

🧋I read all of the Series of Unfortunate Events books when I was a pre-teen, and I absolutely LOVE those books. They are fast reads. The last one is the longest, but I think you will greatly enjoy them! I just picked up Gallant by V.E. Schwab, and I am looking forward to reading it! I also picked up Neon Gods per your recommendation! Looking forward to reading that soon, as well!

I LOVED The Thursday Murder Club! The main characters were so entertaining, though the plot got a little convoluted toward the end. But the characters definitely make it worth the read! 🍷
