I’ve been wishing for years that someone would make a channel like this. I love the Amish/Mennonite community in my hometown. They always look so healthy, vibrant, and happy. The children are always so well behaved. I love the food they sell at the local market and the furniture that they make. I’ve always been so intrigued by these communities, but never felt right about bothering any of them about my curiosities. Anyway, thanks guys!

This made me smile. My dad was an industrial salesman and worked with many Amish and Mennonite people. I have fond memories of visiting his Amish friend and riding in his buggy. They are such sweet people. He passed away recently and a few of his Amish friends came to his wake. Thanks for reminding me of some fond memories of my dad

I was raised Mennonite but am now Baptist. Mennonite is definitely a religion. Just like other denominations. It also is a way of life because that's what they choose.
@@martykropf421 Maybe it felt more like a religion if you grew up in it. I find baptists and mennonites to be extremely similar in their faiths. In the end, it's your relationship with God and you're just trying to fellowship with other Christians, and they are in both denominations. Being mennonite sounds harder to me, but the community is so great.
Christianity is a religion. The thousands of different "groups" inside Christianity (Orthodox, Catholic, Protestants, Mennonites, Hutterites, Amish, Baptists, Pentecostal, etc. etc.) are of course not different religions, but part of the Christian Family. Other religions are Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam.

The way Christianity is supposed to work is you choose to follow Christ and this results you don't want to sin because it would be displeasing to your heavenly Father. Being a true Christian is being an ambassador or to copy Christ. So no rules necessary, your relationship with Christ and through the help of the holy spirit you don't need man made laws. Your conscience and deep desire to not only follow Christ but to be a embassador should be enough. I live in a town where we have some mennonite families, I work retail and when they come in I love assisting them because they are the most sweetest, kindest people. Just the other day I was having a bad day and one of the families came in, I didnt say anything and one of the young ladies came up to me and hello how is your day going, I said ok i guess, and proceed to have a conversation, then a few minutes later one other young lady comes up and apologizes for bothering me, even though she wasnt at all as it is my job to help, and asks me where something was, I took her and she repeatedly thanked me...made my day better ....just love them.
I'm glad they were nice people to be around. We aren't all that way, sadly... human just as everyone else, but those that truly follow Christ, do try to live out His teachings.. thanks for sharing!

America is probably one of the worst places for immodesty... It always blew me away in our travels, how so many other countries dress ever so much more decently... it's a shame.

I am saddened how society in America has changed so much in the area of modesty. I do not feel people have to live my lifestyle, but I do feel it is not a healthy society that flaunts sexuality the way our society does. Not that long ago, little girls had designated clothes for little girls... now... young girls are being dressed as adults, in sexy outfits... things an innocent girl should not be wearing. It saddens me. I hold no hatred towards people that dress in this way... but I do not approve of the dress itself. Just in the same way that I accept and love my son exactly for who he is, but I also teach him and correct his wrong behavior to try to get him to be a better person. People that love me and accept me advise me when they feel I am doing something that is not right. We all can never stop learning, and never stop growing. So when I see someone making steps to honor themselves, and honor God by covering themselves in a modest, attractive way... it is so refreshing.

I can truly identify in your focus on mere Christianity. My mother used to say when we were growing up that her mother told her they were Pennsylvania Dutch. Our line of ancestors passes through Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania and my earliest DNA has origins around Switzerland. I think many true Christians will be surprised at how much we have in common. Thank you Zackery van Dress. I for one was raised by Communist parents and two grandmothers, one Jewish and one Wesleyan. So you can imagine what sort of hodgepodge of conflicting doctrines I was raised around. I am glad I had it. It gave me a great education and empathetic world view. At age 16 I accepted Christ on the school yard. This was a family crisis! LOL Well, in two weeks I will 61. Much life has passed good and bad. To this day I have no church to call mine. I think often a thinking man is banned from the pews. Church is so often a shut-minded trap. I believe in Christ and his death and resurrection unto our salvation. I believe in the great mystery of the Trinity where-in all three, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, are equally God. I believe in the resurrection of all to judgement and for this reason I work out my salvation in fear and trembling.

My grandparents live in southwest Ohio, and over the years, a community of Mennonites have moved in, and they are absolutely lovely people. The community is so kind, and has really taken in my grandparents in a heartwarming way. The patriarch's family lives across the street, and when it snows, they bring all the kids and shovel the (very long) driveway. They check on my grandparents and come to visit, especially after storms. My grandpa put a hitching post at the house for their horses, and my grandma does some of their large grocery shopping for them. My grandparents know almost everyone (several hundred people) by name, and the community calls them "The Old Ones". It gives me so much peace of mind, when I live so far away, knowing that my grandparents have someone checking on them. And it's just a lovely, heartwarming story of two different communities coexisting in a lovely and loving way. Also, the vegetables (and strawberry pie!) from the store they run are sooo delicious.

I grew up around mennonites and the Amish. I’ve always been so fascinated by the simplicity of the life styles (old order). Us ‘english’ are too caught up in technology, living a rushed life style and depend on material things. The old order don’t and I admire them a lot for it. Me too! I've always been very interested in Mennonites and Amish peoples. I don't know why because I don't know or have seen black Mennonites or Amish. Can black people be Mennonites or Amish ? Just a question. Never felt at home with other southern religions. Again, this is just me.

Beautiful answers. I got saved living in the basement of my Mennonite friends. I was a little confused when I found out that their faith was private. After I got saved I couldn’t stop telling everyone anytime I found someone to listen. I’m a Baptist now, however the older I get I see the evils of tv and technology. Bless both of you for putting your faith out there. I think it really helps taking away the misunderstanding of the Mennonite religion. I’ve met some that I believe are born again and some that I wonder about. No different than other churches. I really respect the choices. I’ve often wondered how much easier serving the lord would be without technology to pull me away from my bible and conversation with one another!

It gets tiresome having to put a *"caveat"* in front of every Christian lifestyle choice. The world has so many negative outlooks on personal choices that they get misconstrued or misrepresented by the secular world view. In many ways I envy the Mennonite lifestyle. It really does look appealing to me!
I met Mennonites visiting England while moored up in our live aboard barge. They were politely interested in our unusual lifestyle, our boat and our home educated children. It was a wonderful complement. PS. My daughter now has a PhD and her brother begins his MA in September. God Bless.

@Sarina R I agree, although I will say I do not believe in the idea that all paths lead to God. There are people that say no matter what you believe... you will make it to heaven. The only way to be saved is through Jesus alone. And I do believe we need to be careful and realize there are people that call themselves Christians, but they preach a false religion (the bible speaks of this). Having said that... I do believe that when Christians (who are sincerely following Jesus the best they know how) get extremely unloving, unkind, and intolerable with others that see some things differently (on not moral issues)... this is sad. I believe no one Christian group has completely understood the entire Bible and has all the answers. Once someone reaches a point where they have all the answers for every thing, and only they are right, then I feel that is a sign they most likely do not! LOL. I believe God's grace covers for our mistakes when our heart is truly turned to Him, because He will reveal it to us in due time if that is His will. There are things in the Bible that are completely black and white... it is these things, that when a group of people do their best to twist the scriptures so they can go on living sinful lives and feel they still have God's blessing... these things are wrong, and those types of people are not true followers of Jesus! Just wanted to clarify that while I think Christian groups can learn from each other and should learn to get along better, there are definitely "Christian" groups that are Christian in name only. I hope I didn't come across as offensive, but I just wanted to clarify. Cheers!

I lived in Rochester, WA and there are Mennonites. One thing I wish is that they wear light or reflective clothing. I used to work 6am shift at the prison and sometimes I couldn't see people in the dark walking along the road until I got there. I'm Jew-ish so I understand clothing traditions but I wouldn't want to run over someone by accident because I couldn't see.
I am from NJ worked at rahway state prison 29 yrs 2 months in south Jersey Norma NJ the Jewish folks walk to service on Saturday. When walking on road could be dangerous. There were 3 waves here in NJ 1890s from Russia, then pre ww2 then just after ww2 yours evans w Robinson
I just came across this video today and really enjoyed your candid answering of peoples questions. I am a follower of Christ, but I am not Mennonite or Amish. However, I live in Ohio and use to work in Berlin, Holmes County for a Mennonite family. Here too the variables between groups, churches, etc. are vast. When tourists coming through wanted some history, I often directed them to Behalt Amish and Mennonite Heritage center in Berlin. Much better info than I could give. But that was before RU-vid. I'm so glad you and others use this platform to show your real life. I look forward to seeing more videos. God bless.
There are some Mennonites in Wisconsin where I live who do have B & B type set up where you can stay and visit and partake in chores. I don't know if more conservative Amish have such things.
(12:54) I like accents. I think it's good to let it shine when it's a natural, healthy expression. Shows a bit of where you've come from. Not something to be ashamed of. Afterall, it's good to be more _in_ the world than _of_ it, so not a problem if the secular world has their own way and you have yours.

Here in NC we have a small encalve of Mennonites, great people, great food, would love to go to a more frugal way of life myself, totally love the more simpler way of living.
@@lanelane2276 I am in a Mennonite community in SC and we have members of all color. Most of our POC are Latino but we have 2 black families. Actually, I believe the continent with the largest Mennonite population is Africa. Overall, the churches I've been to are extremely welcoming.

Most my neighbors here in Northern California are Mennonite. When I was researching my genealogy I found a lot of information on my 10th great Grandfather, Hans Heinrich Landis, in their archives, including eye witness accounts of his beheading. When I was telling my 90 year father that the Protestant Church in Zurich Switzerland beheaded Hans Landis in 1614 for being an Anabaptist, he thought I said "antibaptist", and said "no wonder they didn't like him." I explained to him that "ana" means again or 2nd time; he was re-baptizing people who had been baptized as infants, and the Protestant church took offense to that. My ancestor, Mennonite Reverend Benjamin Landis, came to America in 1717 and bought land from William Penn in Lancaster County PA. Because of a clerical error his name was misspelled as Landes and our branch of the family remains spelled that way to this day.
Kitten M: It can be a difficult name to trace because there are so many reoccurring names. There are at least three Hans Heinrich Landis, and one Hans Heinrich Landes. One of my ancestors had 8 children and when their mother died he remarried and had a bunch more children and named some of them the same as from the first wife. And another who married his own step-mother when his father died. It gets confusing. But as far as I can tell all the Landis / Landes that ended up in America can all be traced back to Hans "The Martyr" Landis (1553 - 1614). I worked on my genealogy a few thousand hours, had the four main branches of my ancestry traced back to the early 1500's, and had about 1,500 people in my genealogy database. Then lost it all in a computer crash. A friend of mine in Switzerland drove to Hirzel and photographed the original Landis homestead for me, still owned and lived in by Landis. She basically got ran out of town for asking about the Landis name. They owned Landis Steel and made elevators and escalators, and during WWII made canons for the Nazi's. The company was sold to a Japanese corporation about 15 or so years ago.

And to make it even more difficult names like Landers and Landiss are also misspellings and we're all related in the end. Originally, before it was Landis, the name was Landös. You and I are no doubt distant cousins if we were to dig back far enough :>
Duck Landes : I find your story extremely interesting! My mother’s maiden name is Landis and we did some research on our family heritage many years ago but I think we only went back to around the early 1800’s. The most memorable ancestor we found was Kenesaw Mountain Landis (he was named after the mountain his father won a battle on). He was the first baseball commissioner and also a federal judge who was appointed by Teddy Rosevelt. My family is originally from Indiana but my parents recently moved to the Lancaster County area and we noticed while driving around that there are many streets, towns, and businesses with the name “Landis” incorporated into them. We did some digging and found out that there is actually a museum called the Landis Valley Museum which honors our ancestors and the life they lived during the Protestant Reformation and the life they lived after they moved to America. There are many artifacts saved from the Landis family as well as the houses that some of the family members lived in. The museum is located in Lancaster, PA and I highly suggest giving it a visit!

I am a follower of Jesus Christ myself - a member of a Free Protestant Church and I love what you are doing !! 🌹 Nearly 20 years ago I spend 5 weeks in a special clinic in Bavaria and because there live more than 98% Catholics , I asked our pastor of that time to make for me a contact with true believers - and I got into the beloved group of Mennonites , very small , very nice. - I spend all of my free time together with these precious sisters and brothers . Their pastor was Canadian . His wife Polish . Sweet !! I will never forget this experience !! God bless you !!! 🙏🌻
Wow! What a blessing you both are! I am a retired Minister of Music/Worship Leader, having served 33 years full-time. Even though I graduated from a Bible school, Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I knew very little about the Amish or Mennonite’s. Thank you for a wonderful education. Our basic beliefs are the same and probably a lot of the incidentals that other denominations fight over, are the same. Traditional Hymns versus Praise & Worship is the big battle among a lot of our churches. I like both. I avoid serving God based on man’s traditions. It’s a personal relationship with a real and personal Lord! Relationship first; denomination second, if it has to be mentioned! I am Southern Baptist, but that is not what saved me. It was gods grace, plus minus nothing! After I was saved, I was baptized. I strive every day to live a Christ like life that is pleasing to God and brings him glory. You both are a great testimony and a wonderful encouragement. Wish we were neighbors, but we will have all of eternity to visit! God bless!

Christians and Catholics are different, they believe in Some of the same beliefs, but they are definitely different. Just like there are different Jewish beliefs. I've heard that there is a Jewish belief that doesn't believe the truth about Jesus and that's kinda funny in a ridiculous way. Just letting you know.

What a wonderful apologetic dialogue on your Christian order! Your video presentation is great! We have many Mennonites and Amish in our area of northern New York! Their youth choir gives a beautiful Christmas concerts for local seniors. They are awesome!
I grew up Mennonite. In fact my dad is pastoring the oldest Mennonite Church in Michigan, Bowne Mennonite Church. He and my mom met at Rosedale Bible College way back in the 70s. I don’t attend Mennonite church anymore. I left when I graduated high school. I thought it was suffocating, but now I wish I was apart of a Mennonite Church again. You haven’t been to a church service until you experience that 4 part Mennonite hymn singing. They also have a very close community which is really refreshing in a day and age when people don’t even know their neighbors. And your spot on with their beliefs. Thanks for sharing!

I’m a born again Christian grew up in Belize Central America. There is also Amish/Mennonites there. I love Amish traditional foods. Every market day I would go and buy cheese and cream they make. Some of my best friends is Mennonite. From both conservative and liberal groups. Each time I go to each group/sect to visit my friends. I try my very best to respect their beliefs, traditions. I’m still very close with them since returning to the country of my birth Taiwan. I love your traditional foods. What I believe about baptism is the same, because it’s a personal choice, but I also believe in and do is dedicating my kids to God. But I let them decide when to get baptized or if they want to. Don’t get me wrong I do hope, wish and pray, they make the decision. Because it’s my strong conviction that the relationship we have with God must be a personal relationship with God.

My husband and I are both Christian and are so glad we were raised by Christian parents who showed us what that life is like. We seem to get so caught up in religion and lose sight of the salvation offered to us thru God's son Jesus. As I said in one of your other posts we now live in a Mennonite and Amish communities, I love their friendliness to all who they come in contact with. I also had my kitchen cupboards made by and Amish man, and they are lovely. May God bless you and your family. A sister in Christ.
