I agree! Sam and Melissa I love how respectful you are of the people while talking about the negatives.

It was great to hear this interesting & nuanced conversation. I'm a therapist & agree with the book recommendation re: Lundy Bancroft / Why Does He Do That? Here's an interesting side event: Many of the women & children who exited the LeBaron polygamist group ended up joining Bill Gothardcand IBLP. It would be interesting to get one of them on. I know Irene Spencer (memoir "Shattered Dreams", "Cult Insanity") has passed, but younger survivors must be around (Ruth Wariner "The Sound of Gravel" or Anna LeBaron "Polygamist's Daughter") should be in their late 50's. They also devolved into patriarchal violence. It's interesting that they left one patriarchal system to join another.

In my experience in the Evangelical/ standard U.S. Christian church, anyone is able to take communion. Each person can decide whether they want to. Communion, for me, is a time of remembering and being grateful for Jesus's sacrifice. Therefore, it's natural to spend time praying and asking God for forgiveness of your sins (silently) during communion. Also, many churches use grape juice. Some do use wine, especially more traditional denominations like Lutherans.

At Southern Baptist Churches, you are not supposed to take the sacrament if you aren't "saved," which means that you have publically professed that you believe that Jesus is the son of God.

I really think that leaving some of these groups is a lot like a woman trying to leave an abusive husband. Some just don't care, but oftentimes it is really dangerous, and a plan has to be put together privately.

In Catholicism you’re supposed to go to confession with a priest before getting the sacrament. The parishes (similar to wards) that I have attended always had confessionals open on Saturday so you can go prior to mass on Sunday.
@NessaBear90
@NessaBear90 Год назад
I never did. Imo a person doesn't need to hear your sins, those are between you and God. I'm not gonna go to confession over swearing 😂. There are just a bunch of stuff being Catholic that make no sense. I guess it's because I'm not practicing even though there are some aspects that I do still do out of respect for my grandparents. I'm not coming at you it's just my own opinion. I have more of a liberal/lax view even though I was raised in an old school traditional Mexican Catholic family.

@@NessaBear90 i was raised catholic in poland and we had religion class in schools, the importance of confession was drilled into our heads. to even be allowed to get sacraments, we had this large piece of paper and collect signs from priests to prove you attended every required thing... every possible religious function was there. tbh confession alone causes lots of religious trauma. you're lucky that you never had to do it, i was forced to confess my sins every month because of 'first friday in the month mass'

@@NessaBear90 I agree, I really only went when it was required to make the Sacraments, hence why I said you’re supposed to.

I'm 78 and had a Catholic education. I was taught a Catholic must receive the sacrament of reconciliation once a rear unless you committed a mortal sin. Also a person is not forgiven if they do not admit serious crimes to the authorities. That is why some gangsters have had no Catholic burial in the past. If you commit serious unlawful things you also must confess to the law. 28:40

@@NessaBear90catholic here. Raised in Mexican catholic family. Still believe in God but also more liberal/lax. I have family in the LGBTQ+ community and I couldn’t dare see how I can think they are abominations. I love them dearly with all my heart. Last time I went to confession was about 13 years ago before I did my confirmation. Tried to go this year before Easter and just couldn’t do it. I find it weird. God already knows my sins and I pray/talk to him so in my eyes I’m good.

This is a great collab! I'm glad you touched on good points, how hard it is for someone trying to leave a cult, and what some of the needs are for someone leaving. It's not just leaving and being ok. I love what Melissa said about asking where someone was planning on going when they left. And that's only one question. There's a lot that goes into it! Not everyone is aware of that. At the end, Sam was talking about men that were told to leave, did any of their wives and kids go with them? It doesn't sound like it, but I'm curious. Did any families leave the church to be with the man that left?
@GrowingUpinPolygamy
@GrowingUpinPolygamy Год назад
Thanks so much for watching! Unfortunately most wives and children did not go with the fathers. We only know of a few men that took their families with them, but in one instance it destroyed the family because the women and children felt like they had been taken from the true church.

Having been raised Catholic, if you have sinned and have not been to confession you are not meant to take the sacrament - they rely on Catholic guilt to govern that one 😅 but they can also say in confession as part of your ‘penance’ (which is basically your punishment/repentance for lack of a better word) that you cant go to communion or can only receive a blessing at communion not the actual sacrament for however long they feel necessary. So kinda similar I think to Mormonism in that way.

I was raised Catholic too, but I think the Shiny Happy People image trumps guilt for most Catholics. Public perception was huge to my family anyways, if I were to not take commuion because I sinned, it would be interpreted as rejecting the body of Christ/loss of belief.

8:31 birthing center "heal dale" Lydia Jessop, the wife of the Bishop, was the self-taught midwife of the community. In her days, a doctor was never present, nor was pain medication ever used. Woman were expected to be perfectly silent during childbirth. Dr. Lloyd Barlow became the community’s doctor. He recieved his medical degree from University of Utah School of Medicine. Rosalee Bistline aka Rosie Blackmore recieved a nursing degree from somewhere in Salt Lake. Dr. Barlow became the YZR ranch’s resident physician where he oversaw births of children to minors at the YFZ Ranch on Oct. 14, 2006; Dec. 20, 2006; and May 20, 2007. He was charged for his actions but later the charges were dismissed for this because the judge thought the allegations were that Barlow delivered babies and didn't report the births, rather than that he failed to report child abuse. In Canada, the midwife was Jane Blackmore. Jane was Winston Blackmore's wife and the half sister of former FLDS Bishop Jim Oler. She has since left both Winston and the FLDS.

So with Catholics there is and there isn't a worthiness for receiving Communion. You are baptized to remove original sin which then makes you worthy. You also receive the sacraments of communion and reconciliation at the same time. You are supposed to confess your sins to a priest which is reconciliation. You do this generally in private. You are technically supposed to confess your sins and repent or you are not supposed to receive communion. You also go to Sunday school or attend Catholic school and study to be able to receive the sacraments. There are prayers to memorize you are supposed to know prior to receiving each sacrament

Who am I? 😁 I am a being hoping to bring more light and peace into the world by exposing the opposite. I love Mother Nature and think she has a lot to teach us if we tune in and listen. I love bright crystals of all different colors and their beauty calms me and brings me peace. The universe is a vast place which I believe holds many mysteries to us. The God I believe in is love and I think we all have the ability to tap into that source energy any time. Not a punishing God or one who purposely murders millions for prophetic reasons. I KNOW that we are all here living our lives and we should make the best of it because the afterlife is fuzzy and no one can say for sure what happens when our souls pass on. My magical thinking finds it more exciting to believe our souls live on and come back to earth if they choose for more wisdom and learning but there is no permanent place we reside based on our “sins” or “good works”. Hope that helps 😁
