In this video, I do an overview of Ansco's 'Shur Shot' 120 box camera (model 20, circa 1948), and share some things I learned about the camera while shooting that might be helpful. It's a really fun medium format film camera to use, and these were crazy popular back in the day.
Check with your Grandma, she probably has one in the attic waiting for you!

Hi there. I'm Chris. Film is more fun is a place where I share about whatever busted up old camera I'm currently shooting and tinkering with, or my meanderings in film photography. It would be pretty rad if you said what's up. I'm 99% friendly. Definitely do that. Disclaimer: If you want technical proficiency go watch 'The Art of Photography' (love that show). These videos are more like an elderly person navigating a tv clicker.

I was just given one of these. The person who owned it passed away and he was 84, so I had a feeling it is an older camera. I don’t know if it works yet, but I am glad I found your video.

Per your curiosity about the film and the little red window- The instructions on the inside of the back panel say that the "camera works best with Ansco 120 size film". Hope that helps!

Laura McDaniel Thanks Laura. Yeah, I've thought how it would be nice to have had an industry standard back then. Who knows, maybe the thinking was if they inconvenienced you enough when using Kodak, etc that maybe you were more likely to but their film haha. But there's always a work around 😁
@stinkybritches4540
@stinkybritches4540 5 лет назад
filmismorefun Kodak was king of inconvenience, so much so, they went out of their way to make 620 film. The 620 film dimensions are exactly the same as 120, only the spool is slimmer. They did this to prevent other brand films from being used in their cameras.

Old Kodak backing paper had three numbers in a column for each format, as did (presumably) Ansco. So the placement of the red window wouldn't have been a problem. Modern backing paper isn't so generous with ink I guess.

Hey Chris, I'm taking my b2 Cadet on vacation. Also getting another box tengor... But with the meter markings instead of feet. Boxes are stupid fun. Also, they used b2 film. B2 was the German version of 120. Agfa, the parent of ansco in the 30s, would put a b2 sticker inside before ansco was torn away from agfa due to WW2.

Thanks for the info Jason! I hope your vacation is mostly outdoors haha. I'm still enjoying that Tengor, it's such a great camera. Glad to hear you're picking another up.

Hi Chris! Very cool 120 camera! Yeah, the red window should be on the other side where the 6x9 numbering is actually located. But your workaround is great. The pics are nice and sharp! We’re those taken with the filter? Great video. Anthony.
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 3 года назад
Thanks! I do use a Hoya 25a Red or some ND filters on occasion. This is fairly sharp in the center, but on the outside of the frame not so much. But I don't mind to be honest, gives the photos a certain charm in my opinion 🙂

Far better than the overexposed Holga. Brownies does seem to be better build though. Sliding aperture, real mirrors, standard red window etc.

I have an Eastman-Kodak Brownie SIX-20 that looks a lot like that. It’s obvious the two companies (Kodak and Ansco) must’ve merged. I’m looking to sell it by the way.

@filmismorefun 5 лет назад
Hi Marshall. I have a 620 brownie as well. I don't know of Ansco and Kodak merging, but the designs are definitely similar. 🙂
@robertknight4672
@robertknight4672 3 года назад
That was just the standard form factor of these box cameras. at the time. If you have SLR 35 mm cameras from the 70s and early 80s many of them have the same aesthetic regardless of what brand they are. Kodak came out with the six-20 format so if you bought their cameras you were to have to buy their film.

is this missing a glass lens in front aperture where it lets the light in? mine also does not have it. Not sure if missing or by design?

I have one to several years older than the one he is showing a good chunk of the time the glass lens was behind the shutter on mine it looks like something is missing to but it’s complete

I loaded mine with Shanghai 120 pan film can see frame numbers just fine. Is there supposed to be a front lens glass? Just curious. Picked mine up at a yard sale for $2
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 5 лет назад
Man! $2 is a steal. Nope, there isn't any glass in front. Some Brownies have a lens for close focus from 5-10', but this model Ansco has a minimum focus distance of 10' I believe. Thanks for the heads up about the frame numbers. Was wondering if anything would line up.

Do you know how to get rid of rust and make the knob at the top turn easier. I don’t want the pieces to break off. And the knob is really tight and snaps when I turn it and pull it out to load the film. Any suggestions?

You might try scrubbing the knob with an abrasive pad, then wiping it down with oil.

What meter conditions would you look for to determine how many stops to add with filters?
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 3 года назад
Hi there. I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you asking how many stops to add if you use filters, or are you asking if there it's a specific meter reading that requires filters?

Card board for me lasts about 10 seconds no matter what I do, you must really keep care of these! Where did you get that one, and are they cheap? I want to do a ww2 cosplay with my friends, not sure what camera to get but I want something of the Era

@@filmismorefun good recommendations, but eBay seems sketchy. Before I actually buy something, was wondering if there are any specific criteria a camera should meet first? Like film or framing or something? I'm new to this, thanks for your help so far

Are you sure about the effective aperture being f13? I've read or been told it's f11, f13, and f16, however no one seems to actually know.... As far as the min. focus distance, according to my dad, who used one of these a lot back in the late 40's - 1950's, it's closer to ~12 feet, give or take, to get a center of the shot "decent" for focus... any closer and everything starts to blur....
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 2 года назад
Hi there. Well, there are several models of ShurShot, so there's may be others that have a different apertures. As fas as how certain I am it's at f13- have I measured the physical diameter of the hole? No. But I've always calculated my exposure at f13 and it's been fine. If you want to give an extra two feet on your minimum focus distance per your Dad's suggestion, That doesn't seem like a bad idea. I hope that helps!
@looneyburgmusic
@looneyburgmusic 2 года назад
@@filmismorefun if you've gotten good results figuring for f13 that's good enough for me :-) Wondering about exposure has been the main thing holding me back from taking my little Box out to play...
