What is the difference between anthropology and sociology? I get a lot of questions like this one so I made a video on it! Anthropology has four main subgroups: linguistic, cultural, archaeological, and biological. When people get anthropology and sociology confused, they are usually getting cultural-anthropology confused with sociology. Cultural anthropology, through ethnographic research, tends to focus on the individual level of the human experience. Sociology usually focuses on the group level through methods such as statistics. This is just one of the many differences between these two fields and I hope it helps anyone who needs it!

I find myself using the two terms almost interchangeably. If sociology is the study of the struggles faced by different cultures and groups of people, and cultural anthropology studies the beliefs, customs, and development of these same groups, how can you avoid saying that these two disciples are not intertwined?

Sociology undergrad here, you did a really good job explaining the difference between the two; given there is a ton of overlap and the fact you only took one soci course. Bravo! You're half right when you say sociology is primarily focused on statistics. There are definitely PhDs and profs (called quants) who exclusively use those quantitative methods. There are also profs who exclusively use qualitative methods (open ended surveys and interviews). Worse yet, ethnography is a recognized, legitimate qualitative method that those profs use! I haven't really heard of someone using both qualitative and qualitative methods (they should!), but I've been out of uni a while now so I could be wrong. With further regard to ethnography, we as sociologists recognize the greater society we live in and we also recognize mini-societies (subcultures if you will) of this greater society (ex roofers, fandom/comic con fans, hockey players, etc etc). So ethnographers would live in and study these subcultures and write about their norms and mores, which is also what cultural anthropologists do lol. There are other distinctions. One is that sociology focuses on the relationships between people and anthropologists focus on culture (ie way of life). Another distinction I've heard is that sociologists have the paradigm that culture is a product of society so we study society. Anthropologists operate with the opposite paradigm, where society is a product of culture and so they study culture. Even after doing my undergrad, it's still hard for me to see where one ends and where the other begins...at least with cultural anthro (the other three are pretty distinct). Oh my gosh, thank you! I agree with you 100% and I wish there was more academic representation/anthropology representation online... Anthro has some amazing overlap with STEM (bio especially) and I have had the best experience. I focus on biological anthropology and the "human" perspective it offers is amazing :)

Nice video! I'm a sociology major so hopefully I can provide some insight to the sociology side? One could argue that the fundamental unit of sociology is social interaction. Things such as meaning and our realities of how we view the world precipitate from social interactions. So sociology while scientifically driven, can also be extremely abstract and profound just like math or philosophy. Sociology focuses on how humans build and change social structures (large ones like society, or small ones like friend groups) and act as individuals or collectives within these structures; it's concerned about our construction of reality and changes in our behaviors as a result of social interactions. Soci grad here too. You give good supplement for this video! And I want to add something more that may make it more clear. It is that the way of understanding the base of society as social interaction is just one kind of perspectives of sociology to undertand the consitution of society, which is called symbolic interactionism.Aand many other streams of soci give different explanations, like Talcott Parsons who thought society can only be organised when its people internalize all those values and rules and follow them. Generally speaking, sociology has so many ways of explaning this society, it really cares about how society is possible and why it doesn't end up as war of human beings, which is a classic question raised by Hobbes. Maybe that is also some kind of point of the difference between these two subjects, sociology and anthropology.

I like how you simplified things down to how sociology is statistics focused, large groups, social problems and social structures whilst anthropology is divided into four subcategories of linguistics, cultural, biological and archeological and cultural anthropology specifically ethnography focuses on individual experiences within that particular group or culture. I love both, and I’ve always loved how sociology addresses social structures and social problems. But I also love how anthropology doesn’t necessarily have a political or social justice agenda, and is purely on the anthropology side of things. Both are super interesting to me but I find it so easy to mix them up sometimes. Even though I have read few sociology books, and a few ethnography books and watched a lot of youtube videos on anthropology and linguistics. Its really helpful for me to be able to separate the two fields of study and to delineate the differences between them.

I would say sociology doesn't have a social justice agenda. It is just about the FACTS and those facts may help social justice but anthropology such as applied anthropology also may help social justice.

This is a fun topic! I think of them as being scientific in different/complementary ways and they are also converging somewhat as you mention. Anthro is holistic, so it integrates biological and material culture/physical analyses alongside more humanistic research methods like ethnography, although quantitative analysis has always been part of American anthro. Soc was historically intended to study the science of society and arose within an academic community enamored with quantitative analysis, so they've been more interested in quant, survey research, etc historically. The difference is still there somewhat but anthropology and ethnography have become especially influential, including in soc in the last 15 years, largely because of their advantages for exploring human needs/drivers in greater depth (like digital tech) and with more complete context than quantitative methods or laboratory studies generally allow. American anthro also benefits from being a relatively new field that could addresses some of the shortcomings of others, like soc and bio, while also integrating insights from them. Thanks for you video, I totally agree with you on the overall description, I would add that sociology is actually combining statistic and qualitative research. You can have a look to Pierre Bourdieu (Sorry I'm French ^^) he imported a lot of anthropology methods to sociology as he thinks that statistics creates / rationalize things that do not exist on the field. He has a more structuralist approach of sociology I definitely recommend you to check him out ^^.

@@AliviaBrown yea maybe back in the day like the 1800s when it was founded up to maybe the 1950s 🤷‍♀️ it was more quantitative and stats based. And over the years up to now there was a qualitative focus that was added to that. At uni I definetly got that mixed qual/quant feel when being taught...but I feel that once you got higher profs would be either or.

I’m currently serving in the military and I’m so fascinated with this field. I’ve gone ahead and re-enlisted for another four years so I might earn my degree in cultural anthropology. Hello Mr. Veteran! I don't know much about anthropology and the military, but I do know there are military sociologists that work with the US mil. You might have heard the term "total institution" and is what the military is. Given the similarities between soci & anthro, I can imagine there are tons of studies on the military from the anthro POV. Cheers and thank you for your service!

Im from Malaysia, and my course literally named "Sociology and Social Anthropology" that's mean i study both.. eventhough that a difference between this two field, the overlap of this study have shade the boundaries away.. like you said, in this 21st century, some Anthropologist may use and add on sociologists method to richer they founding, and vise versa some Sociologists might use Ethnographic study to get deep understanding about people that they research on...

Well you convinced me to take social Anthropology at uni... I made the very controversial decision to continue studying at the age of 22 in hopes of becoming a psychologist. However my local University only offers a BA in humanities program that eventually leads to higher education in psych (honours etc.) granted you take psych as your main subject. So other than having psychology as a main subject I had to choose between all these humanities subjects that I've never even heard of... Eventually it was between sociology and Social Anthropology, and I think I'm personally just far more interested in Anthropology. Anthropology being more focused on the individual and their day to day lives within a community strikes me as much more intriguing then sociological issues... Thanks for the insight!

Which subfield of anthropology are you studying? Because in socio-cultural anthropology you definitely focus on people, maybe sometimes in interaction with animals, but the focus is on human lives

If anthropology looks at things from less of an overall-group perspective, why does political anthropology exist? Some websites say the difference between political sociology and political anthro is that the first looks at it from more of a top-down perspective, and the latter from more of a bottom-up perspective. Another website suggested that political anthro = political sociology + a broader historical and cultural perspective. Are any of those right?

Its funny that you would use Google to help explain this. One of the things I find myself thinking about constantly is technology,our perception of intelligence and how one day the majority may have access to a device or tech that they would be able to use in the university and how that may change how we think about what it means to be an intelligent individual. For example a person who has access to the best technology may be viewed as an intelligent individual.

isn't law usually one of the highest paying jobs? if you're looking into studying anthropology while quitting law school, it might not be the best thing to do personally but you do you!

Hi Maria, you'd be interested to know that laws are a good metric of what is considered normal in society. Theft, assault, and murder are good examples of this. We as a society find these actions harmful and vulgar so we have laws that punish people who engage in these behaviours (or commit these crimes).

Massively helpful, I'm struggling to workout the differences here in the UK -where we tend to call it Social Anthropology. Its also often combined with Sociology too. Before this video Social/cultural Anthropology just seemed to be Sociology with Ethnography/participant observation but your video has really helped explain. thanks

Hello! All of these fields are such amazing ones. If I were to boil these down extremely simplistically, anthro is studying human experiences, sociology is studying human statistics, and psychology is studying the human mind. A lot is left out in this (clearly) but it may help get you on the right track. Good luck!

This video is so helpful, it helps me clarify Anthropology and Sociology clearly enough. The most important difference between these two major, in my opinion, is how we conduct the research: for Sociology we are more likely to use the quantitative method, Anthropology we use the qualitative method. Hi Shallom! First of all, I think it's amazing that you are already thinking about what path you want to take for undergrad! At most colleges, you will have a lot of flexibility with what courses you take so don't put too much pressure on yourself in high school :) With all that said, I think to best prepare for a degree in Anthropology/Sociology, history courses are a great place to start. This will also depend on what your high school offers. Best of luck and don't hesitate to reach out!

I don't know how much I can help but you might also try and get a leg up by taking classes at your local community college. It wasn't until I graduated high school that I learned AP classes are mostly complete bunk (they do help boost your GPA and college admissions officers like them, but most colleges won't take them for credit, even if you did very well), and it's better to take community college classes if you can because those will always transfer for credit (I tried to while I was in high school, but since I only could take online classes over the summer I always was unable to sign up because the non-high school students got top priority over me). Most community colleges offer a variety of Anthropology, Social Science, and other similar classes that most high schools don't offer so I think that will allow you to explore the major (hopefully you won't have trouble signing up for classes like I did!)

I didn't really know the difference between these two until now, and so I always thought to myself I want to do sociology. Now I'm starting to think it was anthropology that I wanted to do the whole time. Just a short question: does anthropology involve environmental issues by some means?

An interesting environmental anthropology project was based on Gerald Murray graduate study of Haitian land tenure which he told USAID he could reforest the land at a much cheaper cost than USAID. Which instead of like in prior projects by using his understanding of Haitian small-holders, he drastically changed the USAID’s approach. Instead of trying to convince small-holders that trees were valuable for their environmental services, he emphasized fast-growing species that could be sold for firewood, charcoal, and lumber. By giving the trees to the small-holders and allowing them to harvest and sell them whenever they wanted, he motivated them to plant and care for the seedlings like any other valuable cash crop.

Of course! Broadly speaking, psychologists usually do research with larger sample sizes so they benefit from anthropologists by acknowledging that the entire population is not representative on a person to person basis. Each person is different and anthropologists will give more individualized attention to one or a few people. I hope this helps!

after watching your video, thinking of a way to simplify this with a half-educated guess, if Anthropology is macro then Sociology is micro? well, there must be a simpler way to relate both fields of studies that would make enough sense lol!

Yes relating these fields can be tough haha! And while I think both ways could be argued I would actually say anthro is micro and sociology is macro! Just because anthropologists usually look at smaller populations while sociologists look to understand entire populations and "majority" statistics if that makes sense. I've never thought about explaining these fields like this-thank you!

I think anthropologist also look at the 'macro" dimensions of problems. At least, i do that ahahaha (I'm and anthropologist as well)

Hi! And yes I think you are absolutely correct. Overlap between these fields is undeniable so there will be sociologists who think micro and anthropologists who think macro. I think this video was just a more general summation of the fields but you could not be more right :)
