Anti-insect LED lamp. (non zapping)

The eBay description of this was throwing in lots of totally irrelevant keywords for effect. That's a good result though, since I was actually searching for the LED lamps with the built-in bug zapper and found this intriguing lamp.

Yeah, "bug lights" are based on the (dubious?) idea that certain wavelengths of light are invisible to insects, and therefore bugs wouldn't be attracted to a lamp equipped with a bug light as opposed to one equipped with an ordinary wide-spectrum bulb.

Clive, edison screws always have neutral wired to the outer foil as long as you aren't using a bennett cap adapter. One of the only saving graces for that type of fitting. Polarized sockets saves lives, especially with modern LED lamps. It also saves cost on making them safe.

I've tried those yellow bug lights, both incandescent and fluorescent, which claim to not attract bugs. The verdict is that they very much do attract bugs every bit as much as a white light. Haven't tried LED yet but I imagine the result would be largely the same.

Interesting thing I found when I first installed LED's... We have our night light in the kitchen, which is next to a nice big glass sliding door. The CFLs would attract a veritable swarm of insects, honestly it was quite ridiculous some years... However, after I replaced it with an LED, it hardly attracted any insects. A few, sure, but not the swarm of Armageddon. I also ended up replacing that light with a LIFX smart bulb, so that the night light could be put on a schedule & auto dimmed down at night, further conserving power & (some) night vision for anybody getting up at night. I found that the LIFX did attract only sliiiightly more insects then the first LEDs I had used.... So, yeah, anyway... Just my observations. I live in Australia too.

Regarding the placement instructions 1 min in. It's saying not just the position but orientation. So above head height horizontal is okay, above head vertical is not. The difference between the celling location is the gap I think (can't see writing clearly enough to tell).

I bought a few of these a while back, and just now I modified one to use as a night light, powered from a USB powerbank. At a nice, low light level suitable for the middle of the night, it only draws ~30mA @ 5VDC (and that's with the overhead of the USB meter).

Have you checked if the screw of the lamp holder is connected to live or neutral? Or if it's not a UK plug, have you considered snipping the wire and putting a UK plug on it and connecting it the right way around for your own peace of mind?
@Lumibear.
@Lumibear. 7 лет назад
Was the idea that it provided an adequate light that doesn't attract insects, or that it repels them? From the mesh arrangement inside the bulb surround it could even possibly be meant to attract and entrap them, but I've a strong suspicion that it's just a pretty light, Clive, with one of those 'creative' verbose descriptions that we love so much.

I wonder how the insects will be affected by the cold white LED street lamps they're using in the uk now,? Will we see an increase in nighttime flying biting bugs?
@Chrisamic
@Chrisamic 5 лет назад
It's primarily an anti moth light, and it only works if the moths have alternative white lights to go to. If you put the yellow lights strategically where the people are and a white light some short distance away, all the moths will go to the white one and stay away from the people. If the only light is the yellow one the moths will still find it. Apparently they're not THAT blind to the longer wavelengths. I can't imagine moths are that much of a problem on the Isle o' Man, but here in Australia they can reach plague proportions. Anyone who's ever eaten moth with their BBQ sangers and coleslaw will know what I mean.

Is the 0.15 pf really so terrible? Since it is a leading pf it will help to correct the lagging pf on the power supply cables and reduce the load, I2R losses and voltage drop. Of course one lamp by itself will make no discernible difference but in the future when LED lamps become the norm......
@jort93z
@jort93z 7 лет назад
1:05 there is actually a small difference. on the top picture the bulb touches the ceiling while its hanging from the wall. i think they dont want you to put it up in a way that bulb touches an object directly while mounted.
@johnfrancisdoe1563

I wonder how much instantaneous current these capacitor ballasted lamps draw when you switch them on at the peak of the mains waveform. There's no current limiting resistors.
@stargazer7644
@stargazer7644 5 лет назад
That's what the 2 x 75 ohm resistors are for - to limit inrush current. The math says it would draw a peak of about 10 amps for a couple of dozen microseconds. In reality, it would probably be less because for such a short rise time the inductance of the wires would be important, and I don't have a value for that.

i have stock full of incandescent versions of those in a drawer as much as i like led's... colder temps the leds wouldn't like much like in winter when fixtures idle for the season as in never used since i dont want to climb up there and pull them out and swap with regular ones since there added lights on side of the garage mainly for summer activities mainly and as i fear the temp extremes would ruin them faster heck inside the old 50's garage we still use incandescent's in there big 150watt ones

I'm at a loss here. . . . . Out in my yard, there are two 35W SOX lamps (lovely, classic sodium yellow), and yet, as it starts to get dark and lamps turn on, there are all manner of flying beasties the congregate around the lamps, and among them are midgies and mosquitoes - how come? If the yellow is supposed to repel them, or if they're supposed to be unable to see that part of the spectrum. Also, why is it that it's when the sun begins to set, or rise, and its light is yellow in appearance, the mozzies come out for a feed?

tin2001 they also see infra red. uv is used for most lunar seeking insects because you get infra red for free with waist heat. co2 is much more attractive to mosquitoes though infra red is how they see where to bite. may blind them or just be bad.
@awo1fman
@awo1fman 7 лет назад
Bug zapper lights use UV to attract insects, including mosquitoes. Since those work very well, you are very wrong. In my experience, bug zappers are best used where there is not a long distance surrounding line of sight, because you end up with more mosquitoes in your vicinity than without. Even though they end up in the zapper, they often have lunch first. I had a bug zapper mounted high on a deck at the top of a hill. I stopped using it when I realized I could easily see the light at night driving down a street a couple of blocks away. I had much fewer moths and mosquitoes after that. They work great in a more confined area, though. Also, CO2 may help them home in once they are in the near vicinity but it's much less detectable from a distance than a light. It also gets carried away quickly by breezes, which again is not an issue with light. Those CO2-based mosquito traps are very effective when used properly, but as with the zappers you have to use the right tool for the conditions.

It's not correct to say it's not efficient. Actually the energy efficiency of this cap dropper is over 90% but it has low power factor, which doesn't mean that any energy is lost as heat. And as long as the private mains customers are not paying the reactive energy there is no problem. But using phosphor coated blue LED's is awful! The UV part of the blue LED's is going through the phosphor and attracts insects as crazy.

Any LED lamp like this is going to have 100Hz flicker, I wouldn't have thought that would be good for soothing eye strain. Having said that, this one doesn't look bad at all for flicker, maybe because it is so low power. For my eyes, I find the old incandescent 20-30W tungsten lamp to be pretty good. Nothing to do with this Clive but I wonder if - as a LED guru - you can explain this odd phenomena. Cooker hood with two G4 halogen 20w bulbs. thought I'd replace with G4 LED replacements. One LED and one Halogen works OK. but replacing both Halogen for LED and they barely glow. Ive tried various combinations and several different makes of G4 LED. Neer as I can tell the Halogen is from a 12 volt transformer half wave rectified. I'm baffled. Cheers

+Hugh Haddow It sounds like what happens when you use a low load on an electronic halogen transformer.

Thanks for your quick response Clive, you are a gentleman sir. I thought since my meter indicated 13.5 Vac and 12Vdc it was a simple (potted) transformer.. The result of too little knowledge and too much stupidity. Bugger - a new power supply then. Great channel please keep going.

SilentS I love how it's "the Irish" you never get "the blacks" or "the Korean" but always "the Irish"

Because it's referring to a nationality. The Irish, the Koreans, the Americans, the Russians, the Belgians, the Italians......
