@@daveb5892 Forrest Gump said “Life’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” I tend to think of it as a poker game with each hand dealt revealing new things. I’m not paralyzed, so I’m not wanting to seem flippant. I have been dealt great and awful hands, like anyone. I prefer to engage with anyone (online making it easier for everyone, perhaps a blessing and a curse) because I value every individual. Each person has unique assets and liabilities. Experiences further individuality. Some are more common, some less.
As a 73 year old polio survivor who had to learn to walk three times, I can tell you have the right attitude. I’ll pray for your best outcome but, I know you will make the best of whatever that might be. Don’t be too hard on those people who keep asking the same question, they just don’t realize how many times you’re asked. Have a Very Merry Christmas, Love Ron
Congratulations to you and your strength!! I also agree her attitude is whats going to make her journey/rehab soo much more healthier...I believe God has plans for her and that the her storm will not last for life..I believe miraculously God is going to fully heal her
@@MatthewC33199 I think what they mean is republicans don't fund stem cell research is because it will limit the funding to the pharmaceutical companies. What she needs is stem cell development. Not pills, or capsules. That's why that statement was made.
@@renatojohnsonjr.5403 I think the reason Republicans don’t fund stem cell research is because of its connection to abortions, but I still don’t see what this has to do with the video. Yeah, stem cell research might benefit her, but it’s a bit of a non sequitur to bring politics into it.
She is wise beyond her years.I have a feeling she will be someone who surprises her family, her therapists, and her doctors with her recovery.I really think she is going to do something special in this life to make a difference in the world.
I was in an accident when I was 16, left me paralyzed, know I am 32 married for 10 years and have 2 beautiful daughters one is 10 and my baby is 4, keep that beautiful smile and amazing attitude, will be praying for you. 💜
Hi, Makayla Oct 2021 was my 40th year of living as a C5-6 quadriplegic. You have started on a new journey with many twists and turns; keep a positive attitude! Much will change; you will continue to grow more independent. You will look back in five years; much of what you are doing now will look much different. You probably will no longer need compression socks or a belly band to maintain your blood pressure. You will not need as much assistance from others. I encourage you to pursue learning to drive one of the best things I have ever done. Just a little about me I am married, have two children, I work, and drive by myself most times. I wish you the very best. David
Wow.. I fail (sometimes) to remember how resilient the human body and mind can be.. I really hate to say, how inspirational this is .. because being human and overcoming is your human experience... But . You are amazing
I like how you say things will “look a little different” rather than just saying you won’t be able to do certain things anymore. You’re so amazing girl!
When I was her age I had a very clear view of what my future looked like. And now I'm 40 and my life looks NOTHING like that view, and I'm extremely happy. Life rarely turns out how you picture it when you are young, and that is almost never a bad thing. Not saying anyone has to be happy that they got a spinal injury, just saying that life can be pretty dang awesome even when it looks nothing like you pictured.
I cannot believe her attitude. My goodness, she is unbelievably positive. What an Angel!! I feel blessed to have come across her page. She is amazing. ❣
This is to your parents. When I was a kid, I got really sick with meningitis and encephalitis. I lost the ability to walk and talk. I recovered very slowly. This was majorly difficult for my parents. Take time for self care, parents. You have raised a resilient young woman has a great mindset. Parents are so important and your self care is going to help out your daughter’s recovery. Prayers!!
From someone whom also needs significant help by my carers, I second your suggestion to her parents & loved ones! It's a long haul and we count on you taking good care of yourself in all ways, it's not selfish of you and honestly sometimes we need the reminder to look outside ourselves in our struggle, but it's not because we don't care!!!! 🙏❤️🌈💞
My Dad broke his neck and back a few days before your accident. You were two doors from him in ICU. We’ve kept you and your family in our prayers and will continue to do so. You had a lot of love and support in that waiting room downstairs! ❤️
I know you mean well but this is a public plattform, and safety first online is to not give out private details. There are sadly too many awful people online treating info like this about others in a bad way. You might want to remove your comment out of respect for her privacy and also your own, Diana!💛
If you’re still passionate about cheering, you could look into coaching for cheer clubs. My club volleyball coach broke his c6 playing football when he was 17 in 2007. Now his father, brother, and himself are the best volleyball coaches in south Mississippi. He was the reason our team had no excuses for failure, he has taught so many young girls that no matter what you can still get out there and do what you want.
I was paralyzed by a drunk driver October 2 of 94 when I was 15 a month shy of my 16th...I'm a T4-7 , nipple level down also. It takes time love, but you find you'll come out way stronger in the end. You're a freaking rock star! 💞😸💐🌟
My Faith, Family, and Friends helped me get through my accident in 1989. I'm also a c6/c7 quad. When I was newly injured, my mom and dad would always tell people "He's the same guy he's always been, just talk to him". My personality has not changed and it has totally helped me get on with my life and love the things I do and have done. ATTITUDE is everything. Stay positive and don't be afraid to try new things. God Bless.
I cant believe how positive she is about the traumatic accident. It doesn't look/feel like she's faking for the camera either. God bless this girl and her family
@@zeusmasterson4117 I understand your reply. I am on a similar journey myself, and was very driven and hopeful in hospital, also then during 2 in patient rehabs and months at home with all the support. Then COVID hit. Everything (!) has been an uphill battle ever since, and I think it popped my denial bubble much sooner than it might have before. The natural denial is a good thing in a way, lots of momentum you need to get out of the foxhole. But the often slow, creeping nature of any spinal recovery gives one plenty of time for the 5 stages of grief. The important thing is she has her brain intact, and has physical youth and a youthful attitude on her side, as well as obviously devoted loved ones. They'll be bumps ahead but she isn't alone. 🙏❤️🌈
@@zeusmasterson4117 I have heard way too many stories to think this is just it for this sweet girl. ♡ Just so you know... she probably reads these comments. Make sure what you put jn a comment is actually what you would say to her face... you sounded pretty rude.
You remind me a lot of a friend of mine who is also a C6 fracture. She is in her mid-50s now and was paralyzed at 16 from a diving accident. She has held on a job her whole life, married, had children, was a travel agent so she travelled. Her positive attitude also was amazing just like you are. You will do well in life.
My daughter has been in a wheelchair her whole life, shes 21 now, ....and yes traveling is harder....but she/we has been to all kinds of places around the world. A travel vlog to help others with physical impairments and wheelchairs navigate is something my husband and I always say there is a definite call for. Go do it girl.... and let us know where to sign up!!!
The fact the doctors say they don't know if you will walk again is huge. The fact they are leaving that window open. Most of the time it's a sad no. Keep pushing. You haven't peaked yet.
My dad is a pilot for United and my mom used to be a flight attendant and they both know your dad. They told me about the accident when it happened and my heart broke for you. You are such a strong and beautiful girl and seeing you handle all of this with a smile on your face is incredibly beautiful. You have so many amazing things ahead of you💖💖💖
When I was 18 I was shot and paralyzed from the belly button down. I was an absolute mess. I was bitter and angry and cried every day. I ended up walking again although it’s not normal and I’m in a lot of pain and various other spinal cord injury things, anyway I don’t know how this girl has such a good attitude. It is amazing. I am still a nightmare sometimes and it’s been 25 years!! You are amazing Mak. I’m amazed.
I’m so sorry for what happened to you and you have every right to feel the way you did/do. I see Christ in this girl and know only through the power of Jesus can joy and happiness shine through.
You got this! My mother was also paralyzed from the neck down. Many Drs told her she would never walk again and she told them "yes I will"! She did almost 2 yrs of inpatient physical therapy in the hospital and she walked out of the building! You got a great attitude towards your recovery, I have no doubt you will put in the hard work and regain much more!
I also had to teach myself how to walk again after an accident. I had to do all of my own PT cause the hospital treated me like crap and wouldn't help me at all.... because I was not one of the beautiful people that had insurance.
@@karyndewit193 It’s not unusual. If a person’s spinal cord is severed, there is no chance of recovering function. However, if the spinal cord is injured in a less serious way, it can swell or just be damaged. People who have this type of injury have a good chance of recovery. In the video, she describes how she regained partial use of her hands. It’s the same basic idea with legs.
I’m so happy to hear that! Do you remember a contestant on Dancing with the Stars who had been a quadriplegic? Like your mom, it took YEARS of work to recover, and doctors told her “if you have not recovered function by now, you won’t.” She refuses to believe them and continued an unbelievable PT regimen for a long time (I want to say 2 years) after they told her it was hopeless. One day she felt a muscle twitch in her leg. Fast forward to winning medals for swimming in the Paralympics, then total recovery. Now, you would never know it happened by looking at her. Your mom must have superhero strength!
It's so amazing that you survived not just the accident but the pnemonia and the lung collapses. I married my high school sweetheart, we started dating when I was 14 and he was my world. When I was 28, he sustained a injury and needed surgery for a infection from it. He got a hospital related infection, his lungs collapsed, he was on a ventilator for 11 days, they had tubes draining his lungs and despite being young and fit, he didnt survive. I miss him so much. I'm so happy for you, you have overcome so much
Hey! I’m a 22 year old college student getting ready to go out into the work force, and it can be scary. It’s a big transition to go from a life of academia to the real world. Seeing you and your videos made all my anxiety dissipate: what you are experiencing is so much more complex and difficult than what I am, and your positivity is contagious. When the world is so dark, seeing such a ray of light is so refreshing. You’re an inspiration to me. Sending love!
At only 17, you are handling all of this in such an incredible mature way...so much more than I could at 42. You don't seem to bear anger about your situation in anyway and I know if I was in your place, I wouldn't feel the same. I really need to work on some things. I pray God blesses you and your family with incredible miracles and opportunities.
An excellent book to read is “You Are the Placebo” by Joe Dispenza. He had a catastrophic back injury (hit by a truck while on a bicycle) and essentially ignored doctors and created his own healing path. He talks about how our own thoughts and mindset are so important as far as healing. Edit: I am not saying at all to ignore your doctors LOL I am just saying read the book. I found it inspiring in dealing with my own difficulties which are nothing near what you or Dr Dispenza experienced.
I was 18 when a diving accident left me a C5/6 quadriplegic and I knew right away that I was paralyzed but I was also face down in the water and I ended up drowning and needing CPR. It's been 33 years and life is tough but you learn to cope. Good Luck and stay really strong !
The accomplishments you have made are Huge! I can relate 100% as I broke my neck Nov. 2018. I was paralyzed and they didn't know the prognosis as everyone is different. After 2 most at Craig Hospital and 6 most. At QLI in Nebraska I was able to walk. It's not the same as before but I am grateful everyday. You will get stronger and be able to do tons more as time passes no matter if it's in a wheelchair or not. I will keep you in my prayers for continued progress and love.
I would disagree with comments saying you are inspiring because you are strong and brave. Because I think the most inspiring thing about you is your positivity. Not a lot of people can relate to your story because its yours and everyone's different, so even if it makes me think i can be more self-confident in my insecurities seeing how you are still happy in that difficult time, I think the best part of you is how (even if you may have very hard and sad days) you share how staying positive, smiling is always the first step in every cure to get better, physically or mentally. Thank you
My 12 year old daughter has been in competition cheerleading for 5 years now. People don’t realize that it’s a very extreme sport. Sadly, most states don’t recognize it as a sport either. In 2020, right before we went into Covid lockdown, she landed a stunt wrong during practice (she’s a flyer) and broke her C2 vertebrae! I can’t even tell you the fear and panic a mother goes through when your child is injured in such a way. I was so scared she would end up paralyzed. Count my blessings everyday that wasn’t the end result. They call it a “hangman’s fracture” on the two places she broke her neck. So thankful for the team at Mass General in Boston. They have some of the best specialists in the field. My daughter is finally fully healed now, but it was a long road filled of appointments, pain, neck braces, etc. The only good thing was that it happened right as we were stuck inside for the full year in lockdown. So she got to heal. She wants to go back to cheer, as she’s been dedicated for 5 years now, but that one time was enough of a scare for me that I can’t allow it. I have no doubt that you will be back fully walking again as well! 💗
Don't "should" on yourself, sweetheart. You're right, it's a whole new body and you are working SO hard and accomplishing SO much. Please treat yourself like you'd treat a friend, be patient and loving to yourself. You deserve all good things.
As a disabled person I can't imagine how difficult it would be to become paralyzed in a freak accident especially being athlete life is very fragile you can do more than you think driving getting married going to college is all possible many paralyzed people have careers just remember your beautiful and can do anything you put your mind to you just have to do it differently than others you can still enjoy life with a little help from family and friends!💓
I've worked with alot of spinal injuries as a nurse and you have one of the BEST attitudes/perspectives I've ever seen in all my time nursing! Seriously so impressive considering how young you are especially and how difficult it must be to go from being so active/athletic to suddenly not being able to. It's very inspiring! You are such a beautiful person in every way! I hope you continue to recover and get stronger, but I have no doubts you will make the most of life and do great things. Also your family seems AMAZING I know you already know this, but yall are SO lucky to have each other. I wish everyone had that kind of love and support. It really makes all the difference.
@Carmine 2390 say that in the Comment section so everyone can report you. You're a coward, tho, so you say your evil comment buried as a reply. God will determine what you deserve in the hereafter, but on this Earth, you will be shamed, & should be ashamed!
My daughter had her spine injury in 2015 she is now 17 and still recovering..she is driving now and has become an amazing artist with limited use of her hands, God is with her through this whole life changing experience sometimes it takes awhile to see his plans!! Stay strong and stay active
I was recently in an accident and needed a total hip replacement quite young (32). I struggled with this for quite a while as the surgery was done abroad (accident happened in Africa). When I got home the surgeon here said that he would not have given me a total hip replacement and would have tried screws first. I went through a lot emotional turmoil with this and obsessive thoughts due to my OCD. I felt robbed of my hip and doomed to definite future surgeries. But your video popped up on my feed and it has really helped to give me perspective and encourage acceptance of my current situation. Although my issue was traumatic for me, I need to put it into perspective. At least I'm alive and breathing, like you. Your attitude is so inspirational, I am going to take a leaf out of your book. Thank you for spreading your positivity, it's infectious and has helped countless people to see the positive in their own situations, just like you have. xx
They say that some people make the world shine a bite brighter just by being in it, and you my dear certainly are one of those people. Thank you for giving me hope and teaching me so much about life and strength. Bless you and your family in all that you do.
I suffered a penetrating brain injury.. My parents were told it was very unlikely I would survive the 1st 24 hours then they were told if I did survive I would have severe cognitive issues then they were told I would never walk or feed myself or be independent in any way again...I walk (with a limp & cane), have zero cognitive problems & am 100% independent.. I am not going to lie & tell you it's easy my left arm left leg from the knee down are paralyzed..I have a lot of pain and a couple other health problems..its been 6 years I'm still in physical & occupational therapy & go to all of my different doctors multiple times a month but I'm alive, happy & my favorite thing to do is prove the people wrong who tell me I cant do something! Good luck girl!
The world needs more women like you. You are a rock star bad ass and have soooo much ahead of you!! I applaud you for everything you’ve done and everything you’re going to continue to do!! Love, hugs, respect and good vibes from your friend in Houston TX.
You are the most inspirational person I have ever heard of. This literally just happened and you seem to have such a healthy outlook on everything. I hope you know how truly remarkable you are!!!
I don't know what to say. I watched this video, and saw a girl that is just so positive, and not asking for pity in any way. She is just an incredible person. So positive and just looking to the future and not feeling sorry for herself, nor wanting anyone else to, either. How can you you not love this girl and want her to have the best she can have? What a role model she is. Pure positivity.
It radiance off of her it’s losing from her and you can actually sense and feel that it’s authentic and it’s pure and she has sense of joy and optimism in her life even though her circumstances isn’t probably what she had wanted that’s a decent way to look at life and obstacles.
I'm not even sure how I found you, but today especially this close to Christmas im very glad I did. I am a 31 year old fully mobile mother of 2. However I tend to not have such a sunny disposition on life when thing gets tough. And I look at you and everything you have been through, holding such a happy attitude in the face of life's biggest battle makes you an inspiration to me. So thank you for being an inspiration to me
I love how positive she is, but knowing that a girl so passionate in what she used to do can’t do it anymore just literally shatters my heart. I really hope you’ll find something else that you love the way you loved cheerleading and that you can still do. x x
My boyfriend has been quadruplegic for 6 years, we've been together for 5. It has been an incredible journey! We are from the Czech Republic and we traveled around Europe and USA and our next goal is Asia! You are very strong, keep fighting ☺️. And if you ever consider traveling in the Czech Republic, let me know ☺️
Hey ICU nurse from England here! You got this girl. Your determination will see you through. Whenever you’re hard on yourself just look at how far you’ve come already! Thinking of you and cheering you on from this end of the world and if you ever need any support when visiting England I’m happy to help you and your family if you ever need it ❤️
I love how positive she is about everything that she has been thru ! So amazing to see someone so young have this kind of perspective on life after such a traumatic event happening to them
You are the sweetest! I'm praying for continued strength, courage and faith in the days to come. Thank you for your transparency with all that you share. God bless you. You are an inspiration and I'm a 70 year old grandma. We can all learn from you. Prayers
My daughter had a cat named Kevin! I thought we were the only ones. He was a great source of comfort during life’s struggles. Thank you for sharing your life with us, you’re an amazing young woman.
You nailed it!! Faith, Family, and Friends! ❤️ That's exactly how I kept positivity throughout my paralysis! God will use your smile and attitude to touch other people's lives!
you are the most beautiful person i have ever seen. you’re so positive 😭 like i am blessed to be healthy and i’m always so negative and pick apart everything i don’t like about myself constantly. you are truly inspiring ❤️ pls keep doing what you are doing!
I broke my back when I was 13 (1995) and they (my doctors) told me I would never walk again. While it was a struggle, I did eventually walk again. I still don’t have 100% feeling in my legs but enough I can run. You are definitely a light. Keep your smile. I pray you will eventually walk again. Just keep rehabbing but you got this girl! Stay strong in the Lord.
I'm a disabled vet. Chronically sick. I'm a Mom of a kid close in age to you. I'm Almost twice your age. I have no idea how in the world I stumbled upon your video, but I cannot express to you how amazing you are. Keep that positivity flowing because it had an amazing effect on those around you. You have a tremendous spirit and am amazed by your awesome energy. You go girl!
Just finished watching your video and you are such a positive person, God bless you. Keep up the great work, I'm sure you will achieve success in what ever you do in uour life. Like you said in a chair or standing, your still going to explore the world. Take care and good luck.
I love your positive vibes and I REALLY LOVED your honesty and openness as it relates to questions that can't be answered right now. Good job on establishing boundaries and gently reminding everyone that you are stll human and can be triggered. Thank you for being you. 💗
Your positivity is amazing❣️You’re an inspiration to so many people. You’re a beautiful woman inside & out, & will continue to do amazing things in your life no matter what. ❤️
Also, please never feel like you have to talk about the accident or anything related to it. You have every right to share what you want, and you don’t owe anyone details if you aren’t comfortable. The most important thing for you to share is your beautiful recovery and attitude ❤️ thank you thank you thank you

You're truly inspirational and at a young age with such a positive attitude with your situation and grace where, I've seen older ppl in your situation that I've worked with who aren't able to have the positive deposition. We have been praying for you for months and will keep praying as well. God bless you and your family. Keep fighting Mak
You’ve got amazing strength, wisdom and positivity for a 17 year old. You’re a great role model for younger girls like my 10 year old daughter. I’m going to tell her about you and hope she finds you as inspiring as I have.
Lesson for everyone on earth, life will not go as planned, and when it doesn't, choose to have a positive attitude like this inspiring young lady. I can't put into words how inspiring, smart, positive, determined, ambitious, and faith-filled this girl is.
I can’t imagine what you’ve gone through and what you you have ahead of you, but as someone whose life was turned upside down by a severe case of Crohn’s Disease that had me in the hospital for 216 days over a year and a half and almost killed me three times, I am amazed at how well you’re handling your situation, which is so much more life changing than ANYTHING I’ve been through. I am so inspired by your positive attitude and your sunny outlook on the future. Keep up the good work!!! Also, your mother and sister are angels from Heaven and bring me to tears with their selfless care of you and your new set of needs. I am 42 years old, but I want to be just like you when I grow up :)
You are such a strong woman!! Even after your accident and being parilized you don't let it get you down and that is special. Keep on pushing your going to do amazing things in your future. You also have such a wonderful mom and sister who is always there for you and that is real unconditional love!!
Your spirit shines so bright & I look forward to reading your updates every single day! You and Kevin always put a smile of my face. I can’t wait to watch you accomplish your goals & live your very best life! 💪💓
I was thinking that too, she has a great attitude, I also feel like she would be really relatable especially to young people, not just because of her age but she seems so down to earth and genuine.
I am so glad you were recommended on my feed. You are an incredible woman, blessing and Inspiring to all that see or hear you. God has you in his arms.

You are doing so well, it's great that you feel able to set boundaries regarding details of the accident. Strength is as much about accepting the hard times and giving yourself the time needed to work through them as having a smile on your face and seeing the positives. As a disabled person, I can really relate to having the time to see what the important things in life are. It gives you the distance to help you see what your goals and values are and focus on them. I can tell that no matter what obstacles you face, you will find your way through and achieve great things.
You are the brightest human being and your story is SO incredibly touching. You’re so wise and positive and I aspire to be more like you! I can’t wait to follow your journey and see where this life takes you.
Sophia Malthus is someone for whom you might search. She’s incredible, just like this girl. Her story is on the Attitude channel. These people, including those around them, define greatness. Truly humbling is witnessing such character. I’ve always been a huge football fan, but frankly? Catch the ball or drop it. There’s things society should rethink. Perhaps it’s better to walk away from the colosseum some day.
I was carbon monoxide poisoned 14 years ago along with my daughters. Every day is finding dory, along with all our health problems and disabilities. I've always felt that stronger people need bigger challenges, and We are positive out of necessity. It helped me alot to find this video, just to be reminded that i am not alone. You're wonderful, Have a wonderful new year. :)
So you have memory problems? How were your daughters affected? Sorry, just curious, hope I'm not invading your space. Hugs! I'm sure life isn't always easy but you are all in my prayers.
Your videos popped up on my timeline and I'm so glad they did. You are such a bright, beautiful light! Continue to hold strong to your faith and family. May God continue to bless you!!
Came up on my page today and turns out I'm an ICU RN I am 100% with u when u said u were SO proud of getting off the vent and trach and when you were able to eat again and those are victories we don't take lightly here in the Neuro ICU 🥰 Keep your chin up! You're doing amazing taking it day by day!!!
Hey girl I did Semester at Sea back in 2017. We had a professor on the ship in a power wheelchair and she was able to do everything, just in a little different way! If you want to go, definitely don’t let it stop you. It was the best experience I have ever had. You got this!
Perfect attitude! My son had an accident at 21 & is paralyzed, he's 26 now and prepping for the LSAT! You will have bad days but surrounded by family helps so much! It really is a whole family trauma, God bless you & your mom and sister! You will do and accomplish great things!!! ❤
You go girl!! My son was injured in 2001, he was just 20 months old. He was a c5-c6 and now he c7 on his right side. He got his driver’s license in 2019, we have not yet been able to get the assistive technology. A power assist manual wheelchair is great! Jeremiah 29:11 So many ppl just don’t understand SCI. Many blessings to you and your loved ones.
Chrystal Plott- all best to you and your son. Hoping you and he receive all possible AT devices SOON. As you know, they can make such a difference. For everyone.
Chrystal, my son also had SCI in 2018, when he was only 15 yo. I believe Voc rehab can help with car adaptations ( unsure , however) - my son needed hand controls and thank God, can drive himself! 2 Corinthians 5:7 ✝️✝️🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless you guys with peace and strength and joy !
You beautiful amazing girl!! I'm so in awe of you! My brother broke his neck in a diving accident at age 15 and it was devastating to our family. Your attitude, knowing a bit about what you're going through, is just INCREDIBLE!! The way you find joy in the small things and the way you've accepted this drastic change is SO inspiring!! You are the most resilient person I've ever seen. Your faith in God is beautiful.

I’ve never met you but have followed your story from afar. I am amazed at your courage, strength and perseverance. I cannot imagine the trauma of such a life-altering injury. You are truly wise beyond your years. I’m an ICU nurse and former all-star cheerleader as well. I have seen the first days of traumatic injuries like yours. You are incredible, and your mindset is amazing. You have come so far, I have enjoyed seeing your journey. You really are an inspiration!

I love your attitude about life. Definitely a great teacher to others to appreciate what they have in life and learn to live in the moment - taking it day by day without planning too far ahead in future. Keep strong and positive! God Bless!
