Join me as I take a tour of the Bob's Stores in Manchester, Connecticut and Simsbury, Connecticut before they close forever.
** Update. The news sources I found indicated that the last day open would be July 14, 2024. However, this may be incorrect. **
If you liked this video, please don't forget to give me a thumbs up, leave a comment and subscribe to my channel. I plan to have more dead mall videos in the future. Thanks for watching!

UPDATE: The news sources I read indicated that Bob's Stores was closing for good on 07/14/2024. However, some people are telling me that this is not correct and it may not be closing until August or September 2024. I have not been able to confirm this one way or the other though. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks!

They haven’t announced a closing date. July 14 was the last day for exchanges and for gift cards to be honored. I’m assuming they will announce closing dates when inventory gets low enough. That will also likely be when they start selling off fixtures. Liquidation companies are usually hired to handle these types of closures and they always follow the same pattern. I would think the liquidation companies are required to satisfy the bankruptcy court they are not hiding assets that could be used to pay back creditors.

A Bob's Store moved into the former Christmas Tree Shops at the Holyoke Mall a couple years ago. Sad that it's going to be vacant again. Anchor stores are becoming harder and harder for malls to fill.

Bob's Stores had been in Simsbury for 30 years. Before 1999, the plaza was the Farmington Valley Mall. Stop and Shop, Bradlees, D&L, KayBee Toys, and others were the main stores, along with a host of other small ones. Bradlees and D&L closed at about the same time (1992) and Bob's moved in afterwards, along with a renovated Super Stop and Shop. In 1994-1995, Avon Marketplace opened next door. 1999-2001, the plaza became Simsbury Commons. Bob's remained as an anchor store, along with Borders Bookstores, 3D Bed Bath (later Bed, Bath and Beyond), Stop and Shop, Chili's a renovated Walgreens (which used to be 24 hours until September 2017, it should be again) and others. I wonder if Simsbury Commons is starting to die. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the video! I worked for Bob’s for many years. I worked in the Enfield and Manchester(originally on N. Main St.) stores and the corporate office in Meriden. Bob’s was very popular from the late 70s into the early 90s. The seasonal “flyer” sales were insanely busy. It was a great place to work with great people. Very sad for everyone that lost their jobs. The real decline was when key vendors like Nike started restricting which retailers carried their products and restricting discounting. Grateful for my time there.

I have a weirdly distinct set of memories with Bob's. This was always my mom's favorite place to go for clothes since the coupons they used to give out offered weirdly deep discounts on entire transactions. Most of my school clothes growing up came from this store!

I worked at the Bos's Stores in Enfield,CT in the 80's and early 90's when it was only 6 stores and it was great. We carried regular clothing and footwear in addition to sports wear and it was always busy, especially during our sales. Once the stores were sold to the Melville Corporation, they opened a lot more stores in a short time . I believe this may have been the beginning of their downfall. I hope all of those employees are able to find a job quickly. Good luck to everyone.

I remember when the Bobs Store in Manchester just opened up back when I was 16 or 17. It felt like it had just been opened not too long ago and now they're going out of business. Sucks to see it go so soon.

Bob's was a CT institution and I'm sad to see it go. They never adjusted post-pandemic, and once they merged with Eastern Mountain Sports the prices on everything went up. I remember I would pick-up a hat and a t-shirt for my favorite sports teams each season and it would cost about $40. Post-pandemic it was $80. It's wasn't worth the trip when Amazon still had low prices.

So.....sounds like their 40% off price is just a little below Amazon's....???...they are not then anxious to sell all their stock..perhaps they have another buyer to take it all....or to take a tax break for what is left over.......thanks .......

This is weird because the Manchester Bob's was next to Best Buy I'm the next Plaza. They went out of business then, had a complete sale selling all fixtures and everything. Then I see it open in the mall here at the old Dick's Sporting Goods. Weird it closed so quickly but it is a huge store and the mall isn't busy. I used to go to Bob's as a kid in Manchester when it was in a much smaller store, the shoes were in the basement, when you could get converse for $20 or less a pair.

I had no idea they came back. The last I saw of Bob's Stores was that location at Buckland Hills Dr and Slater St, across Slater from Best Buy and next door in the same plaza as PC Richard, which is where Circuit City was. When did Dick's move down to Tolland Tpke? I'm trying to remember where Dick's was before this, but I do remeber them relocating the store from wherever it was to the Buckland Mall, so they've been in three different locations in Manchester in just the last 20 years. When the Bob's at Buckland Hills and Slater closed several years ago, I thought that was it, the end, no more, buh-bye now, see ya wouldn't wanna be ya, we're out. That sucks that they weren't able to make it work this time around.

Definitely no great loss. Prices at their "Going Out of Business Sale," were grossly inflated. Even with their "deep" discounts, prices were far higher than normal.
@xschx1
@xschx1 Месяц назад
Most of the time a liquidation company takes over and basically owns and controls the merchandise. They usually set all the prices back to normal from any sale prices, so they are all the inflated ticket prices, and then just do weekly percentage off hikes. Like how Sears always played the game where clothes were on sale 1/2 price from day one to make it seem like you were getting a deal, they just inflated the price tags. JC penny played the same game, and look what happened to all of them. When the other Bob's Manchester location closed, the last day everything was 90-95% off and they still had jeans left which was a steal at a few dollars each for Levi's. I grabbed some and then some guy came in with a cart and grabbed the entire rack and the store was officially sold out

Bobs lost its way over the years. They were originally a discount/close out store offering really low prices. They gradually became a lot like EbLens aside from the more elaborate store decor at EbLens. It’s not a surprise that both EbLens and Bob’s are going out of business.

An interesting layout to that particular store with the vacant, unchanged lower level. Sad this store didn't even make it to two years. For most of my middle and high school years, Bob's was the store I'd mainly go to for back-to-school shopping. I stopped at the Hamden location last week. The vibe there was sad. Picked up a couple things for old time's sake.

I never even tried shopping in Bob's. As a woman who wears size 12N sneaks, plus size bottoms and tall-sized shirts, there was never any point. Mens' shoes, if you're wondering, start at falling-off wide. The jacked up base prices are expected, and they probably brought in merch that was never in the store to begin with. Sears did that in West Hartford. Those stores look like they'll be open for a while yet. I don't see any liquidator merch in the store yet.

All the Bob's Stores closed rather suddenly. I thought that was very weird. The source of their funding must have went belly up quick. The closest Bob's Store near me was in Franklin, MA. I never shopped at one. The chain seems to have a history of questionable capital management. The high interest rates must have been the final straw. Not many regional retail chains left. I used to work at The Fair many year ago.

I hate people have to lose jobs and another place goes out of business. Yet every time you go to one of these stores they either have low stock or nothing in your size. I can't feel bad for the companies, you put these places in hot water with understocked stories with bare bones crews. I can order online and have all sizes and get them in a few days while not leaving my house. It's turning into an easy choice, why waste the gas and time when you leave with nothing 80% of the time.
