Great informative video Max. I used Center Gravity last year to set up my 981 GT4 and I was lucky that I had both Chris and Pete's input on the set up I eventually left there with. They absolutely transformed my car and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending them to anyone with any make of car, not just Porsche owners. Chris spent 6 hours on my GT4 and it was well worth the £600 it cost me. That cost included the cost of the 16mm shims (8mm each side on the front to widen the front track which were £100 for the shims). Definitely well worth the money and the investment if you enjoy driving your.
In the US we also have our fair share of shit roads too. Bituminous asphaltic concrete pavement is derived from oil and material admixtures and is expensive, due to high energy costs. Roads don't receive the attention they need from bad local management of funds and priorities. I own a 2nd gen Cayman S and opted for the standard suspension after testing a Cayman equipped with the PASM and I found it to be too soft or too stiff. The standard suspension proved to work well for me on the roads I would be having to use most of the time. I'm in Florida and I'm sure in the northern US the soft side of PASM would be the prudent way to go due to frost heaving winters. Good choice on the changes you're having done by someone who knows what their doing.
Well done Max. Another great video with Pete at Center Gravity. Super informative. I was talking to him last week and said he should do more of these types of videos as few people talk about real-world setups - and he’s great at explaining. Everyone wants “fast road” or “track” without understanding what it actually means. 👍
I miss my GT4...sort of. I wish I loosened the rear bar to address the last bit of rear end harshness over bumps (from one of the earlier Max Rev videos fixing alignment on the old Cayman) that I couldn't dial out via DSC controller.
I have so many questions. I’ve gone from a Cayman R with Ohlins to a 997 4S with PASM. The R handled like a dream, but was very firm. The 4S PASM in soft mode is great, but hard mode doesn’t seem to improve handling, just make it hard. I want to lower the car, options keep PASM and get lower springs, or change to coilovers. Will lower springs with roll bars make handling better, all be it loose some comfort. Also, can you alter the camber on an all wheel drive system?
Lots of questions you’re right! Not entirely sure what “good handling” means to you? Less body roll on fast corners on smooth tarmac? Lowering the car would help if this is your optimisation goal. However if you have bumpy poorly surfaced roads you want more damper travel for comfort and that could mean raising the car, which gives more body roll on fast corners. I’ve only got to my current position by trial and error… wish you luck👍🏼
Another option is to see if you can get a "DSC" controller, in order to adjust the PASM settings. I had one for my 981 GT4 and it has the potential to change the damping characteristics drastically. I went from wanting to sell the car the first week I had it because it was too "harsh", to buying stiffer springs...and I had no real intent to drive on track.
Yes been looking at these. The DSC may not have as a dramatic effect on the 4S, as a GT4 will already have a more focused suspension setup. The 4S has had new Bilstein shocks on the front, so will try Eibach lowering springs and the DSC box and keep the PASM for now. @@colnagog6026
