i really thought i couldn't grow anthurium without ultra high humidity until i saw your first vid on no drainage glass container. it definitely was a total game changer for me, major confidence boost and a new perspective on everything soil/substrat related. now i have five gorgeous and thriving anthuriums, thanks to you. they are literally the most chill plants for me, so obsessed with them. love your content 🌱💕

Instant follow for not saying "bright indirect light" like everyone says for every plant!! Drives me batty. "Bright shade, dappled sunlight is SO much more specific, thank you!
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the follow! Most houseplants are shade growing tropical plants. That’s why so many common houseplants are given the “bright indirect light” instruction. But most ppl’s homes are still wayyyy too dark and that causes plants to slowly die. Basically if you are walking a trail in the woods on a sunny day, the light hitting the ground is “bright indirect light.” Little to no direct sun, but rather bright shade. That’s similar to the light these plants get growing under the rainforest canopy😁
@ladylove34
@ladylove34 5 месяцев назад
@@plantgayforlife exactly!! I always had easy plants and switched to harder ones and just learned that it's too dark inside! I will search for info about a plant and I really want to know how much light it absolutely needs and how much (direct sun or darkness) it can tolerate. Thanks for tips. Looking forward to watching more 🙌🏿

I have quite a number of anthuriums; they are mostly living in my cabinet as they seem to thrive in humidity. I planted my anthuriums in my own chunky potting mix. It’s interesting that you explained certain leafs type require certain watering.
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife Год назад
I used to have them all in cabinets and grow tents as well. But as I curated my collection, the ones I kept got too big and had to be moved out. I even have one anthurium that's become a 3 foot tall floor plant! That's when I realized watering and humidity around the roots was more important, and now most of my anthuriums don't flinch when the humidity drops below 30% in the winter!

Thanks for the tips, I consider myself an intermediate gardener but I've struggled so much with my Anthurium and Alocasia (literally all dead or dormant at the moment) that I gave up on them completely. Last week, I bought some Pon and self-watering pots on a whim and I think I'll try to save them... especially since I just got myself an Anthurium pedatoradiatum for $10 in the clearance section! I just love this one and would love to see it mature instead of dropping its only remaining leaf. I've always wanted to hybridize it with a super dark velvet-leaf type Anthurium too!

Anthuriums are great and not difficult once you understand their needs! That being said…terracotta can work against you in a household environment. The dry air (compared to, say, a greenhouse) will dehydrate the substrate much faster. I know someone who grows anthuriums VERY well in terracotta but he waters them every other day. The vase/no drainage-hole method I use allows me more time in between waterings so that I’m not constantly watering plants. I can leave for a week and return, and my plants will not be dehydrated. Anthuriums are not like philodendrons, most of them require consistent moisture and will not grow well if they dry out in between waterings too often.

I'm currently growing my first anthurium from seed (Pedatoradiatum) so this will be invaluable for the time to come even though I'm growing one of the terrestrial varieties, I'll be sure to put my little one in a glass container so I can monitor his root development and humidity, it was one of those things that bothered me and wasn't able to figure out. It does make sense though.

@@plantgayforlife So a little update, Everything went great and then the little fucker started dying on me, apparently they do not like to have water ON the leaf..... such a diva. Got it fixed though and the second I got things right he pushed out his 4th leaf (yes he's a he don't ask me why he just is), kinda surprised cause its the first leaf that looks 'velvetty' and easily 8x times the size of the first couple of leaves. Looks like I'm finally doing things right! Being emboldened by my 'succes' I ordered more seeds.... crystalinum, gloriosum and waroqueanum are now happily growing next to their big brother in their tiny drainage hole free transparent plastic cups and they are thriving! Can' t wait for them to put on some size.

Awesome video, both educational and inspirational! Ironically enough I am on the market for my first Anthurium, I have over 200 houseplants with a preeeetty diverse collection (at least I think so 😆) I am thinking of ordering from Eucagenera (Regal Shield and either the Crystallanium seedling along with another, maybe the Bessea) unless there are sales or another surfaces and catches my 👁 and you're right they do look intimidating 😅 but are sooooo intriguing. Will you be doing these types of videos with other Genus's? because it's genius, 🙃💦🌱💫 thanks for the great video!

Appreciate that! I might do videos on other genera if I feel like I know enough to properly educate others. Ecuagenera is a great place to start. If you're in the US I would order from ecuageneraus.com. They have a florida location and a new california location and those plants will go through much milder shipping stress than plants being imported from their ecuador location.

Cool info… ill be receiving my anthoriums from Eddy Pranoto of Indonesia this Feb 14. Hope they will arrived healthy… My plan will be in an outside environment, well.. i live in Phil so i have good weather condition all through out the year which is good for anthoriums, the only thing i have to consider is the direct sunlight. Raining season wont be a problem as i can just put plastic shed above. 😂😂😂

Use a shade cloth and you’ll be fine! And make sure the rain doesn’t drench them. Happy growing 😊

Anthurium forgetii X Anthurium luxuriens is the next mountain to climb…. Have heard Forgetii hard, BUT - have seen your advice to a beginner in growing Anthuriums to try Luxuriens. AHA! Maybe I can do the hybrid…? Well, I shall try.
@plantgayforlife

Both are great anthuriums to grow! Forgetii slightly less hardy than luxurians but not difficult to grow

Hello 👋 I just bought a small Veitchii. I will be transitioning it to leca because I put most plants in that substrate. Can I ask how I would mimic the sphagnum moss mound on the base. Should a plant it with the base snuggle under the leca and then when it grows add a pot extender and add more leca? What do you think? This is my first Anthurium. I live in Melbourne Australia.
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife 16 дней назад
Don’t overthink it. Veitchii doesn’t need pampering. You can just use leca if you want

Love this video! Super helpful and informative! Do you have any suggestions on how to convert a soil anthurium (vittarifolium) to semi hydro? She's a big girl in an 8 inch pot and some of her leaves are 36 -40 inches long 😍
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife Год назад
Wow! That’s impressive! In my experience, converting a less aerated substrate to a more aerated substrate is much easier on aroid roots than the other way around. Meaning that trying to convert leca roots to soil can be tricky. But I find the odds are in my favor when converting soil roots to moss or leca, which is more aerated! HOWEVER, if you haven’t grown other anthuriums in semi hydro, I wouldn’t start out with your biggest and most prized plants. Start with plants that could easily be replaced if it doesn’t work the first time. With every hiccup or plant fail, I learn something invaluable. So by the time I got around to converting my high value aroids from soil to semi hydro, I did so confidently because I had already done it so many times with cheaper plants. Hope this was helpful! 😄

Subbed!💚 Would you recommend keeping sphagnum moss around the plants as a top dress?
@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife Год назад
thanks! sphag moss on top can actually be a good indicator for when to water since it will wick moisture from the substrate. So when it dries out you know to check the substrate to see if your anthurium needs a watering soon 😁

@plantgayforlife
@plantgayforlife Год назад
It honestly depends on what catches your eye since there's such a variety! Two visually contrasting species I would suggest are clarinervium (thick leaves make it hardier than other velvet species I grow), and luxurians (great glossy/bullate leaf but slow growing)

I haven’t grown that particular species so I couldn’t give specific care tips. Ask in an anthurium Facebook group like “Anthurium Addicts” and hopefully someone who has grown and cared for that species can help!
