I am new to DP101 as of today. I have learned from watching 3 episodes and this Q&A #1.... I am the problem behind my girls behaviors and anxiety! They've learned all of the things I hate for them to do from me! Thank you and Josh for sharing your love and knowledge! I will be watching, learning, teaching, rewatching, learning, teaching... Emmy, Zoey and I will be much happier going forward 💕

I know this comes 4 years after the fact, but thank you so much for being responsible dog trainers/behaviorists. I have had a bit of a journey, startet understanding dogs through my aunt first, then Cesar, then getting distracted by the “positive only” movement, questioning situations, thinking about whether corrections create distrust or can add to frustration, and then finally really understanding everything and how to apply it. Having a very close connection to two Ridgebacks for over 4 years really helped reading the nuances during meetings and getting into their head and how they process. You did a great job stressing the point to slow everything down and differentiating between an anxious wait and a relaxed wait, but I would add that especially here, it is important to slow down each little step. Meaning, beginning with the ritual, and whenever the dog(s) react or get excited, stop, address, wait until they relax, release pressure and continue. Rinse and repeat until you get to the point of actually holding the bowl while they either lie down or sit calmly, waiting, trusting. But of course first of all they need to build trust, and the fact that the human in the equation does not have trust after usually at least half a year means he does not really know how, so they need guidance on that area first. Understanding the difference between aggressive and excited dogs is too much for most, erring on the side of fear. Most people develop their own “issues” around these stressful areas, going into it with fear or anxiety. What’s a dog to do but mirror it/you? So it is important to check one’s own pulse and take a deep breath before continuing or addressing the dogs. Most issues get compounded by the state of mind of the owner. I know I am not telling you anything new, just adding my thoughts on what most people don’t get. “Slow everything down” is a great way of compressing it down! Thanks again ❤ Dogs might growl at the energy of the other person. Some people are timid or even afraid when passing any dog, some might actually have bad energy or feelings toward them. It can be training to tell your dog not to react to that while you are around, but if it is very mild, I like my dog’s reading on people. You could train to tone it down so that they will only react with a raised head or eyebrow instead of growling. That is where the trust comes back in.

We've found that many older dogs (especially the 50lb. +) get very excited when you put on the bait bag and their memories of early training return. Even the smaller breed like to return to the beginning.

Thank you for making this Q&A video Angie & Josh. Your answers were great reminders for me on what to do and what not to do in certain scenarios. I think my dogs and I need to sit down and have a serious talk about our relationship! ;-)

I would love to see more on separation anxiety. My dog is deaf and was rehomed at 6 months, before which he was left on a sun porch all day because the owners found him difficult to potty train. I work from home so most days he is with me all day. How can I help him settle when I leave the house? We are exercising, making sure he’s fed and had a potty break, etc.

how do you let the nervousness go away from the dog without petting them? will it pass like our emotions do? Also when is it ok to coddle and be excited with your dog?

She is potty trying very well but went left alone at the bathroom it’s when it happening the issue. Do not what else to do to help her learns how to settle.

Would you consider doing an educational video for non-dog-owners to learn the appropriate behavior when approaching strange dogs? For example, is it ok for me to hug someone's dog when they give me permission to say hi to the dog, or is it better to just to pet it a little? should I stick my hand out for any and every dog to smell? when I'm walking down the road and see a nice dog and get permission to say hi, do I need to be careful to not create excitement in the dog or can I get down on the ground and be excited with it myself? Thank you

LOVE your youtube channel! But...Angie comes in load and clear with a shared mic, Josh is much softer on all shared videos that I've watched. I keep the remote in my hand and when he's about to speak, I turn the volume up. Can you move the mic a little closer to Josh's side of the table to compensate? I have a new shelter dog that I'm training and your videos have been SO helpful. Thank you!

I have a question I have a black lab puppy. He is a new years baby, and we got him when he was 6 months old when we got him. He came from my sister-in-laws. She just wasn't able to take care of this excited pup all the time when she also has a 1 year old baby girl and a 3 year old boy. So we got him, he did great, we had to adjust to his energy level which is always a challenge for us, but he has to be in a kennel due to my husband and i have to go to work. We tried letting him stay outside, we have a gated yard all the way around, but he dig holes. I asked my grandma what to do (she has 4 dogs at the moment and they were diggers so i figured, hey what the heck and ask). She said she put cyanne pepper on the ground where they were digging, and they learn that its not okay to dig. Tried that, and he eventually started to lick it off the ground. So i stopped doing that so his stomach would not take a beating from all that spicy stuff. Now I am noticing (at 9 months old) he is eating a lot less then what he usually does. When we first got him he ate like no tomorrow, now he is MAYBE eating a bowl of food. He does eat some when i am next to him, or it's out of my hand. I don't want him to rely on me being there to eat out of my hand to eat, or me just right there to eat. I would like to know what I can do, and my husband can do to help him enjoy his quality of life better. Also he is not nurtured yet As for me and my husband, just as a generalization on our personalities. I am the one who worries a lot, and my husband is always calm. I have been trying my best with the dog, but my husband is more into his hobbies then making some with out dog Finn.

Hi, just found your channel and I have a question for you from the Netherlands; how come dogs react agressive to my dog? I have a 1 year old Swissy, male, nutered. Thereś no bad bone in his body, and a real 120 pound pushover. I had dogs for over 20 years. I have to say that this breed is one of a kind. From all the breeds that I had, heś the most powerfull, sweetest, loyal, smart and stubborn. I just dont know why some dogs, mostly Labradoodles or German Shepards, just attack . Sven, my dog, at some point just jumped into the pond just to avoid escalation..

We have a rescue make chihuahua for 7 months and he is still wary of my husband. We know he was abused by a male, possibly with a belt. Husband was dressing in the bathroom and got his belt to put on and Chico became a bowl of jello shaking. Chico does obey his dad but would rather be with me. Is there any thing we can do or change Chico’s attitude towards men???
