Anthony Green: If You’re Alive and Listening, There’s Hope

Anthony Green (lead singer of Circa Survive, Saosin, and The Sound of Animals Fighting) opens up about his struggles with addiction and living with bipolar disorder. He describes how his distorted self-image manifested into disordered eating and drug and alcohol abuse, and details his first stay in rehab and being misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. Mayim breaks down the clinical definition, types, and dual-diagnoses associated with bipolar disorder, and opens up about her own father’s struggle with the affliction. She and Anthony discuss the dopamine loop and how this can also apply to technology, and highlight the importance of tackling addiction one step at a time, having an outlet to communicate, and exercising patience with those who are struggling. Anthony explains his process for accepting his diagnoses and managing his stressors and triggers, and how he has been able to repurpose his mania to use as a hack for improving his creativity as an artist.

I’ve been a fan of Anthony’s for 15 years and I have so much respect for this man. Anyone who is a true fan of Circa would say the same thing. I’m glad he is still with us now and I couldn’t help but to smile and cry while watching this podcast. He’s such a beautiful soul.

I really respect him for saying he was so privileged financially. Seriously. I grew up without parents and homeless at 17 so I just had to slog through it. I was basically held hostage, raped, dragged through the mud with crazy exes. It was only when I got into my later 20s I realized how traumatized I was and what happened.

I started listening to Circa Surive and Anthony about 13 years ago and it was literally life changing. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I wanted to show my love, especially after hearing about whatever's going on that caused him to cancel his latest tour with Circa. I've seen them like six times at this point and I'll never forget seeing his kids next to the stage with their big ear muffs to protect them from the sound. That little thing says so much about who he is as a man and a father. I don't believe in God but God bless all the same.

I spent 3 decades of my life a wreck. Therapy didn't work. Medication didn't help. I was violent and out of control and unable to hold a job. Every doctor just said I had "depression" but finally at like 31-ish years old, my doctor at the time who I had recently started seeing asked me how I would feel about a bipolar diagnosis. I was scared, there was stigma. She said after everything, all the failures and shit not working, she was gonna treat me as bipolar type 2 going forward, and changed my medications up to match that. It was like night and day. Within a few weeks I was feeling so different from my usual self, I felt...functional. The rage subsided, the depression wasn't overwhelming anymore. I got a job, I started dating. I'm 37 years old now and married. And now it's 2024 and I'm sitting here crying listening to Anthony Green talk about this. A man who has been a top 3 vocalist to me for 20 years. Thanks for having him on. Also everyone talking about Circa or TSOAF or Saosin but I'm sitting here thinking about his work with Zolof The Rock And Roll Destroyer. Give me that sweet Plays Pretty For Baby

This episode is everything someone diagnosed as bipolar needs to hear. I am one of those fortunate souls to be diagnosed as bipolar and Borderline personality, making me one of those people who experience everything in such a heightened way I feel I am never "stable". One day at a time is perfection for finding those moments of stability that give one hope.

My favorite Proverb A Wise man holds back untill later and a Fool utters all his mind. This is a mantra for me . I used to be hell bent on winning arguments and being right . When I embraced forgiveness for everyone and everything especially myself that need went away .Forgiveness is a choice of I choose forgiveness daily. I realized that if I waited till I felt like it , it may never happen. I realized that not everything that comes to mind needs come come out of my mouth . I also understand that if I get pissed there's a chemical reaction that last apox 90 seconds. and if I breath through and wait rather than react I can respond with Wisdom . This is a conscious decision I make daily to respond not react

@27:30 the discussion about dopamine- People with bipolar and addiction are more likely to have a genetic mutation in the MTHFR gene, which causes dopamine deficiencies. Dopamine deficiencies make people seek out high dopamine activities to compensate. It’s super common and is thought to affect 20-50% of the general population. Best thing I did was get a genetic test, and adjust diet/supplementation to correct deficiencies (specifically vitamin b9 and folate/methylfolate) which affect dopamine production

Any creativity process has lots and frequent “maniac” episodes, followed or not (usually yes) by “depressive” or “down” ones. When your mind is speedy going, you feel a mix of workalcoholism and fear to loose “the moment”. You feel yourself in these moments like a god, goddess in my case. It’s the hardest “drug-without-drugs” episode. Followed by a depressive void. This architect’s word. It means we’re bipolar? No. But I think all cretive persons are more or less in the spectrum…Thank you Jonathan and Mayim for another great Tuesday! 🙏🏽💜Missing Bevisodes though. And I believe she has a lot to say about this particular one!

I had a nonfiction book called "Touched with Fire", which covered creative people throughout history who had bipolar disorder. Being in the music business I’ve met a lot of those workaholic artists who deep dive in and go into a depressive or low point afterwards because they’ve mentally drained themselves too long and need a break. Chemically this makes sense since after you’re done there’s not a whole lot of endorphins and dopamine, but for bi-polar folks it can be a marathon and so much so that it’s beyond unhealthy but more life or death. I’m bi-polar II and I’ve gotten a pretty good gauge on who might be going through the cycles based on where they’re at on a project given the time they’ve spent on working on it. For example, let’s say you’ve got two painters (a/b), both are tasked to complete 6 pieces of really great large format paintings. Both start and finish the first piece of work and feel good enough and still in a creative mode to start and finish another piece. Both painters finish, but (a) takes a break for a day or two then gets back into it, while (b) doesn’t take a break and immediately starts another piece. Now (a) starts their third piece while (b) is finishing their third, then (b) starts their fourth piece. Painter (a) finishes their third and takes a break for a couple days while (b) is still working on their fourth piece. When painter (a) starts their fourth piece, painter (b) is only 3/4 of the way through their fourth. When painter (a) finishes their fourth piece, painter (b) is midway starting their fifth piece, so painter (a) takes a break for a week this time. When painter (a) starts their fifth piece, painter (b) is almost done with their their fifth then starts their sixth piece. Painter (a) finishes their fifth piece, takes a couple days break then starts on their sixth while painter (b) is only 1/2 way done. Painter (a) finishes their sixth piece while painter (b) hasn’t finished theirs. If you’ve read through all of that and it the painter analogy makes sense to you, thank you for reading all of that. If it doesn’t make sense to you, that’s good! That means you don’t have to worry about that because it really shouldn’t make sense, but it does when you’re bi-polar. Maybe 6 paintings isn’t a healthy load to take on anyway in what’s supposed to be a short period of time, but imagine not taking a break through all of that and having your pace keep slowing down till you can function while all of those fleeting thoughts are still constantly flowing through your brain but are now in a feedback loop. That’s what it feels like to be bi-polar.

I've been patiently waiting for a guest who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and I was NOT disappointed. I was diagnosed 25 years ago, and have had the hills and valleys of function that go along with that. I was very fortunate to have landed on the right medication fresh out of the gate, and I still take it, but I realise not everyone is so fortunate. Anthony Green, whom I was not aware of prior to this, was such an interesting guest. His honesty about just being okay with trying to be better, and trying to be mindfulof his mania cues, and be as mentally healthy as he can be, was refreshing. I also really appreciated how he recognizes how fortunate, and privileged he was growing up, and that others are not. He was quick to turn down the praise, even though he was worthy of it. This was such a meaningful conversation, and I saw a lot of myself in the sentiments that were expressed by all of you. Thank you so much.

So much admiration for Anthony Green/Saosin. A man with an incredible voice but also courage to admit/fix the issues he has.

This is my second time listening to this interview. It's so good. I have been trying to learn about Bipolar so that I can be a better friend and ally to a friend that was recently diagnosed with Bipolar 1 Anthony seems like an amazing person and he is so very inspirational.

Thank you for another brilliant video. I've been enjoying this series so much. It's like the perfect antidote to loneliness. This one especially has spoken to me. I've been doing physio for many weeks now on a physical injury which has had a massive impact on my mental health, and listening while doing my exercises has been so, so majorly helpful! Thank you :)

Like a lot of people, anxiety and depression have hit me really hard in the past year or so. This was one of those mornings where everything is making me overwhelmingly sad, I can't stop crying over anything and everything. And then I saw the title of this episode 🥺

Thank you Anthony for being the black sheep in your family and shining light on this sensitive issue many face including myself. Hearing it from you and giving credit to others who’ve gone through it as well is what makes you the endeared man you’ve come to be. Just know that you are understood, loved and supported. Also, you fuckin Rocked the Fox theater in Pomona back in 2017. 🤘🏼

Listening to Anthony talk about his experiences are very eye opening and relatable. The only thing I didn't like was the comment about having great things but not being able to be depressed. Throughout life, there have been times where I felt like I should be happy for the things I have worked for but I still felt completely miserable. For those who don't understand, I am happy for you and I promise I don't mean that sarcastically. However, if you do understand, I hope you fight for your happiness every day. As long as you don't hurt yourself or others.

This was like watching a boy version of myself describe my adolescent and teen years, not just similar but word for word. I have never in all my life had this happen. Asthma, always sick with repository infections or bronchitis, compulsive over eating, no friends at school got picked on when I actually went.... drugs and alcohol to fit in and have "friends". This is the first I have ever heard of Anthony but I am glad to ran across this so Thank you!

I ve been to that dark dark place so many times I’ve stop counting. Life can get better. I will never give up on survival of this time I have on this earth. It helps with my chronic condition when I help others. The light is better than the darkness. Some days are hard but I try to do one thing to start. Just take a shower then just answer emails then just make breakfast. Withdrawal and isolation is the spiral to the darkest black circle. Thank you for talking about mental difficulties

I believe this every single day? I’m severely handicapped and depressed by a Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, an injury worse than death and the worst imaginable! But it’s real! My emotions constantly change and my characteristics and emotions! But? Yea, you’re crazy, and I say no more because I’m your biggest fan and adore Saosin and Circa Survive because what you sing about is what I feel
