it always amazes me the engineers couldn't allow an additional 1/8" clearance so that a normal size wrench could be used. I too have had to modify wrenches, shaking my head the entire time while doing it. Good information, thank you.
I standard needle nose pliers can easily move into that space to turn it loose. it is NOT a tight hard torque set. I have a pair of thin wire stripper...thin enough with teeth on the end. An easy and quick turn and it breaks loose. Of course if you are really hard up and don't have a slim needle nose set of pliers..then just bend a long nail across a 1/2 inch bolt. Slip the bend around the solenoid nut and they you go..you just made a wrench. (there are two flats in the solenoid nut!). See how easy it is to fab up your own tooling. No need to run down to the big box store looking for the impossible tool you will use one time. Roll your own, just like pawpaw did when he was building his house with his bar hands and digging foundations with a shovel. 🙂
I have checked several videos looking for how to fix Champion Power Generator Carburetor but the whole benefits were here in this Video ....thank you very much
Thanks for the information, at least you confirmed my assumption on its function and method. Mine is working fine at this point in time, but when I do the end of season maint, I will pull it and clean it up.
My solenoid felt warm and my mower would not crank. Knowing what it was gave me the courage to take my bowl off my snapper riding mower. It was just like he said. the carburetor cleaner worked just like he said. I clean the bowl, (in my case I did not have to take the solenoid off. It was mounted to the bottom of the bowl) cleaned and sprayed around the carburetor, etc., sprayed and sprayed the solenoid and finally got it to move, and put it all back together, and it works. Many Thanks.
Thanks for the info on the backfire preventer and how to get it off. I just cleaned a carb like that one and had to get that part off to get to the main jet and float valve. The mower belongs to my neighbor and he didn't put Sta-bil in his gas and it smelled awful. It runs like a top now. Thanks again.
Thanks! Poured some bad gas in the tank ($1.89 from 2 years ago) and had to remove and clean. Wasn't sure what these things were for. Took maybe 5 minutes to grind a 1/2" wrench down. Cleaned the carb, inserted 100% gas and back in biz. :D
Thank you for the very good information on what a solenoid is and why!!! I have never had a problem with one; so for some unknown reason to myself, I always thought it was a mysterious, absolutely ESSENTIAL part of the engine STARTING!! I HAD SO MUCH EGG ON MY FACE after hearing you say it had NOTHING to do with the inner workings of the engine! Thank you so much for bringing enlightenment to my life. I am 76-year-old female and I do all of my maintenance and minor repairs myself, but as I said, I never had a problem with the solenoid so I never had to check it out. Left me laughing at myself. Hope you have a blessed day! THANK YOU!!! I will be looking forward to more videos!
14 Karat gold test solution. And save yourself about 70 beans. Put a couple drops of the acid in each emulsion tube and bingo. Also will do wonders to the main jet. It cleans the brass jet and it will definitely look like new. You heard it from me first. I work on small engines just about every day. Cheers!!
I have a very old Gedore brand wrench that just fits . They were the cheap ones that came in those little blue metal holders . I have people try and argue with me a lot saying that solenoid causes flooding . I tell them it does not have anything to do with flooding and they still insist it is the solenoid causing it .
I appreciate the explanation of how the solenoid works. Excellent job! However, some folks don't have $70 maybe more today, to throw at a new carburetor. You said, "If it were yours, you would probably just clean it." When I repair a mower for someone, I always try saving them money.
Luckily for me i decided to keep a few of the little flat cheap wrenches that come with certain furniture that requires assembly.. i found out there's a 10mm and 1/2 inch atleast.. they work great in these situations
a good way to test it is hook wire back up now turn switch on allso gd solenoid to eng you should see the tiny plunger go up and down as you turn key on and off thats all it can do
My fuel shut-off solenoid valve has been non-functional for years to the point that my Kohler would not idle low not at high engine speed, it would pop fire. I removed the plunger; now the Kohler both idles and runs strong without pop.
A mechanic told me to saok the carb in brake fluid for 3 days, (after removing any gaskets and the float). I did this. Then washed it all, with fuel. Put it back on. Worked fine after that.
I did this yesterday and just used a pair of channel locks to remove the bowl, then I just unscrewed the solenoid by hand. Just unplug it before you loosen.
G'day mate. I had a problem with the fuel solenoid on my Husqcana ride-on mower and was able to get it working perfectly by removing the rubber tip (the part that actually seals and shuts off the fuel) of the solenoid and replacing it again. My question is... can I leave it like this forever? Is there any real need to have the fuel off when not using the mower? Maybe I am missing something as engines are not my forte' lol.
Could it be cleaned by letting it sit in a solution of detergent that will break down the fuel deposits? Hopefully a new carburetor will not be needed.
Hello sir I have an lx277 could not get it started .replaced the fuel solenoid. Still could not start it sprayed some carb cleaner in the carb got it to start ran a wire to the solenoid from the battery + and it ran fine. The hour meter is blank and the PTO will not work. I am thinking about replacing the circuit board. Do you have any suggestions Thanks Joe P
Someone don't care about other people's stuff and it's a shame that they don't have any common sense. I would have been like the rock in walking tall, your all fired 🤣 great share thank you
I enjoyed the video. What are your feelings/suggestions on the new Kawasaki EFI fuel system vs their traditional carburetor system. I'm thinking about going EFI on my next mower most likely with a Kawasaki FX850 engine.
EFI is way more efficient and better in every way . Coming from the automotive industry now working on a fleet of small engine type system EFI and EFI diagnostics is second nature to me. But for many small engine mechanics EFI must seem like witchcraft 😂😂
My solenoid wont stay IN the bowl. I screw it in all the way and its still loose then eventually popped out, threads on the solenoid look good, so it must be in the bowl, unless someone has a suggestion.
So what I'm hearing is I can just cut nub off to eliminate no fuel issue.. I tend to just shut fuel off on my generator and let run out of fuel in bowl
Just search for a bike cone wrench set. They make thin wrenches for adjusting bike wheel hubs. You can get shitty stamped ones that work fine for like 8$
My solenoid had minor damage from overheating at the electrical connection (a little melting). It is probably gummed up like the one in the video, leading to high resistance. My solenoid appears to be identical to the video part. I’m having problems finding a source for just the solenoid. Do you have any suggestions for where I could find this part? Hate to even consider buying the whole carb.
Hi sir, I'm responding to you about this solenoid there problem, Saturday mine started little bit hard on 3 cranks then fired up, but I was cutting grass and turned corner and tractor just died shut off and white smoke poured out from under hood, Dam, I seriously and furiously looked what wire melting, wasn't wire was Dam Solenoid almost caught fire. I cool engine down and pulled solenoid off looking at it omg it was free movement but black plastic melted to metal part there made with electrical coil inside and spring rubber gasket So I'm adding fuel shut off in line before fuel filter and looking for new part but there expensive mine 22 hp briggs 50.00 Too me there fire hazard waiting to happen
These solenoid should last forever. I don't see why they dont make these parts serviceable. I'm about to clean the solenoid out on my lawnmower. Hopefully everything goes well.
I'm kind of curious... if you shut the engine off and the solenoid is not functioning, I should think the odds of the carb flooding the engine would increase. If the needle valve for the float is gummed up, R&R on the solenoid would reduce the odds of flooding occurring, yes?
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 - I had seen that video, but what I don't understand (and my question) is where does the 12V DC come from to open the solenoid if there is no battery?
Yeah, not sure why you thought you'd get by with just a solenoid cleaning. If the solenoid is that bad then you gotta assume the jets and the needle is just as bad.
It's not quite as simple as turn on the key and see if you have power at the fuel solenoid wire or if the plunger retracts or extends. You need to make sure all your safety limit switches are happy. Or you will still have no power to the solenoid wire. Like the safety limit switch in the seat and clutch pedal. If the circuits not happy you won't have power.
I told a guy that the sol had nothing to do with engine flooding--He said a briggs factory mechanic said I was wrong .... I said you are wrong and mechanic should go back to school-- I have been working on small engines for over 60 years
I ordered a new carburetor for my Briggs & Stratton 22 horse V-Twin for 19 bucks $2 shipping and handling. The only modification I have to do is lengthen a ground wire to the solenoid. one guy wanted 150 bucks just to put a kit in my old carburetor. This ain't rocket science! The new carburetor works great!
Run some Seafoam thru that carb and you won't have all the gummed up crap to worry about. If you use Seafoam, you wouldn't be replacing or trying to fix your carbs anymore.
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 WTF? I've been using Seafoam for over 20 years now as do millions of people who swear by it. Why the negative comments about it? I don't really care what it's made of. I have never had to do rebuilds or clean my carbs since I started using it. It also makes a great fuel stabilizer for engine during long term storage. You are only fooling yourself by not trying it.
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 Not my opinion, it's fact. Seafoam has been around for a long time because it works. It keeps the tiny journals and jet openings clean on carbs, FACT. I works great as a fuel stabilizer during the long term storage periods, FACT. My lawn mowers, motorcycles, chainsaws, etc. all start up after long term storage with no problems. The reason people have to make those kind of videos about how to fix gummed up or dirty carb parts is because they DON'T use Seafoam. It's proven preventative maintenance that works, FACT.
"If it were mine Id would probably go ahead and clean it but its only 70.00 bucks for a OEM." PEOPLE JUST DONT CARE ITS NOT THEIR MONEY HUH? PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH SLICK.
1. WHY ARE THE ENGINEERS SO FN DUMB AND DONT LEAVE ENOUGH SPACE FOR EVEN THE THINEST WRENCH TO FIT IN THERE? STUPID! HIRE BETTER ENGINEERS CRAFTSMAN OTHER WISE YOUR TOOLS ARE USELESS AND I WONT BE BUYING THEM IF I CANT FIX THEM MYSELF. IM NOT PAYING A MECHANIC HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND LOSING MY MOWER FOR WEEKS PLUS TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM MECHANIC FOR A FN SOLENOID. THIS MOWER WAS $3600! 2. I HAD TO GRIND ONE OF MY WRENCHES DOWN AND THAT WORKED. 3. EVEN MY THINEST PLIERS DIDNT WORK 4. DO NOT BUY CRAFSTMAN. OTHER BRANDS DON’T DO THIS!
