It is in the same way royal anthems became national ones over time - "national" anthems outside of revolutionary France really didn't exist anywhere yet. By the logic of the other monarchies' anthems being extended to their nations, the German subjects of the HRE in its last days saw this as their de facto anthem - this is evidenced by the fact that Deutschlandlied was put to the same tune.

It was the anthem of Austria-Hungary "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" (and also a personal anthem of Franz II. I. the last emperor of HRE and the first of the Austrian Empire). The germans pretty much took it for themselves. I guess they couldnt come up with something of their own. Just goes to show that Austria is superior.

Before the end of the Holy Roman empire Franz II. I. just declared himself the empire of the Austrian empire and took it with him from a German country guess he was too lazy to change the anthem after stealing it from a dead nation. They would later change it after ww2 to feel more independent from Germany. At Germany's biggest it's military was 13 million men, while Austria's weak little army peaked in WW1 at just 3 million men and that (includes Hungary's troops as well since they were united then.) That's also when Austria was at it's biggest in land (including Hungary's land in the union.) Germany's land peaked during WW2 when it controlled almost all of the Balkans, Norway, France (South France was just a puppet nation), most of Soviet land up to just outside of Moscow along with central Europe and Poland. It only took 8 minutes for Austria to be conquered by Germany while Austrian citizens cheered on the invasion and greeted the soldiers. Just goes to show the Germany is superior in the Germanic world both in terms of military and as a nation.

i think cause HRE (Holy Roman Empire) was old germany and they probaly reused the anthem

The Theird Reich coppied this song and used it for its national pride. And to this day Germany still used this as their anthem just without the "god save the kaizer" part because they arent a monarchy. This guy is a 8 year old who just learned the history of WW2 and the anthems of nations during that period of time. He should read some medival hisotry books when he learns about the medival HRE. And also HRE didnt exist in the 19th century (only at the beggining) I see many people saying that this is the anthem of the HRE durring the 19th century.

This is just the instrumental version of that song

three songs both have the same melody although each just have different lyrics on them, “das lied der deutschen” being the most well known amongst the three (especially the third verse, “Einigkeit, Recht und Freiheit“)
