First, I would like to dedicate this video to the loving memory of my beautiful mother, Ofelia Diaz-Fontana, who was my best friend and constant travel companion before sadly passing away on Mother's Day 2019. Over her lifetime, and the majority of mine, we returned together year after year to Antigua, Guatemala and the country of her birth. There, we created the most precious and endearing memories with one another that I will never forget and always cherish for as long as I live.
In this video, I introduce Antigua Guatemala to my wife for the first time and to all this romantic Spanish colonial city has to offer. On the one hand, it was hard to walk through the house knowing that my mother was no longer there to say good morning or to have a coffee with me in the garden or an evening cognac in the inner courtyard while listening to some Bosa Nova under the stars and volcanos. On the other hand, I knew she was looking down from heaven with a smile knowing that I was creating new and beautiful memories with my wife Monica that we would both cherish together for the rest of our lives.
With that said, my hope is that you too will fall in love with the beauty and romantic charm of Antigua which has brought to me so many cherished memories over the years. Together, we will get lost (in a good way) down her romantic cobblestone streets as we pass a kaleidoscope of colorful doors and walls that are so characteristic of this UNESCO world heritage site. We will introduce you to Antigua's sprawling food market and cook up a delicious caldo de res. We will visit a variety of historical sites worth discovering and take you to a few of my favorite restaurants and drinking spots that you won't find in any common tourist guide. We will climb to the Cerro de La Cruz for a bird's eye view of Antigua and finally, we will visit the hotel Santo Domingo for a day of pampering and take you to the mountain village of Hobbitenango, an eco hotel just outside of Antigua where you will think you just walked onto the movie set of the Lord of the Rings.
By the end of the video, it is my wish that you fall in love, as I have, with this beautiful Spanish colonial city and hopefully one day allow me to be your guide on a trip of your own to visit La Antigua, Guatemala...
