What happens when you put an ice cube at the bottom of the planet -- and then raise the temperature?
Gary is the Director of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute, a Professor of Marine Science at the University of Otago and also holds an adjunct position in the Geology Department at Otago. He has lectured at the University of Oxford and held a research fellowship at Wolfson College. Gary has participated in and led more than 20 expeditions to the Antarctic and Subantarctic supported by the New Zealand and US Antarctic Programmes. His collaborative research programmes have attracted more than $20 million in research grants and resulted in more than 100 scientific papers in peer research journals. He has held the Byrd Fellowship at the Ohio State University, the Blaustein Visiting Professorship at Stanford University and in 2006 he received a Sir Peter Blake Leadership award for his role in bringing together the multinational team for the ANDRILL project, which he chaired between 2004 and 2009.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

"As the Earth's climate has changed, Arctic sea ice extent has decreased drastically. It is likely that the late‐summer Arctic will be ice‐free as soon as the 2030s. This loss of sea ice represents one of the most severe positive feedbacks in the climate system, as sunlight that would otherwise be reflected by sea ice is absorbed by open ocean. It is unlikely that CO2 levels and mean temperatures can be decreased in time to prevent this loss, so restoring sea ice artificially is an imperative. Here we investigate a means for enhancing Arctic sea ice production by using wind power during the Arctic winter to pump water to the surface, where it will freeze more rapidly. We show that where appropriate devices are employed, it is possible to increase ice thickness above natural levels, by about 1 m over the course of the winter. We examine the effects this has in the Arctic climate, concluding that deployment over 10% of the Arctic, especially where ice survival is marginal, could more than reverse current trends of ice loss in the Arctic, using existing industrial capacity. We propose that winter ice thickening by wind‐powered pumps be considered and assessed as part of a multipronged strategy for restoring sea ice and arresting the strongest feedbacks in the climate system." This implications of this important study need to be applied to the Antarctic too.

Nonsense. This is all bs. All to get more money to to justify the their pointless research.

Wow....I loved listening to this man speak.....He was to the point and very easy to understand even though, he was talking about a very complex bit of research and knowledge. I’ve been enlightened by the problem of global warming and what it’s doing to the ice caps and it was so simple to understand!!! Usually, every scientist/ geologist you hear is so complex and utterly confusing you just give up trying to understand them. But, this guy.....he should be the man who explains this to every last country and person alive and we would make a change. I’m going to do a little research and see where the products I buy are made and how- See if the companies are toxic emissions free or part of the problem. Why support the problem??? I want to live- I live on the beach people.....I’m going to be underwater if things keep going like we’re going. I think I need to begin reducing my fingerprint on this lovely planet before then.

@Edward Anthony yep but it is easy to calculate and you could do it too, if only you stayed in school

That's true, and volcanoes contribute a whopping 0.03% of the CO2 emitted. I think you are on to something here.

What's driving the change and the cause dah. Scientists, Ships, aircraft, heated accommodation petrol diesel engines. All that you need to survive is causing the antarctic to heat up. the air circulates around Antarctica and the scientists are heating up the eco environment of Antarctica thinking to themselves it's getting warmer why. Has no-one ever thought about the impact they are having just being there.

no it's a fact the only ones allowed there are scientists and they found it's heating up?
