21:14? Tufting, possibly. I wonder if the ivory pieces came with the box originally. You've got quite a variety there. From antique buttons & threads & needles to baby clothes snaps & buttons to coat buttons from the 40s or 50s to everyday shirt buttons & sock darning stuff to embroidery things - all of which are interesting BUT...BUT...when you opened the box I spied immediately those blue rhinestone buttons & couldn't WAIT to see them!! Wow wow wow. How gorgeous a dress or blouse would THAT have been to be adorned with buttons like that on it?! I'm not a seamtress either but I have a collection of these kinds of old sewing items too, even an antique sewing machine that came with all of it's original paperwork & parts in the original wooden cabinet JUST because it's such a work of art & workmanship just for what it IS. I think the old adorned buttons are just as beautiful as any piece of jewelry you could wear & it's a shame they're no longer in fashion in any real way. Oh, you goofball - the googly 👀 buttons are for stuffed animals. 😁

I have an inkling that the ivory/bone pieces may have been original to the box. Yes, those green rhinestone buttons were my favorite buttons. They were so heavy too! They don't make buttons like these anymore. I wish I knew how to sew. You are lucky to have that old sewing machine. I wish I knew how to operate a sewing machine. My mom had one when I was a kid, but I do not remember her ever using it, lol. The googly eyes were cute. I guess this lady made stuffed animals too 😁👍

Hi Jane. Thanks for your reply. I'm a bit of a dummy. Can you explain what items were used for weaving and what kind of weaving? Is this what you are referring to? www.rubylane.com/item/753505-2019-363/Vintage-Bone-Tatting-Shuttle?search=1 Thanks so much.

I am not sure how long they lasted, or if they still make buttons today, but the T W & W Paris backmark has been around at least back to the Civil War. I have books on military buttons with backmarks. I will try to look when I get a chance.

Oh thank you so much!! When I was doing some googling on the TW&W buttons I saw that that company went way back to the Civil War. I had no idea that a French company made Military buttons for other countries. I am not fully sure that the other button was Spanish. Maybe in your book you will find out if it is not Spanish. I am interested in what you may find. Thank you so much!!

Most Union buttons were made by American manufacturers. Some Confederate officer buttons in particular were made in London and Paris. The key to dating a lot of buttons is the way the backmark looks. Circles around it, positioning of punctuation, spelling, etc, as manufacturers changed their marks even in short time spans. You may already know this. I will let you know if I see anything helpful. Yours is not US military - don't know about foreign, but backmark could still help with dating.

@@danwoodliefphotography871 Thanks for that info. It is very helpful. I do know the one marked "GC is Spanish and the GC stands for Guardia Civil. I saw a bunch identical to this one and people selling it said "Spanish American War". The other one is all metal and has script with a crown above it. Too bad the shank is broken on it. I am thinking it might be Spanish too, but I could be wrong.

@@FuturesPast1 I looked up the backmark for the Guardia Civil button. You already know what the T W & W means. My book on military buttons backmarks (American) says that H.M. was added in 1864, meaning Hartzog, Marchand, and Cie when they joined businesses. The authors say the joint business lasted from 1865 to 1902. On a side note, I bought this great book from the authors at a Civil War collectors show 15 years ago in Richmond.

@@danwoodliefphotography871 That is interesting info. So a date can be narrowed down from 1864/65-1902. My guess is I wouldn't be lucky enough to have the earlier date. Thanks so much. Now I will be on the hunt for more of these cool buttons 👍🤗
