For those asking about charging the Raspberry Pi and iPad while they are connected, I've been testing the Inateck 9-in-1 hub that has a full downstream USB-C port and works great for this use case: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Au2Gtv-gQno.html

Two questions for you all: 1. Would you prefer to see a roundup-style video like this as a blog post instead? 2. Do you want more Raspberry Pi content? I'm thinking Apple Home extensions, disk sharing, printer sharing etc. Let me know below!

Keep ‘em coming! Nice videos! A blog post would be easier to follow when trying this on our own. I would like to see what else could be done with a Pi and iPad, especially if you find any solutions for older Thunderbolt iPads.

Answering your questions: 1. Much prefer this way of displaying content rather than in a blog post. I think you provide enough details in your video descriptions that if people want to find out further information they can find it easily enough. 2. Would personally love more content for the Pi. I’ve just ordered my RPI4, so hope to start tinkering with it soon! Excellent video as always, as a new iPad Pro user this is all revolutionary to me!

Reasons for the lightning issue if you were curious! The 2018 iPad Pros have a new feature which allows you to charge your phone directly from the device. This is a huge change coming from the lightning connector, which has always been extremely limited in power output (even some smaller mechanical keyboards require too much power to work on my 2nd gen iPad Pro. A workaround for this (which I believe was mentioned in the video) would be a battery bank that can provide at least 2ish amps at 5V, with wifi to communicate with the device.

Probably not the answer you want but for “1” I choose “both”! Blog post and video. And for “2” the answer is “yes please.” Could you do more on disk sharing? Is there a way to replicate the WD Wifi hard disk on the Pi for example? What about running Plex on the Pi and streaming to the iPad?

You shouldn't need to add the the "sh" to the entry in "/etc/rc.local" but I had assumed that people would know to make the file executable with the command "chmod +x /root/usb.sh". I have now updated the instructions to include this.

Thanks Mr. Tech Craft, I love the potential of the Raspberry Pi4. I have just bought one on Amazon and look forward to it arriving to install the software as you described... I used to use a BBC model B micro computer when I was a teen ager - that shows my age, and I think this falls inline with the exploration attitude from that era. Magic ! Thanks very much for the follow up video. Following your first video - I was able to get my iPad Air to connect to a pi zero using the lightning to camera kit (which has a full Usb) and a full to micro cable. I had to use the usb on the pi zero and power it independently (either via power or a power bank). But it’s still a great solution and the pi zero weighs nothing (the cable and adaptor take the same amount of room). Ideally I’d like to share the internet from the iPad (ie just have it connected to WiFi for example - I don’t have an lte iPad)- but I’ll have a play with that as I am sure it’s possible. Great video again and thanks !

I followed the directions in the links and it works like a charm. I got an active cooling case (fan + heat sinks) from Amazon. I’m using the Anker cables (the red Powerline+) for both the connection to power and connection to the Pi. I got the HyperDrive hub which is quite slick. The power cable is USB-C to USB-C, but the Pi connection is the USB 3.0 to USB-C. I originally didn’t know if this would work, but it’s fine. The only thing I haven’t gotten working is VNC; I get a “cannot display desktop right now” message. I’ll keep tinkering with it. Thanks for the videos! I never would have thought of it....

Based on your recommendation I picked up a pi 4 for for my iPad pro. Right of the bat ran into a few issues, had to buy a wired keyboard, USB C, a known issue, HDMI interference with WiFi, metal enclosure for cooling compounds WiFi issues. Not so convinced pi4 is a great accessory for iPad pro as you stated.

I did not have ipad keyboard, or rpi4 .. had previous ones though ... but, I loved the idea that I can code anywhere ... specially that I needed that lately alot, while having only the ipad.. so I bough both. My worst nightmares after buying the keyboard and the rpi4 .. and getting everything working.. ssh vnc etc .. i could not get main programs that I use at work ... that has only 64 bit releases .. not arm ... still trying with chroot .. but so far .. I love it ... Thank you again.

Hi, firstly I'm loving the content on your channel, so please keep up the great quality of work. I got the RP4 working with the IPad Pro, so again thanks for the guide. I have a question though. I have many tools such as terraform that I would love to get working on the RP4, not seen anything explaining how to do this or if possible with the Rasbian image. So would it be possible to have a Ubuntu image on RP4 (which I've seen many videos working) connected to the IPad Pro in the same way as you've setup the the RP4 ?
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 года назад
For sure it is. I’m not sure if the instructions port _exactly_ across to Ubuntu, but it should be reasonably easy to figure out the differences. Terraform should absolutely run on the Pi. They have an ARM binary which should be an easy install. In general, Raspbian will run most things that you can find on Debian provided there is an ARM version available.

I know this is an older video, but I'm just now working on setting up my raspberry pi to work with my iPad. Is there any way to access the localhost and ports of the raspberry pi through the iPad browser. For instance if I'm writing a react app on my pi and I run the development build on port 8000 could I some how navigate to that on the iPad browser?

Hi Rob, I have the 12.9 Second Generation iPad running IOS 13.2.3. So I have a Lightning connector not a USB-C. Will this still work on my iPad with a Lightning to USB-C cable and have you tried this? Would I need to inject more Power by connecting the Apple Camera Adaptor (Lightning to USB-A + Power) and then a USB-A to USB-C cable to connect with the Raspberry? If none of these are suitable, would a Lightning 3 in 1 adaptor with Power + RJ45 + USB-A (3.0) provide an alternative to connect the iPad at GBit via the Ethernet whilst leaving the USB-C free to take a stand alone power supply to the Raspberry. Would value your help. Kind regards Gavin

I love the RPi, but if I can get some kind of internet connection (even cellular tethering), mosh onto the home machine via Blink appears to be the easiest option. Nonetheless, Kudos for getting this to work! If Apple releases a low-end iPad with USB-C, I'd buy one to try this out! I only have an old iPad Pro with a lightning cable.

8:50 If you're using an Android tablet, you could use the app Termux. It's a terminal emulator which comes with the APT package manager so you can install programming tools such as Clang and Perl. 11:38 It would be useful if you could use the iPad as a gateway, but that's such an obscure use-case that I know it'll never happen.

This is cool to see the ipad use cases. I work in IT and have a windows laptop that sits at my desk. I have been using my personal iPad Pro for awhile now instead of my laptop for rdp sessions, user account management, and our office 365 stuff. Most things I can do I can use remotely like our servers and user pcs. Emailing and chat I can do on the ipad too. Doing any networking diagnosing is easy with a network troubleshooting app. The only thing I need my laptop for is managing our security system configurations (windows only software) and configuring switch ports and CLI stuff. If anyone knows of a way to do this on the ipad I would love to get informed lol

I had originally seen the first video and was amazed that I had not thought of using a Pi along with the iPad Pro, I have just recently gotten an iPad Pro myself and am looking forward to using it myself as a backend developer. I however have a question regarding text editors for the iPad Pro. I have been looking around on the App Store for the best editor that would support the capabilities I need with code completion for multiple languages (C-based, Java, Common Lisp, Swift, etc.) as well as use a terminal ssh client to access the Pi's command line to compile/run executables. I have been looking at the Buffer Editor and am about to purchase it for HEAVY development. I am curious if you have used this editor at all or at least heard of it, I haven't been able to find any reviews regarding the editor and to be honest it looks very good.

Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. I have a question about VNCing on the iPad via Screens. The Pi doesn’t boot to the desktop when not connected to an HDMI device before powering up, so I have to connect my Pi to a screen every single time I want to VNC it to my iPad. Is there anyway to get around this? Like boot to Desktop no matter if an HDMI device is connected or not? Thanks!
@NicBox
@NicBox 4 года назад
Yes, you can set the pi to boot to a gui login or logged in as a chosen user. Use the raspi-config command line tool to enable this. I can access VNC using the realvnc client on the ipad but for some reason screens just wont work for me.

Hi Tech Craft, many thanks for the great videos to the topic. I use my Raspberry Pi for demo purposes at customers as it is easier to carry than heavier alternatives. Apparently I have missed something. My Pi will not boot when I connect it to my iPad Pro 11. It works like described when I connect it to my Macbook Pro. Do I need to configure something on the iPad to enable more juice for the power-on?

Sounds like that might be the cable. If your Pi works from a wall socket with the cable, then it's not the cable, but if the cable doesn't work from the wall socket, then you'll need to switch. Tom's Hardware has this list of known working cables: www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/raspberry-pi-4-usb-c-cables-that-work,39869.html

VNC definitely works and works well. I've tested VNC Viewer, Screens and Jump Desktop. All work well. VNC Viewer is from the RealVNC folks so I suspect it will work with VNC cloud but haven't tested it.

Transcoding with ffmpeg? How does the pi 4 handle that? I’m interested in running an Emby server on a Pi 4 and have lots of dvd rips and .mkv files that need transcoding to view on iOS devices (transcode to mp4).
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 года назад
It really depends on what transcoding you're doing. The Pi 4 has hardware acceleration for encode/decode on h264, so encoding to that is acceptably fast. I'm still tweaking my configuration and plan to put out a video about it in the next few weeks.

I tried all the things you mentioned plus a USB-C hub to connect my Raspberry Pi 4 via its USB-C port directly to my iPad mini (5th gen) lightning port and I couldn't get it to work. It works fine if I run the Pi headless and connect the iPad to my Pi via my local network using a ssh client such as blink. I prefer using RPD for remote GUI access to the Pi, since the RDP protocol also supports audio, but you need to compile the pulseaudio xrdp modules on the Pi to get this to work. I am also finding not all RDP clients are equal. The Windows 10 remote desktop connection app works well, as does Microsoft's RDP app for iOS, but Microsoft latest Android app version has poor latency performance, worse than its previous version. I have yet to try the MacOS version of the RDP client. The Xtralogic RDP client for Chrome OS also works well. I have used VNC, but the free version doesn't come with audio support.

@@SandwichMitGurke As Onnie Koski says below, there is a USB to lightning dongle that you can plug a USB/RJ-45 adapter into. The lightning port can not do networking directly like a USB-C port does, so the need for the above kludge. The USB to lightning dongle needs to be a model that has a power lightning input into it as the RJ-45 adapter will otherwise draw too much power and won't connect to the iPad/iPhone.

I have been intrigued by this setup for sometime since I saw your first video but I cannot wrap my head around if it’s remotely convenient for me or not and my conclusion is “no”. I have the 2018 iPad Pro model too and I think this thing awoke everybody’s wet dream of having an ultraportable setup with no compromises but sadly iPadOS is locked AF, I have my beef too with the Files App (it doesn’t work, period) and doesn’t resemble its full feature parent, MacOS, if it would, even a little, I wouldn’t have the need for a laptop AT ALL, I’d buy directly a desktop rig. Now I get that this setup is good for your coding needs but in my case, I wouldn’t know where to start with the Pi machine but I’d like to do a similar setup with small windows NUC to have access to all the programms limited to Windows only.

Do you (or anyone reading) happen to have a working method for file sharing to Files.app? I’ve got a pi4 + iPad Pro all working perfectly via USB-C cable but for some reason I’m not able to get a working smb connection. I’ve only spent a short amount of time on it…I basically copied some share settings from a working smb.conf on another system, but I can’t figure out what is wrong.

I’m wondering if the lightning based iPads would be able to connect to an RP using a powered USB hub. I still use my 10.5” iPad Pro. Just haven’t seen a need to pay the money for the newer iPads yet. And the lightning issues seem to be predominantly, if not entirely, due to power constraints. Do you think this will work?
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 года назад
I tried a powered hub and it didn't work. Maybe the hub didn't have enough power?! At this point, I think a different approach is needed for the Lightning-based iPads. One that has the Pi get power from one place with network connection handled differently.
@gadget5129
@gadget5129 4 года назад
Tech Craft So, you’re saying that the RP could draw enough power to work properly connected to the powered USB hub, but it still didn’t work with the iPad?
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 года назад
Brian Gardner yeah, I couldn’t get any further with it. I think WiFi is the key for older iPads, and somebody in the comments pointed me at an open source project that provides a really nice interface over the WiFi that I think simplifies that workflow enough for it to be widely useful. I’m going to see how far I get with it over the weekend and I’ll put out some material next week.

Nice video, thanks! +1 for the comment saying more Python! Also, you mentioned you did some data science. What can you reasonably do with such a setup? Some data exploration? Maybe light machine learning with being able to install sklearn on the Pi? Really curious on that, because I’m getting pretty frustrated with Juno not being able to get some machine learning libraries. A bit more technical I guess, but would love to hear your feedback! :)
@tech_craft
@tech_craft 4 года назад
Very little machine learning, but plenty of data preparation, data exploration and basic notebook creation. My rough process is that I'll take a random sample of the data, work on it on the Pi and then when I'm back connected to a bigger machine, I'll use the same code, but just switch in the bigger dataset. It's not perfect, but it's way better than being stuck unable to work.
