Well, the reason why he didn’t become as big of a singing star as he should have was a combination of many factors… He was always struggling with insecurity, and living up to and past everyone’s expectations. He was kind of a perfectionist when it came to things that he did. The folks around him wanted for him to be a teen idol in the vein of Bobby Darin or Ricky Nelson, but Tony was very ambitious and wanted to be more than just that, and he wanted to be the best that he could be and surpass people’s expectations-he was a perfectionist in many ways. He was unfortunately competing with people like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra for the music charts and considering that he had a more subtle, understated yet still sweet voiced approach just didn’t work out in his favor. His insecurity and anxiety about not being good enough for himself and meeting and surpassing people’s expectations caused him to hate the sound of his own voice, remarking about how terrible he thought he sounded when he first heard himself sing soft jazz tunes. Later in life, he himself regarded his singing career without much fondness, calling his discography as being in his own words “second rate”. Kind of breaks my heart that his insecurity and desire to surpass everyone’s expectations for him led him to hate the sound of his own voice. Christ, the poor guy couldn’t get a break.
Is it done? Are they gone? Am I alone? I am alone, it's done, they're gone I am a genius, Charles, you are an unadulterated genius You are an indisputable extraordinary, what was that? Not a thing, you're a fool, you are alone And it begins Careful, Careful Mustn't get excited, mustn't overdo it Softly, tip toe You'll get used to it in no time Look at it! Beautiful! What a place to live, what a place to write! I shall be inspired I shall turn out elegiеs and sonnets Verses by thе ton At last i have a home and nobody will know No one in the world Nobody will know I'm here! I am free! I am free! Goodbye my friends and good riddance Pardon while I disappear Come see me soon in my hideaway If you can find me I'm here Farewell you blood sucking landlords Pouring your threats in my ear Good luck forever to you and yours If you can find me, I'm here And I'll stay Cozily hiding by day During the day I'll resign Waiting till you go away But at nine Masters of all I survey Everything gets to be mine to own Mine to use Mine to write all the poems I choose All alone, only me and my muse And forty pianos and ten thousand shoes Farewell Neanderthal neighbors Swilling your pretzels and beer Fair weather friends will you miss me now? If you can find me I'm here Goodbye despoilers of beauty Ruin another career When you wake up with one genius less If you can find me I'm here And I'm free Free as a bird in a tree Free as the slippers I wear Free with a years warantee Free as air All of these products and me All that I ask is a chair that tilts Books to read Light refreshment before I proceed And a blazer or maybe a tweed The barest essentials a poet would need Live in your barbarous jungle Screaming for ways to get clear When all the screaming has died away Come and visit my hide away I will be glad to provide a way If you can find me I'm here I am here I am here I am here I am here
i know!!! it's so brilliantly chilling, frightening, and really leads you on to make the ending even weirder, when the entire film is so seemingly 'wholesome' up until that end, but it's really not. there's always an odd looming subtext which you can't quite pinpoint.
I like to study musical theory and composition, and what I love about Evening Primrose is all the hidden dissonance beneath the surface. Like in this song, it has a fairly typical chord progression and vocal line most of the time and sounds celebratory, but contrasted against the meandering chromatic strings and piano runs and the oddly staccato jarring horns it just sounds really manic and off-putting. The whole film is done like this. The waltz scene at the end with the flautists, it's all normal upbeat waltz rhythm and soft timbre flutes but they're playing the most dissonant notes and melodies and it sounds super weird and ominous but everyone acts like it's totally appropriate dance music for a celebration. I love stuff like that.
