Take an in depth look at ant trails: how they work, why ants have them, where they are going and how they find their way on my nature education channel.
The first spring I spent in my house I noticed ants around my kitchen sink. I took them outside, but I kept finding them there, so I traced their march to the kitchen door that led to my upper deck. I washed the trail they'd been using, sprinkled it with baby powder, and that was the end of the ant problem.
Hi Frank from Pennsylvania student Jeff. Awsome. I don't have any wildlife sightings. I've been splitting firewood. And it's been hot. . Beth and I are heading to our Maine cabin in August. . Last year we had a lynx come into the yard. . 😊God bless
Hot and Drought in VA as well. While rain everyday in Switzerland and terrible floods. Still over 3 feet of snow on many of my alpine trails forcing me to turn back. Record snow here this spring. Many mountain passes had over 12 feet of snow to cut through to open roads for spring!
Also, I remember sitting on the patio with my family when I was little while we watched an ant "war" between a group of red ants and a group of black ones. It went on for quite a while and we finally went in. There's a kid's book called City Under the Back Steps about a couple of kids who get shrunk and live with an ant colony for a while. I learned how complex ant life could be from that.
Hi Frank. Awsome video. You inspired me. I'm splitting my firewood today. And some of the pieces have ants. I split them and throw them off the pile. I have one very happy chipping sparrow. It comes and picked the ant grubs off the black top. When I take a break. She comes right by where I'm sitting. And gets her babies grubs. Have an awsome Sunday. Your friend Jeff
My recommendation is to spray Raid or Black Flag along the joints where the floors and walls meet in the rooms that have the ant problems, and to lay Sevin dust along the outside perimeter of the house.
You should see leaf cutter ants. I lived in Costa Rica for a long time and I got familiar with them there. Their trails can be really long with 1000s of ants, mostly workers but there are much bigger soldiers too. I managed to avoid getting bitten by them but I was told they bite hard and it's very painful. I did have them get in my garden and kill some plants and my morenga tree. Be happy that we don't have them in the States except for maybe southern TX. I had army ants show up once down there too. We went to town for the night and when we came home there was nothing edible left that they could take. No bugs were left. For some reason they skipped the outdoor separate kitchen just 30' away. They ran through the whole neighborhood apparently.
Every summer at some point the ants somehow find their way into kitchen around the sink area. I don't want to kill them, so just let them be. After a few weeks they seem to decide that it's not worth their attention and disappear. I don't love them being here, but it's really not a big deal for me to live and let live, knowing they'll leave soon.
I never did anything with these guys either. Keep things clean and they tend to loose interest indoors. Unless! They find I tiny couple drips ped day leak in plumbing!
I also have seen long ant trails that go from somewhere in the yard to my house but I see none inside. They might find some food in the walls or hidden in corners that I barely ever check (under stove, behind fridge, etc.) To discourage them from going in my house I have washed the wall with vinegar. It worked for a while. I got to buy more vinegar.
They are always fascinating. I am in Switzerland now and near the edge of the tree line I am finding alpine mound builders! Huge mounds of organic debris!
@@7Samadhi777 one could very well do that. If it would draw the colony out of the house. Another person also suggested they would feed them indoors! (Which I would not do). I actually did nothing! 🙂
@@natureatyourdoor When I see ants in the kitchen, I leave out a little piece of fruit for them on a back corner of the counter away from the kitchen work,
Ants seek refuge from the heat in summer, but if they’re in your house for food, why not host them by leaving out some tidbits for them. They are very clean and don’t loiter once their objective has been achieved….
No I did not...can you repost. I don't believe I have ever deleted a comment unless from a porn site. And I take great effort to reply personally to each and every comment...even if I don't agree! I welcome all OPINIONS AND POINTS OF VIEW!
