Another Plasma Donut Circuit

Just trying to make the donut on another HF oscillator circuit of mine since I didn't have any more knob capacitors like I thought. It had a much smaller diameter primary and was still even able to make the donut, but it was only a small one that hugged the windings. The fields were too small and concentrated. After making the coil wider it still made the donut but it was also a little too hot to run for long periods since I don't want to damage the glass. I can probably just try to tune the thing to run at less current but before that I might as well also play around with modulating it also.
While I don't want to make it seem easier than it actually is, I will say that I was able to get this one going without a lot of effort just like the first one.. but it did take a little more tweaking. It was difficult to maintain a donut on this one when increasing the primary inductance too much and leaving all other values the same. It likes about ~18mhz with a 100pf tank cap.
I've also got this copper strip on the gate running over with a 90 in it to the cap that also could be making a difference. I think at the time I first made it I was playing around with trying to shift the phase relation of the gate and drain voltages. I'm also using 1/8" copper tube for the other circuit and just solid 12awg on this one.

Yeah so if the plasma is heating up too much and sticks to the bottom of the globe, you think the solution would be increasing the coil diameter and/or turn spacing? I have the sticky plasma issue too in my current setup and wasnt sure how to get the ring to lift off again. Normally I would just turn the bias down but the ring extinguishes before it separates from the bottom of the globe...

What I've found works best for my setup is having the lowest possible inductance where the circuit will still oscillate and then giving the globe about a 1 cm distance from the coil. In my setup this makes the plasma toroid float in the center of the globe and it's really stable too.

Good question. Of course all depending.. but I'd guess the oscillation feedback is not quite strong enough to get the toroid going if you were to widen the primary more, worth a try though. Increasing the frequency may help. In my case I'm trying to manage retuning it so it will still give the donut but not pull quite as much current. On the next one of these I make I'd be looking for decent variability in the gate bias.

So from what I can gather it does seem to depend on the phase relation of your switching, but it looks to me like a lot of these will want to hug the coils due to the field interaction at the higher currents. Around 50W for example. Closer to 30W and below it seems like it's easier to get the floating toroid. Of course I'd imagine then it would require decent switching. Brute forcing the hard switching at higher currents is basically what I'm dealing with on my second one right now.
