Sadly, not for me. I agree, this version is great, truly great and definitive, too. However, the most recent versions I've heard of this song show he has gotten into some very bad habits vocally, which might be partly because he's having to use little tricks to get around his voice not being as reliably strong and powerful as it used to be. So I would respectfully disagree with you on the point of him still delivering to this day - but here, surely nobody could top this?
@@AmandaJYoungs He have aged, not been broke to pieces. As the most natural thing in the world his voice have grown lower, he can't sing this in it's former key. This is not "lerning bad habits" or I've been learning bad habits of not seeing as great as I did as young. Tommy Körberg still kicks ass well over his 70' and if you don't understand this journey life is and what it does to all of us, it's your loss.
@@AmandaJYoungs Ah, interesting. I strongly prefer the maturer voice. I find the warbly vibrato on his younger version a bit off-putting. Feels oddly airy to me, also, whereas the maturer feels 'grounded.' Hard to explain. The 2006 on YT is probably my favorite.
Amazing. His voice is so resonant that on the last note, he begins to form an overtone, or harmonic, exactly one octave up. It is so powerful, moves me every time.
actually, Sinatra did have singing lessons and even went on to publish a booklet of singing lessons written by his voice teacher. (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2gfmHsLte_A.html). I have no information about Tommy's voice training or lack of t, but he does sing with flawless technique, especially in breath control. That makes for a mystery. The subtleties involved are just not natural.
Meh, whenever there's a rumor about someone being an amazing singer without singing lessons, it either turns out to be a lie, or they end up losing their voice after a few years, and then it's wither ruined forever, or.. they get singing lessons.
@@EterPuralis I just listened again to Tommy. If there is any doubt that his awesome talent has been perfected through deliberate technique, listen and watch how he shapes - and then changes the shape - of the final note for the last word "heart." Follow from 02:45 and notice how he changes at 02:48/49. That is technique at its most artistic perfection.
Tack herr Körberg och må Gud skydda dig i all evighet Sverige! 🇸🇪
INCREDIBLE! I have watched this non-stop. His vocals are like a well-tuned instrument. He uses every aspect of his mouth to sing the best notes possible. He actually uses his freakin' teeth to shape some of the notes (1:46, 2:30) when he deems necessary - Just astounding. I've been listening to the Broadway Cast version since I was a wee lad. And this...well...It just doesn't get better.
Anthem was written specifically for Körbergs voice. Körberg is a great singer but not the best, but for anyone else to preform this at this level is very hard because of that.
did you know benny anderson was originally going to score the lion king movie with tim rice but dropped out because of another musical that would of been amazing.
Björn and Benny wrote this part with Tommy in mind. One of the absolutely best singers. All times, with very little help from voice education, if any in the 80s.
Coming from a musical theatre family background, I truly love and appreciate this music. Saw Chess in the West End during the 80's, and this still is, and always will be one of the most beautiful, powerful songs:)
The first time I heard this song ( which is only recently ) It reduced me to a quivering wreck .The voice ,the music. PERFECTION. it's like your inside the song as he sings it. ♥️🖤🧡🧡💚
I am in love with this song! Tommy’s voice is unique and embodies hope. The way he says “apart” is so gut wrenching and powerful!! Gives me the chills listening to his voice. ❤❤❤
While this is likely just as it was sung pitch correction was perfecly available back then, and there were even equipment for doing so available in the studio. The difference is that is was much more time consuming to do back then, so it would only be done as the last resort.
Benny And Bjorn had originally wrote this song all the way back in 1975. They had not figured out a way to include this sort of song on a pop record so it was sitting around for about nearly a decade, popping up in late ABBA demos recordings in the early 80s titled "Nationalsang", and even a portion of the song can be heard in the guitar solo of "Our Last Summer". It goes to show how the duo had a fondness for the tune. Which brings us to this video. You could see in the end the joy in Benny to finally see this amazing song work after all this time!
It was basically written for Tommy. Björn and Benny are long time friends with Tommy. Sweden is a small country, and they have been around for a while, since the 60s.
Fantastic song, a fantastic singer, I can't have enough of it and my regret is that it is too short... Thank you very much for keeping ABB's memory alive
Masterpiece for eternity!! No man, no madness Though their sad power may prevail Can possess, conquer, my country's heart They rise to fail She is eternal Long before nations' lines were drawn When no flags flew, when no armies stood My land was born And you ask me why I love her Through wars, death, and despair She is the constant, we, who don't care And you wonder will I leave her But how? I cross over borders but I'm still there now How can I leave her? Where would I start? Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart My land's only borders lie around my heart
Just UTTERLY brilliant. The best song EVER from the best musical EVER. Chess is simply timeless and Benny and Bjorn are utter legends. I recently saw the remake of Chess which certainly gave an interesting modern twist on this classic musical but the original from 1984 will simply NEVER be surpassed.
I LOVE this song - and his voice - and the orchestration - so much! I always cry - after all these decades, it still touches me so deeply - and I never saw this video to this day! Thank you! What an epic song and what a fantastic musical at a whole! (... but we go on pretending stories like ours have happy endings....)
This song is pure perfection and mastership from both Bjørn and Benny and Tommy. A world class anthem that still brings me to tears. Thank you gentlemen for giving us this ❤️
I saw Tommy Körberg sing this live at Chess in Concert. (It was only the songs, not the whole musical) If I cried?! Of course i did, I was a wreck. 😥😢😭
I have loved this song since the musical debuted, I never saw this video before and this song means so much to me for so many reasons. I wish Tommy knew how much his version means to me. I am in tears right now. if you read this Tommy - thanks from a guy in Pennsylvania. You have taken me through some rough times over the years with this song. God bless you!
I come back to this masterpiece at least 7-10 times a year on youtube and listen to it spotify too.. Tommy is the orginal and best singer in my perspective😊
I have listened to quite a few renditions of this song and this is my favourite. It is for me a beautifully composed, produced and performed. All one fabric. Many thanks to you all. X

If some ridiculously improbable set of bizarre circumstances befell me which resulted in my being told I must choose one song that would be the only music I could listen to ever again, I would now be comfortable making my choice.

Tommy Körberg just has a perfect voice for this song. And his many nuances of voice expresses the feeling perfectly. His voice is somewhat rough but yet silky smooth. The combination is what makes it so interesting to and breathtaking to listen to. The arrangements of course are exquisit!! You can be sure he didnt record his vocals wearing those tiny headphones in the video. The video must have been recorded separately for a photo shoot only. Good times. Top quality all around
@Nick Emerson that might be the case, but recording with them would not be ideal because of the amount of leakage into the microphone. i would bet money that the actual recording headphones would have been "over ear" style of head phones that minimize leakage. knowing how technical and quality minded bjorn and benny are i would think their engineers are the same. but who knows what really happened :)
