This is my new favorite RU-vid series! I used to work at the American National Portrait Gallery, so I very much appreciate your fine use of portraits. But even more, I take this series as an excellent model for any series of videos featuring items from a collection. You say enough and not too much. You keep the presentation Human and accessible, but accurate and professional. It is an admirable balance. I hope to emulate your work one day, when I know far more about the collection of which I have recently become director.

I believe the moveable indicator on the barometer was used to record the current pressure so it could be more easily seen, say, 30 minutes later whether the pressure was rising or falling, which is more indicative of a forecast than the current absolute pressure level.

The William Wales expedition to Hudson’s Bay for the 1769 transit of Venus over wintered 68/69 at, then observed the transit the next spring from, Fort Prince of Wales, a Hudson Bay Company fur trade fort. Some of the fortifications remain across the Churchill River from the town of Churchill, Manitoba. One artifact from the expedition that was found at the Fort was a large stone multi-faced sundial made presumably by William Wales. It is on display at the Parks Canada Museum in Churchill. I think they also have a sextant but I’m not sure if it was from the actual expedition or just one similar to what Wales might have used. One presumes all the instruments would have been brought back to London. The expedition was successful in their observation.

Archival is such a huge undertaking. Imagine having that hefty book and knowing which page and which line has to do exactly with a Ramsden Barometer!
@RollaArtis
@RollaArtis 3 года назад
The massive instrument behind Ramsden's portrait (and the print of the same) was made in order to measure the apparent positions of astronomical objects. This remains in Palermo observatory alongside several other fine instruments from the same period, including Troughton's equatorial telescope and an astronomical clock by Cumming & Grant.

pretty coool that everything is logged on paper. nowadays, with all out electronics, at some point in time, everything will be lost. we should at least print the most important stuff ! hehe
@mfbfreak
@mfbfreak 3 года назад
Quite some stuff is being stored on digital photographic film in the permafrost seed vaults. The film with its plastic base should last for centuries. I think they started with putting the complete github contents in the vaults. Paper has the benefit of containing information that can be interpreted mostly without technology, but it is not necessarily more reliable than digital storage. HDDs are hermetically sealed these days, so even if you leave them out in the weather, if you really want you can retrieve the data that is mostly unharmed on the platters. Leave paper in a damp cellar for a century and it's completely gone. The HDD's electronics won't work, but you can take out the platter and use professional equipment to read it out. If the information is world-shakingly important, the professionals sometimes even use electron microscopes to figure it out.

The precision on that protractor is from beyond this planet! The upper moving part moves along the center piece with less dan 0,1 mm. All way around. Wow.
@RolandHutchinson
@RolandHutchinson 2 года назад
The main scale reads to 1/2 degree, and the vernier lets you measure to the nearest minute (1/60 degree). Not too shabby!

@WhatAboutTheBee
@WhatAboutTheBee Год назад
@@DavidLindes 289°39' is what I read. It is the smallest pinch off of 38', but could arguably been that. For curiosity and amusement, I happen to posses a Circle of Reflection. There are two verniers, mounted on an arm that bisects the circle of arc. In use, the two readings are averaged, providing a measurement to 5". The arm removes centering error, making the Circle of Reflection a highly accurate measurement tool.

It's funny, painters would work in exactly the same way back in the day, one master and multiple apprentices who will take care of the grindy tasks. I guess this was the common business model before big normalised schools like we have today.

In the R. S. council minutes, one of the members listed is Dr. Franklin. Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia was in England in 1768. Was he a R. S. council member and was he at this meeting?

Good spot! I bet you're right: he was certainly a member of the Society and published in the Proceedings, and he was widely known as Dr Franklin at the time because he'd received honorary doctorates from St Andrew's and Oxford. Surely Keith will be able to confirm it for us.

@@renerpho 1/60th, I believe. The divisions on the main dial are ½ degrees, and then the vernier goes 0-15 on one side, and 15-30 on the other... so, 0 or 30 minutes from the main dial location, plus 0-29 additional minutes from the vernier.

It's a shame they took the mercury out of the barometer, rendering it non-functional. Liquid mercury is not really dangerous so long as it isn't boiled or spilled into an aquatic environment.
