This is exactly how i felt and i must have cried at the beginning of 3 songs from the emotion of seeing it done so lovely again.

This wasn't mean to be like the original, it's meant to capture the source material in a way Spielberg view it. So it's not a remake, it's readapting the show

The division and hatred was addressed throughout the film, especially in the end. When Maria takes the gun and says that she can kill them all now that she has hate, she's calling them all out for taking away everything she loved with their hateful ways. It's subtle, but you can tell that both sides get it after it's too late. That's why both gangs comfort her and help carry Tony away. And although her ending is tragic, I still think it's better than Romeo and Juliet

@@qtasabutton21 yes, but that's not what this story is about. It's about hate and what a world full of it can do to someone with hope. This story was never meant to have a happy ending, that's not what it's about. If she and Tony ended up happy the entire meaning and message of the story would be completely different. It's still great representation to me, because a lot of immigrants do come to America with hopeful hearts and end up broken. But I completely agree with you that Hollywood movies lack Latino representation. And if a Latina is in a film she almost never has a happy ending or much development. I would love to see more of that in films, but I don't think it would have worked in this movie

@@143yese I get that's what this story is about, my point here is that we need to keep putting pressure on this narrative of tragic not worthwhile love that will get you killed. With the Latin girl always comparing herself (the scene of "I feel Pretty") to the ideal idea of white woman beauty. The more we buy into this narrative of a tragic, hate filled, not a happy ending type of films for Latinos this will continue to be the representation we will continue to get. It is not okay. To be okay with it. Rather instilling confidence in our girls in our community is so very important. It's not okay IMO of this film for her to disregard this white boy killing her brother and then the scene still comes up that she decides to still love him and even sleep with him all because she "loves" him. Do you not clearly see the white superior complex message sent here? It's saying it's okay for latin girls to not have value just because they love. It's interesting and important to pay attention to films in the far more subtle messages they send that catch the attention of all angles for the audience. I also dislike that Steven Spielberg is given so much praise, he continues to be a white man in the film industry. Why are we not pushing more Latin directors to direct a happy ending film for Latino girls to see? We need to push for positive, accurate, loving, inclusive representation too. Not just tragic Romeo Juliet, guns, violence, narrative. Latin communities have so much more to offer than that. And it starts with changing THAT narrative about us in the films we watch, the music we listen to as well.
