Grey knights also have the problem of low strength low damage and they dropped a ton of points taking away some of the elite-ness about them. BUT this data slate they gave them some boosts on their baby boy baby carrier robot weapons. So hopefully they are just dipping their toes in to actually changing model stats and rules and they will be more emboldened as the edition goes on.

About buying/not buying codices: Obviously I can only speak for myself. Everyone can do with their money as they please. But I, personally, haven't bought a physical GW codex since 7th edition 40K. With 8th edition came stuff like Vigilus and all the campaign books. You suddenly needed like 3+ books of rules for one army. And out of each of those books you only used a handfull of pages. It's not just too expensive but the kicker for me was that the books were invalidated so quickly. Sometimes we had erratas on release day! Íf I spend 30-40€ on a single book I expect: -Very high quality (Proofreading, professional artworks, crisp layout and so on) -that I can use the damn thing for more than two weeks. With The Old World returning I dusted off my old Vampire Counts army book. It has SUBSTANTIALLY more artworks in there which I find really nice. Surely there are some reused artworks from previous books but the sheer volume is something to note. It genuially feels like more than "here are you rules, oh and we threw some lore in there". I have no idea on the profit margin of codices. GW has to pay the authors, artists, pay for printing, binding, proofreading (haha), logistics, storage and so on. If instead they would upgrade to the 21st century and make "lite" versions for 10€ that are online/pdf rules-only and that are updated with every FAQ/errata/points-update they could cut a lot of costs and parallel they could continue to offer traditional physical 40€ codices for people that like physical books or that want the added lore, artworks and so on. But right now a codex feels like it has less shelf-life than a banana whilst not offering a whole lot.

I think physical codexes should be sold AFTER the edition ends, for the people that wanna continue playing the game and keep it for themselves. The rule book is fine if doesn't have major changes (like 10th had) but the faction rules should be afterwards. Also, space marines should be just one big book.If it was at the end of every edition, there would be a compilation of books, people wouldn't be complaining they don't have one yet and it would be with the best possible balancing ever. Yes, it would probably take some time to print those books, maybe one year, but see it this way. 40K is only really a game when the editions come to an end. For 3 years, there are balancing issues, points going up and down, nerfs and bufs, rules changing, and for some reason we think that's ok. That's what people call alpha's and beta's in videogame language. If only now the 9th edition was declared finished and ready for competitive play, GW would make even more sells on codexes (with people actually wanting to spend money on finished books that wont change) and they would sell more models (because there would be people wanting units for both editions).

I think the rules should be free digitally (pdf) or one-time purchasable on app with future updates. If you decide to buy the codex/rulebook, you get app access for free for that rulebook/codex with a code or something.

Here's the thing - I like how the digital rules work. I like that you can click a rule or a profile and go straight to what it does. I also love how easy it is to build armies, and to issue points and rules updates. _HOWEVER,_ physical books are much easier to read and even easier to index. The problem that GW codices have had is their composition. They've been reluctant _for years_ to put the points next to the rules for things, or put the page numbers with the relevant related text. Oh, a character can take certain bodyguard types? How about putting the page numbers next to them so that I can find them? But there's a much better solution. The data cards. They're excellent, easy to update, easy to reference, easy to read, and you can have several out at once. If I were to rework how the physical codex looks, I would make it like a photo album with sleeves for the data cards and rules. The lore and art could still be in there as printed pages, and you can still buy the cards separately like you can now, but you have plastic pockets for the cards to sit in. Then, when a rules update comes along, you can just exchange the affected cards without having to throw away a whole bloody book. You could even have space in the back to build "army lists" for your detachments, keeping just the relevant unit cards together for easy access (or just pull them out and leave them out on the desk. They're _your cards_ and you _own_ them.).

Perhaps the Codexes are for people like me, who don't own 5 editions of codexes already. Who doesn't have a huge library or lore and fluff and who just wants to get to know their faction better. And perhaps for people who doesn't care about competative play and just want a handy way of getting all the most important stuff in one little package. Perhaps they are for the people who like to have something physical to flip through? I'm sure there are a lot of people who, like me, just recently started playing 40k. Those codexes are really nice. I got the admech codex and it contains a LOT of cool stuff. And I really don't care if a thing is supposed to cost 5 points more or if its supposed to move 1" less. I'm never going to play strangers at an event. I'll play my friends. Perhaps the books are for people like me? Having said all that: They should def. make all of these faction rules available as a "living book" digitally for the people who wan't to have all the content always up to date (if they are not already doing that). But isn't that what the little code-thing at the back of the book is? A digital, always up to date, version of the book?

Honestly, I would be MORE likely to buy the codexes if the rules were free and the codex was just for convenience. Make the 40k codex like the AoS spiral bound ones so they can sit flush, with the data cards in them. Add letter tabs on the side for quick reference. I would pay $40 for that in a heartbeat if I wasn't being bullied into it.

Points cost reductions are great... For GW. Now you need an extra box to complete your army.

GW needs to go all digital for their up-to-date rules. They will have success selling their temporal rules in paperback as collector items. Fudge physical essential cards, fugde physical essential rulebooks.

Im pretty sure if GW released rules online free, but still offer the option for physical books, they wouldnt see that much of a dip in sales, lets be honest those of us who wont pay for the codex can wait for battle scribe or othe sources to update, and those who would still want the physical copy will still get it

when i first got into warhammer i bought the custodes codex and within a month it would out of date due to balance stuff. decided i would never buy another codex again after that. i would use the GW app but im not going to buy the book to read it online when other sources exist and are formatted better

Codex are useless now, literally redundant by the time you get them and not loaded with Lore and fun art like they used to. Theyre getting smaller and smaller with less and less useful information
