At Amen Clinics-one of the world leaders in applying brain imaging science to help people with emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and learning issues-calls from people experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts are way up.
According to a new poll, 45% of Americans say the coronavirus pandemic is impacting their mental health. This is evidenced by the increased use of antidepressant medications during the lockdown. According to a recent report, the number of new prescriptions for antidepressants filled during the pandemic jumped by nearly 19%. This isn’t surprising considering the pandemic is ramping up stress, worry, and isolation. All of this can trigger your vulnerabilities. But before you call your doctor and ask for antidepressants, you need to get the facts about these drugs.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are one of the most commonly prescribed types of antidepressants, and they come with a laundry list of side effects, including sexual dysfunction, insomnia, headaches, and nausea. They also carry a black box warning, meaning they pose the most serious and dangerous potential side effects, such as suicidal thoughts. In addition, once you start taking SSRIs, it can be very hard to stop.
The good news is, there are alternatives to antidepressants.

Took meds since i was a child. At 28, i became suicidal. I stopped taking all the meds 33 years ago. I still have very high highs and very low lows, but working through them without meds. Tons of B vitamins. Moderate daily exercise. Consistent sleep hygiene. Removed all negative people, places and things. Developed a spiritual connection with my Higher Power. Journaling. I feel for everyone struggling with mental health. Love yourself and believe in yourself. You are stronger than you know, but treat yourself gently. God bless

Most doctors want to help people. They just do it in the manners that they know. It's the same with psychiatrists with antipsychotics in schizophrenia. They think they're helping people even if they're only slapping a bandaid on it, and in the case of antipsychotics, a very unpleasant bandaid.

A Non - Prescription for Depression. A long time ago, a college professor asked me for suggestion to help his adult daughter who was depressed. I hared with him something Edgar Cayce suggested to a woman he was talking to going through the same thing. He told her 1. to draw closer to God and God will draw closer to you. #2. Go and help those who are less fortunate then you and you'll see just how blessed you are. Also you'll feel good about helping them feel better in their time of need. I agree with him as I've volunteered a few times myself and one time an an elderly homeless woman made a point to stop me as I was serving food to say thank you and how grateful she was we were there to help. So the professor said that he could not wait to tell his daughter the suggestion. He did and she did start volunteering and it helped lifted her spirits.

It's 2024 and this vid just showed up in my feed. Bumped into my neighbor last night. She was wondering why she hadn't called lately. I told her that I can't find anything upbeat to talk about. I'm not suicidal but I'm tired and really want it all to be over ( I didn't tell her that). I had to euthanize my 17 year cat two months ago. She was such a good companion and I suppose she gave me a reason to keep going. I'm not obese; I eat a lot of organic salads, I walk everywhere, I refuse to take ANY meds, my D levels are good and I've never owned a TV. I'm 65 and I've had struggles with depression since I was a child. Thank you.

@@Esho2023 well instead of stopping, I decided to take my 20 mg dose every other day (equivalent to 10mg per day) to see if that helped. I’ve been doing that for about 6 weeks and it’s helped for sure. I haven’t totally gone off it yet. As far as emotional numbness goes, it’s basically like I could get zero enjoyment out of things. No excitement for life. I think Prozac’s problem is that it has an extremely long half life (4-7 days) therefore it continuously builds in your system. I want to get off it completely but Prozac has helped me so much with my social anxiety, especially with my professional career.

What I’ve learned from my iatrogenic injury caused by psych meds and medical negligence is that deficiencies in minerals, vitamins, hormones imbalances, and a toxic environment (physical and social) cause health issues that are misdiagnosed as mood disorders or mental illness, when in reality we may just be deficient in something and/or surrounded by a very toxic environment. I was perfectly healthy and fit over two years ago, and suddenly started having panic attacks, so after few tests (non thorough or enough testing) my doc put me on a benzo and on a trial and error of ssris, and finally a super toxic atypical antidepressant that have caused me tons of health issues I never had before. I probably had a mineral/vitamin deficiency, and they didn’t caught it. My issue could have been solved naturally, but instead, I was given toxic poison that almost killed me. Do deep research before accepting any type of treatment...it will save your life!

Love your work Dr. Amen; thank you! To all out there, even in your 20's. Please have your thyroid checked when you go to your doctor for depression and anxiety. In the mental health clinic I worked at, 20 percent of patient were severely hypothyroid when they came in. Some were women in the early/mid 20's and please don't let your doc talk you out of doing a thyroid panel.

This is why I like him, he's not just prescribing antidepressants to people, which I feel is one of the main problems with psychiatry is that you go to a psychiatrist or psychologist, and they automatically say: "put them on antidepressants" antidepressants are one of the worst things to put someone on IMO especially teenagers why the hell would you give a teenager a developing mind, antidepressants? NOT good idea. Usually when teenagers suffer from depression, more often than not it's because of some kind of trauma NOT a chemical imbalance within the brain.

Never mind the Opioid epidemic ( and the aftermath of trying to hold those most responsible for flooding the market and over prescribing ) what about the antidepressants epidemic and catchall use for everything? This topic wells up, trends awhile disappears again and like so much in " Healthcare " it's just ' business as usual', no cures just return customers for life... Just say no to drugs unless of course they are from pharmaceutical companies, reputable doctors and the complete, broken industry of Medical 💅 care.

Thank you for sharing this information. I know from experience that if you are having mood swings or depression, your PCP should refer you to a psychiatrist and start counseling and get to the root of the depression instead of putting a bandaid on the symptom. I was diagnosed with bi-polar 20 years ago and I am still in counseling for maintenance on my mental wellbeing and my medication dosage has changed as my bipolar improved and my dosage level is very low compared to the beginning. It is important to stay in therapy while on your prescribed medications. I have been the happiest for the past 15 years since my meds have leveled and am now in maintenance.

Honesty from the medical field is rare in my opinion, where most doctors are self serving and writing scripts for that bonus $$.

Not always true, bipolar disorder II or unipolar depression or bipolar I with manic cycling is a CHEMICAL imbalance and responds well to mood stabilizers and anti depressants...yes good food, exercise and good sleep, supplements/vitamins, avoidance of all drugs and inflammatory substances are essential...but sometimes drugs ARE necessary to stabilize mood and behavior harmful to the person or others
@kadagirl1

I’m so sorry that’s what you think. Sadly you’re wrong. It can be more of an imbalance whether mineral or vitamin or chemical. There is reactive depression and a brain unbalance depression.

@@kadagirl1 Yes, and also trauma in life can lead to depression and anxiety and be quite debilitating. This can be from repeated incidences of childhood abuse, domestic violence, rape, combat, etc. When the brain has been hijacked by traumatic events, it's not so easy to just put on a happy face and get over it. What's needed is work with a knowledgeable practitioner and all of the other treatments Dr Amen recommends here (diet, exercise, supplements, etc).
