Antikythera Island. Apolytares Lighthouse is a historic landmark mostly know for the Lighthouse keeper Nikolaos Philosophof the Russian Navy Admiral who lived there from 1926-1933 as the Lighthouse keeper, after a glorious past at the Russian Navy ended by the Bolshevik revolution.
The location is stunning at the ends south of the island and the rocky road very difficult to drive. The lighthouse itself is in a very bad condition and needs renovation now. I arrived at the location at 8:00 pm for the sunset. This was my second attempt to reach the area (2018 was impossible for me to reach as I had a few hours in the island and a dark windy and raining conditions and a path to walk). This year I arrived at the island 7:00pm on the 16th August and after an hour of driving my car, I was at the location sunset time. I was lucky enough to have with me two other visitors Panagioti and Konstantino (we meet on the road), who helped me overcome the difficulties of the rocky road (opened 2021). I stayed over night for the St. Myronas celebration 16th August at Galaniana village, slept in the car for three hours and very early in the morning the next day the 17th, I continued the shooting, sunrise time. I wanted to show sunrise and sunset and see which one is best. I left the island the same day.
The celebration of St. Myronas was beautiful and very traditional and the locals very friendly. Thank you for your hospitality.
It was an adventure, very rewarding. I now have the experience and great footage.
For filming I used a DJI Mavic 3.
