He's actually not... Too much "dead air"... Morgan spent the entire presentation creating a story, and had absolutely zero silent minutes... This dude spent 4 minutes silent.
I'll be honest, I think his presentation was better than hers. Don't get me wrong, I was rooting for Morgan as much as anyone else (fellow PDXer here) and I was disappointed when she didn't win. However, after watching this routine, I can understand why he won.
Morgan’s presentation was good, I liked how she was so eloquently speaking. Anthony on the other hand actually went to connect with the judges by speaking more in front of them, giving his attention to them not only to the coffees and showing them what and how he’s doing the coffees. Maybe that’s why he won? But overall, both performed so well. I’m curious though which coffees tastes better.
His choice of bean, fermentation, and technique are also immaculate, not too mention his wonderful signature coffee. I'm not a barista, but just by comparing both narations, I can understand his process and reasoning more, thus making a more personal connection to his coffee
@@Dsyster24 He also didnt make any mistakes on the execution, morgan at the start , with the first coffe, spilled almost a third of the coffe out of the cup and had problems inserting the coffe on the machine, while anthony did it way more smoth, also the choice for cups is way better, I understand you get nervous tho
Megan's performance was storytelling like and very magical, but Anthony's felt personal, like he was connecting with the judges like a barista taking interesting and caring for their clients
I liked Morgan's presentation but I feel like I understood Anthony's proccess more. I think this is the more important aspect in a barista competition, explaining more about what you are making and why.
That makes sense. This is my first time watching something like this and I think the reason I liked Morgan’s speech more than the two others in the top 3 is because she created a narrative about coffee as a whole and the region she was pulling her courses from with just light mentions of the process which held my attention as someone who doesn’t really drink or think about coffee often. That said, I recognize why this presentation would win over here. Notes on process/reasoning behind preparation decisions is probably a part of the scoring so I think the places where Morgan fell behind the most are probably less in her speeches and more in the actual speed, presentation and engagement. Anthony is speaking directly to the judges for the majority of his presentation and he prepares more of the drink in front of them. He also interacted with all of this equipment with a level of fluency that made moving between courses noticeably more fluid. She of course still did an amazing job and placing second is nothing to sneeze at but I do see a few ways this could have been judged that would all lead to a similar outcome in Anthony’s favor despite liking her actual speech more
To join in all the comments comparing Anthony to Morgan in this competition, in my opinion the biggest difference between the two is structure. Morgan's was structured like a video, with a perfectly edited script, non-stop information, and even accompanying visuals. It absolutely worked and made for an engaging watch, but I like this one more for how the judges would have actually witnessed it during the competition, rather than the audience after the fact. It is all very personal, with emphasis on his particular choices and attention paid to the judges. I also like the pauses and empty space, it makes me feel like he is focused on his work and is supremely comfortable with what he is doing, as well as it giving the judges time to process information.
Yeah, Morgan's performance would've probably been better if it was presented in a video format and not live. But hers felt less connecting and more prerecorded or scripted.
Brilliant ❤❤❤great analysis ❤❤❤❤Anthony I've heard so much about you from Will at Wills Cafe in Williamstown....God bless you all....Melbourne is the bestest on the planet for ☕️ coffee and I'm trying to find another reason why I still live here apart from the people I love....because farkkkkk me the corruption is out of control.......so much greed and devastation regarding what our farmers are experiencing and omg the killing of the bees 🐝 yes it's happening here....in Australia 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢no words 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
God bless you Anthony ❤ you work for Axil and I love the coffee at Wills Cafe in Williamstown on Kororoit Creek road with awesome Will and the deadly people that are his team including the amazing amazing amazing Greek people that make the best food everrrrrrrrrr ❤❤❤
I was able to do a barista class with Anthony a few months back, he was a great with teaching us how to taste espressos and understand the different tastes. Huge congratulations Anthony!
He’s more relaxed than Morgan, so while she did a great job….that’s probably why he won among other reasons. To be fair, I don’t think her time competing for first is over.
This video was randomly recommended to me, I know literally nothing about this world and didn't even realize there was a World Championship, that being said I enjoyed it and watched both Anthony and Morgan's presentations, it's so intresting as an outsider to see how professional and well organized this event is, and also very enjoyable to watch these competitors (Of whom I only have to presume tons of training was put in) manage to make, showing such skill in their art
Never drank coffee ever but I was blown away by this presentation. Anthony's theme of trust made a great interpersonal connection with the judges and his explanation of the processes he used to develop the flavors he chose really speak to his level of craft that, really, anyone can comprehend. He made it sound so simple yet the reality is that it has to be absolutely precise to bring out the best flavors of the brew. Congratulations on being crowned the best barista in the world!
Yeah his presentation is pretty awesome lol. Love Morgan they definitely chose the right winners! Top 3 is nothing to scoff at and #1 and is inspiring! 👏
Anthony's closing comments truly summed up what is so special about Australian coffee culture and his process, and he presented it so warmly and personally the whole way through. Truly the world champion!
Congratulations, Anthony! After tasting the espresso at the Axil booth, it's no surprise you won! I love the flavour profile and your presentation and signature drink really did the product justice!
One of the most perfect performances and I am sure this would be the great answer to the historic challenges which all of the people in this coffee fields and market chains had suffered and just found themselves at 'Bellum omnium contra omnes'.
Most people focus on the presentation. While, yes, presentation has a significant role on the final score, the taste of the coffee also has big roles which the audience can't tell. So we must trust the judge on that matter. I like Morgan too, but seeing people judging as if they're the expert on the comment section really irritates me. It's good enough for Morgan to get second place. I mean, even the previous world champion can lose on the next year competition.
Anthony's presentation worked with his theme of trust. He set the expectation of what flavors he was to serve the judges and worked to deliver on what was essentially a promise. By delivering on his flavors, it made his presentation that much more impactful. Also, he spoke to them as if they were customers at his coffee shop.
I know literally nothing about coffee or the art of coffee making, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, BUT the reason why I think Anthony won (although there are probably a few I'm not aware of) is that being a barista is about more than just the coffee - it's about charisma and the connection you make with others. After all, it is a very social job. Yes, Morgan's presentation was beautifully eloquent and the angle she chose to approach it from was interesting, but her presentation style might make her feel 'distant' as opposed to Anthony's more interactive approach. To add to that, it's possible that she just spoke too much. There was a moment where Anthony didn't say a word for exactly 1min 15secs, and this was most likely to let the judges really focus on what they were drinking so that they could taste the flavors he was describing.
For me , he won not just because of the engaging storytelling but with all those scientific apparatus and equations. He's a definition of Ted talk + Barista + Scientist
His Story telling wasn't the historical journey rather sales pitch for his Drinks. He sold the shit out of his drink. Even I was feeling I wanna drink that coffee.
I do not know if he won but I will say, if anyone else topped this performance, they may have actually fallen from heaven. I cannot fathom carful attention to flavors at this level must taste like. Well done Anthony. Well done.
So far his presentation was best more than anyone else. Got lots of information slowly one by one. And moreover, he talks to the point. But, no doubt, here all are Master.
i'm currently work as barista maestro in COSTA COFFEE and when i saw this kind of events i felt like how to achieve of this kind of amazing moment to represent your country with passion ❤
Now that I heard his "presentation" he wasn't too focused about global mass extinction because Morgan mentioned that word a total of 8 times which started to sound too clinged to one topic, yes she needed a red line throu out, but it sounded too pressured. He in the other hand was way more "perfect" he didn't make any practical mistakes like morgan did and also discribed how he was preparing the coffee in the shiver. In the end he was maybe just ahead in experience but both did a good job anyways
Anthony is highly focused in the flavor of coffee, he uses beans from columbia although very good ,but not hard to obtain. However, he co-operates with Nestor to use different roasting parameters to activates the same beans' diferent character, he also uses native columbia honey and herbal ingredients to push high the experience of the coffee's flavor. Anthony is phylosopher in birnging out coffee's flavor and taste
I can understand why he won over morgan, morgan is too big of a picture, meanwhile anthony's feels like we just wanna enjoy a good cup of coffee together
I miss visiting cafes in Australia. There is always little chats and the batista being proud of their drinks. While Korea has a giant coffee market, it's considered more as a fuel.
Where do I apply to be a judge? Because I wanna try these! :D Amazing multi-tasking ability, I can barely concentrate on both talking to someone and making a coffee. I'd be like, did I already grind the coffee, what was I doing again?
He started with the word trust, then together, involving the persons who will taste the coffee in the process, he has good language which we highly need in the service industry. That must be really good coffee. He deserves the title. Also, it is really important to appreciate the roaster too.
no offense but obviously she's like the only reason people watch these in the first place because she's a very well known content creator. i doubt you'd even come here without knowing her. it's not to disregard the other contestants, but morgan is the only one who caught people's attention. don't be salty it's just the truth lol
@@heavenlylove4289 didn't say that but 75 thousand people is nothing to scoff at. this is a worldwide championship and one tiktok person isn't really gonna change it that much. she did do great though
Loved this. They each did what made sense for themselves. You could not pull off this theme of trust if you didn't seem totally relaxed and warm. You can't talk about the urgency of climate change with a relaxed and warm teacher vibe. Well, you can, but it may be less effective in a timed storytelling situation. Personally, even though I understood that breaking the glass was meant to feel uncomfortable and it allowed for a great metaphor and the beautiful gold-veined mended cups to be used, I still felt it was a bit contrived so in terms of presentation style, it's all a matter of the taste of the judges. However, I suspect that the flavour of the coffees can be a bit more objectively judged (even though taste plays a part, at that level of taste, one can usually see past your preferences and still enjoy).
A lot of comments and coming back to this, to all: successful hospitality businesses have a key thing: consistency. Successful routines, recipes etc are all consistent. While Ben Put introduced the world to eisbock milk, this cryo-dessicated milk allows for a level of consistency not seen before. And that's probably another point in his favour. For the other baristas there would have been an additional element of randomness to their milk-drinks and thus to preparation and tasting that Anthony's... didn't. But what a weird world we're in that basically powdered milk is now the... creme de la creme.
@@error.418 because it doesn't look standard. I'm currently looking for a high quality timer with extra features and multiple alarms in a small form. Not only for coffee but in general. Have a couple of CDN timers but they've been lame. I did see a Casio timer on Google images which tickled my JPN bias.
@@msupra1894 Ah, it looks like a standard 3-button timer to me, but I can definitely understand what you're looking for. How many concurrent timers are you hoping to use? Or are you just looking for one with memory for multiple timers to call up?
@@error.418 I'd still like to know what brand it is..only because I couldn't find it with google images haha. As for features, I'm not after anything specific other than wanting to find out if any company makes high quality models. I'm assuming there must be something out there even if it's in different industries.
@@msupra1894 Yeah, I can't seem to quickly spot the exact model, but would need to dig deeper. As for quality models out there, stuff like the ThermoPro TM01 or TM02 maybe? The OXO Good Grips Digital Triple Kitchen Timer is also... interesting. The ThermoWorks TimeStick is popular among chefs.
Morgan is engaging but so Scripted like what she does in her TikToks and Shorts. Her presentation is lacking and not smooth and natural as Anthony. Her showmanship is great thou but lacking in presentation of routine. Anthony speaks, acts, sounds so natural, professional and so mature in every way. His overall presentation and routine is just so good.
I read in another comment that Anthony has been competing for years. I'm sure that plays into his comfortability up there. But he also talked to the judges directly. Brought some of his work directly to them and showed them what he was doing. Got them involved and interacting with their drinks -- the discs, swirling, and stirring. He made both a verbal and physical connection to the judges. Morgan's speech was moving. She was articulate and her script was emotional. But she did have a couple of slips during her routine -- at one point she struggled with the machine, and one of her cups leaked down the side. Idk if that cost her points, but quite possibly could have. She spoke like she was doing a tedtalk. Like she was on a stage with an audience. So as a viewer, i actually preferred Morgan's routine. But I can understand how a judge would prefer Anthony. Either way, they're both great. This is going to open so many doors of opportunity for both of them.
I didn't like morgan's story telling. Either way, at the end of the day it's the professionalism that Anthony has that made him get first. He deserves it, really does.
