Thank you, Sir. As a senior woman I love installing casters on cabinets and chairs. That enables me to move my furniture around for cleaning, painting, rearranging, etc. without bothering anyone else for help. I noticed those plastic inserts in the hardware store recently and was wondering about their intended use. I appreciate your instructions for I have an old wooden office chair and a wheel keeps falling out. Now I know how to fix that.

Thank you! One of the legs broke on my very comfortable old swivel office chair. I have the base off and can now go on the hunt for a replacement base. As soon as you pointed out the screw in the "bell", I began to smile.

Excellent video. I just inherited a vintage bankers chair just like the one in your video except the center post is a slide type not threaded. I need to replace the casters and the thrust bearing. You covered everything I need to do to put this chair back into tip top shape. Thank you so much.

Hey I just completed the repair method using the 1" large dowel and it seems to work! Thanks for your help! To get a true small hole I set a (maybe 2 feet square ) piece of plywood on all four legs (with base upside down )to make a false 'floor' upon which I could rest a drill guide that can drill a true perpendicular hole (the one you warned about). This guide method seems to work pretty well. Great guide!

Great video. I'm hoping you can please help me. I have one of these old wood chairs. I love them. Classic design. But mine just tilts too far forward. The spring to adjust the backward tilt is fine, but it tilts forward so that the front is about 1 or 1.5 inches below level. I keep sliding off it. Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

Hi! This is so good! I have a 1975 Chromcraft office chair that I cannot adjust the height on. The post is within a stainless steel tube, so I can't see what is going on. Is there a way for this great guy to do virtual troubleshooting? Thanks so much.

My Hillcrest chair looks similar but had some kind of ball bearing which broke and scatter balls everywhere. I don't know where it was fitted or what size to get. It didn't have a hub liner. Was the bearing instead of this? Please help.
@swivelchairparts
@swivelchairparts 3 года назад
Hi Jules, To best of my knowledge ball bearing mechanisms are not being made for past 60+ years. Sounds like our model SKU 10 is what you need to adapt to your chair seat. Note that the threaded post is 1". Don SCP

Thank you very much for this excellent video! My chair uses the very same mechanism. The problem I have is that the chair seat leans forward instead of staying level. I tightened the knob at the back as hard as I could but it made no difference. Perhaps I could use a wrench to tighten even more? I'm just not sure whether that has anything to do. Any advice on that?

I'm missing something about this video. I have a chair with a mechanism exactly like the one in this video. Tightening the screw in the bell locks the bell to the upper lip on the hub and would prevent the bell from rotating with respect to the hub but the threaded post is not locked and can still rotate within the lower assembly and ends up lowering the chair over time. How do I fix this? There is a thrust washer present with tab in the post slot. There is a hub liner. Many thanks for any suggestions.
@swivelchairparts
@swivelchairparts Год назад
Tightening should not lock the bell. Loosen it up slightly. The chair lowers and raises because the THRUST WASHER tab is broken, missing or not engaging. The tab should lock into the post.
@richardoliver4911
@richardoliver4911 Год назад
@@swivelchairparts So if I understand correctly, the screw is just used to connect the chair to its base. It should just engage the upper lip of the hub in order to keep the chair together. The thrust washer on my chair is there, not broken, engaged in the slot. The tab is locked in the post. I'll try loosening the screw in the bell and see if that helps. Many thanks.

I have a W H Gunlocke antique office chair. The sticker on it says 682. The chair sits crooked. I took it all apart and decided that there are many worn places. I would like to replace the hardware. Do you have a source?

@swivelchairparts
@swivelchairparts Год назад
If the noise is coming from the mechanism, it's probably because metal is rubbing against metal. That means the mechanism metal is worn out (away). And you can't replace missing metal. Lubricants are only temporary fixes. Don SCP

Great - so thorough. But it looks like it's going to cost way more than the chair to upgrade all those parts. I for sure need the new machanism, because the weld broke, and the chair is tilting side to side and all the way front and back. I'll find your phone number. (Maybe I can get it welded if I can get all the parts off?)

Isn't that the way it is with antiques? It costs more to fix than to buy something new.
