Video of the process of restoring the Gunto from the world war 2
This is one of the most challenging and exciting projects we've ever worked on.
This is a sword that has too many interesting things.
After researching, it's not a "gunto" blade as I initially thought. (Shin Gunto Army Sword is the line of swords for officers) and this is a civilian katana with a military brown leather sheath over Saya for service/combat during World War 2.
Cases like this have happened a lot, on foreign forums there are also a few owners, but the number is small. Text on Tang Sword: Mimasaka no kuni Katsuyama ju Katsushige kore o saku.美作国勝山住勝茂作之 _ Mimasaka Province. This is the work of Katsuyama Katsushige.
Katsushige is from the Manji period (1658-1661) after Meireki and before Kanbun. This period spanned the years from July 1658 to April 1661. The reigning emperor was Go-Sai-tennō.
Because the old samegawa and ito have all rotted, the wooden handle is also cracked and the previous user also added a rather thick leather seppa piece. When restoring, I will not keep this piece, so the core will go deeper. The old pin hole must be filled and a new hole drilled to better fit the blade.
The accessories I also removed and replaced most of them with the correct ones from nihonto, not from Gunto. Keep only old Tsuba and seppas.
After washing, patina again, the golden details of Tsuba have appeared more clearly. Replace the new stingray skin for the handle. Menuki and the old Japanese dragon Fuchi set with the same theme are selected for this version.
Finally, a set of ito and sageo high quality silk kincha in shiny gold.
It is revealed that the accessory set for this sword has a very high value, up to tens of millions of dong!!
Wrapped in Tsumami style made by VietNam- Tsukamaki.
The old leather case was also restored and colored to its original color thanks to the enchanted Tran Workshop leatherwork's hands
Although the clip is short, the whole process lasted for nearly 2 months.
After finishing lacquer coating and drying the handle, the sword was returned to its original owner ^^

Always glad to see your videos! I wish I had 10% of your skill! I'm in Japan and have a gunto that needs a new tsuka too, just not the skill to do it.

Does this impact the value of an antique sword?

Why wasn't the original Saya kept, it had it's history in it's appearance.

Hello! I would like to ask what material do you make triangles from, what do you put under the tsukaito. Another second question, how do you lubricate the cord? glue? it just looks like wax in appearance.

They are nearly always some type of paper folded tightly. I've seen pressed wood looking ones, however I think those are the "cheaper" style. You can make a long roll of paper and then cut out the triangles rather quickly. Also, that's not lube. You don't want ito to move at all over time. Kusune is a pine resin pitch that builders use to make the underside of the ito tacky.

where do you usually find these antiqued things for restoration? would you convert a katana blade in to a different kind of sword if you find 1 with a missing hilt and scabbard
