Loved the video ! Great amount on information and well presented. I've been on keto for a while and it's very helpful for controlling my seizures. I found this video really informative and it highlighted a few things, like having increased ketones for epileptics and this was great information to know. Helps me stay strong that this is the right path and reminds me the benefits and how to make it even better by cleaner keto and higher fat meats. Really appreciate the time and effort that went into the video :)

I recently started carnivore for my epilepsy. Hoping and praying it makes the biggest difference. I was already low carb (Wahls diet), but it wasn't totally stopping the seizures. I'm finding the hard part is figuring out how to eat enough meat without knocking myself out of ketosis. I really need to be in some degree of ketosis all the time, as far as I can tell. So I do eat lots of fat. But I'm still not sure if I'm eating enough food overall. Seems to be a delicate balance. And I can't have dairy or eggs due to intolerances, so that really limits me. But I'm not giving up!

Don’t give up. I have been a carnivore for a year now. I took an EEG in Dec. It came back clean. Was it the diet? I wish I could say yes definitively. I ave been an epileptic since I was 10. I am 51 now. Mine were years apart so will you have the same success. I sure hope so. I hope you try. I am starting to wean of my medication. I am scared but excited.

In a similar boat re trying to figure out the proper macro ratios fat/protein. I’m following MAD ratios with even lots carbs (10-15 total). Been on keto/carnivore for a couple years and am fat adapted. Believe I may also be ‘keto adapted’ bc my materials ketones (keto mojo) don’t bump above .5 unless I do a 24-40hr fast. I could lower protein but if prefer not to bc I’m also resistance training. What have you figured out??
@authenticmslife

@@eriksmith4791 It does sound like you're fat adapted, which is good. That apparently means your body is effectively using ketones, so they're not staying at higher levels in your blood (I'm definitely not there yet!). For sure if you're resistance training I would think you want to keep your protein levels high. Just make sure you keep the fat levels high too, and maybe cut back the carbs a bit to see if that helps. Since I posted my first comment here I eventually did get myself a blood glucose/ketone monitor to try and keep an eye on things. It turns out that I can keep my ketones up high, but when I do, sometimes my glucose goes dangerously low. No idea why that's happening and doctors don't seem to get it either. Even my keto nutritionist is scratching her head on this one. Initially I wasn't eating enough food, it turns out. So I increased to get my protein and fat intake up and oddly, that is causing me to gain weight, which is really not great at all. I'm over 7 months into carnivore and slowly becoming fat adapted. It's been a challenging journey as I have significant health problems that I think go well beyond what carnivore alone could fix. Sticking with it though because I do think it's the best option.

@@authenticmslife Appreciate the reply. FWIW, my macros average around 170(protein)/150(fat)/10g(tot carb) which is 33%/65%/2% by calorie for a total of 2070 calories/day. I usually go over that amount but keep the percentages within that range. My ketones rarely get over 1mmol unless I do a 36+hr fast. After watching some John Hopkins videos, I'm considering adding MCT or coconut oil to boost measurable blood ketone levels since mine are low (perhaps due to long adherence to a carnivore lifestyle). The entire process seems more like art than exact science. n=1

Thank you, I am going carnivore to get off my meds, because seizure meds cause muscle aches and fatigue.

How is Carnivore going for your seizures. I am just trying to start it as I was on Ketovore for about 8 months which helped but did not stop them. I have been trying to find a Dr that knows about seizures as there is a lot about Diabetes and weight loss on the net but not a lot on Epilepsy and seizures. Mine were started 20 years ago after a head injury.

@@LifeIsWonderful675 I only had 4 grandmal seizures from a traumatic head injury. I stopped taking my seizure meds two weeks ago. But still have some restless leg syndrome and fatigue, although it is significantly better, maybe 50%. My head feels good, no dizziness

I'm heading the Ketogenic route due to my epilepsy. But even the Sun warrior Clean Keto protein powder triggers me. I'm vegan so just tip toeing and wanted to complete this while beginning

If I were you I would get off the vegan bandwagon and start eating healthy proteins and fats from animals. I too have lifelong epilepsy. I used to eat plant based too - not for long though because that's when the sickness just got worse to the point I thought I was dying. Going high fat carnivore has changed my life in the best way, and I've stopped having seizures for the first time in my life. I can't recommend it enough for everybody, especially epilepsy sufferers. I wish I'd known about it decades ago. Feed your brain what it needs I beg you - meat and animal fat ❤

This is something my daughter whom has epilepsy is looking into it. However, she also has diabetes insidious (water diabetes) is a question for Dr. chaffee, do we go off Desmopressin on the diet or should it be fine? Glad this has helped you, I send you many Blessings to continue to feel Good 🙏.

Is it not possible that the reason why someone becomes more likely to have a seizure if they've already had one because that neural pathway has been strengthened?

Dr chaffee, i wish you were able to talk to my son. Hes 20, has uncontrolled seizures, on 4 different meds and still gets them. He absolutely hates the meds, he said they dont help. He has seizures everyday, most partials. He has lost hope with doctors. All they do is add more meds. Nobody has told him about carnivore. All the want is more eeg's, more meds, surgery. He has no history or head traume. Seems they came out of nowhere in 2021. Kid needs hope. Its really awful. His dad and myself have just switched to carnivore, but he thinks we dont know about medical issues and he wont listen to us. Hes lost

Has he ever considered surgery as an option? I got the RNS system in 2019 and it hasn't made my seizures go away, but the auras and seizures are far less frequent.

Your comment has made me feel like I’m not alone. My son had his first seizure at 17 in March of 2021, he doesn’t want to be reliant on meds and the side effects really impact his quality of life. He does not have seizures daily, he has them in clusters and there’s currently no way to gauge any regularity of the clusters. Being 20 and living with his gf, he’s not particularly receptive to suggestions from parental figures. I did ask my son’s neurologist about a ketogenic diet shortly after he was diagnosed. Unfortunately the doctor dismissed it and said the medication works. I am realizing that there are other young adults that need this information. Dr. Chaffee, would you create a video addressing this please?
