Another Sixty Feet Of Rail Track! And A Channel Update...

You've see me building track for the field railway before, so I hope this isn't boring. I think it's really exciting - because now I have two tracks that run up into the drying tunnel - so there's room for twice as many wagons.
Eagle-eyed watchers will see me cutting all those extra long sleepers I laboriously laid a while back. They would have worked as they were if I'd started laying the rails from the tunnel end first - but this way, the holes wouldn't match up, so either I cut the rails (no fun with a hacksaw) or get the chainsaw going..

"I'm not an engineer"... I wish I was an engineer as innovative as you are. Sincere condolences for the loss of your son - unimaginable heartache. I keep hoping that one day I will have the time and space to build a railway- having one which is actually useful would be a bonus. Thanks for sharing your dream. Take care x

Just a few thoughts. First i am a fairly new subscriber to this channel (and the associated one) and I did not realize you have had such a personal tragedy, Christmas can be a very sad time for some so we are all thinking off you and Sandra. On a brighter note, perhaps you could call it a tramway or plateway to distinguish it from passenger carrying ones. As for the loco type (as you did ask) a battery electric would work best, if you could find an old milk float or golf buggy. In the interim could you persuade the four legged animal that wanders about, to pull wagons, it would be a proper plateway then. Look after yourself and we will enjoy what you post and when you post it.

I just discovered this channel today, but I loved it immediately. I think it‘s somehow every boy‘s dream to build his own railroad in his garden. And in your case, it‘s not even for fun, but with a business idea in mind! I think it‘s turning out great. Condolences for the loss of your son. Anybody else would have fallen into a depression, but the way you carry on with new projects is even more inspiring! Stay save, get well - and I‘m looking forward to watch your project evolve further!

I am building a monorail like the one you showed in a video. I am using american T-post because I have it for now and will build the cart with metal pulley wheels. Hope it works out. With metal prices so high right now its hard to invest in metal. Thank you for the videos!
@kameljoe21
@kameljoe21 2 года назад
That is interesting for the tposts. What lengths and how are you making the connections?
@amberyooper
@amberyooper 2 года назад
I built my 7-1/2 inch garden railroad using T-posts. They are "interesting" to bend for curves, and the "rail" head is a bit narrow, but they work well enough for the purpose. I have a couple of short videos on a play list on my channel that show the railroad, in case you're interested. I was getting ready to start on a monorail project using T-posts and pulley wheels like what you're talking about, but the winter weather set in before I got started, so that will have to wait until spring.
@amberyooper
@amberyooper 2 года назад
@@kameljoe21 I use 3/4 inch plated bent angle iron that I get from the local hardware store for rail connectors. You can use whatever length of T-posts that you want to, it's just that shorter ones require more rail connectors to go a certain distance. You should be aware that T-posts are made from fairly hard steel, and regular drill bits don't hold up well when drilling the holes for the track connectors. I used cobalt drill bits and cutting oil to drill the holes in my T-post rails.
@kameljoe21
@kameljoe21 2 года назад
@@amberyooper I am well aware of t post and their strengths and flaws. I have pulled and installed over 25,000 of them in my life. That is cool I will check out those videos now.

THEN it Might get built..........

On the topic of engines might I recommend going with some sort of diesel hydraulic or at least a hydraulic setup you could even make all sorts of tools that you put on cars like diggers or something and run it off of hydraulic outputs on the engine it would be a easy way to have some heavier duty stuff out there since you can't drive a tractor out. TBH, this is FAR more interesting than 'model railways' simply because of what is and what it's for. You are basically making a 1700s railway - for a real purpose - and you have a modern replica of a donkey just like they'd have back then when the 'rails' were mere ruts in mine tunnels ! Makita weren't around back then.

Hello 👋🏼 RU-vid chucked your new channel in to my suggestion feed some weeks back so i started watching, i’m caught up on all what i find interesting, mostly the railway stuff & machinery content. I myself am heavily involved in running & maintaining a public 5 inch gauge that runs in a public park called the Goffs Park Light Railway. We are currently closed for winter so the maintenance side of things is currently busy. Today i was involved with steam locomotive repairs, two different locos with what ended up being almost identical problems that were completely unconnected.

A proper working railway is more of a railway then any model I own ever will be. As s certified shade tree engineer myself I enjoy watching you attack problems and come up with elegant cost effective solutions, that's the essence of engineering and while you may not be formally certified you are most certainly an engineer. I'll admit when I first came across your railway series I initially scoffed at using flat bar rail instead of "real" rail, but I soon realized the genius of it and even though I am a young man now, I intend on borrowing your designs and having a railway of my own one day, and I don't think I ever would have come up with using the rail system you have, but its genius. Looking forward too more projects from the workshop!
