Shifu Anael-Bey, How does the hip relate to you generating power in your arms? I saw a video of you breaking a coconut with relaxedness in your arms but wondering about your hip movement in coordination with it. Thank you Steve
Thank you so much for your question. We train whole body power, so the hip plays a crucial role. However. We also train segmented power as well, such as power from each joint as if each joint was the “root.” Imagine the early days of UFC where BJJ terrorized everyone. The shoot took everyone’s power base (legs). Now imagine freezing the moment your legs are snatched by the BJJ player and someone handed you a hammer. So you also want the ability to emit stopping power absent the use of your stance/base and/or hips. Hope that answers your question.
@@SharifBey Thank you Shifu. It took me a few minutes to think over it and it makes sense how you are explaining the whole body power. I study Okinawan Ti and the closest thing we have is called Atifa, a kind of whipping energy generated by a pulling motion. One simple example is whipping a towel, the pull back generates a whipping motion at the end very similar to a whip. So you have to be very relaxed to do it. My Uncle was trying to simulate the relaxedness by walking around his house and acting like he was going to sneeze to get the same kind of whipping motion out of his hands to coordinate his whole body movement. One of our senior students showed me your video clip and he said it was a good example of it. Our instructor said if done properly with something like a water melon you should be able to hit the outside skin and the inside of it will shredded up and the outside is undamaged. Sounds like magic but basically your creating a pressure wave so that makes sense but not easy. Good to see other skilled martial artists out there. Keep up the good work.
