I have primed a few of them with kilz but to be honest it didn't seem to make much difference. I use acrylics and I know the paint would stick a lot better if it were oil based. After it's done I spray it with a heavy coat of varnish and that helps but it will still scratch or you try hard enough. I just let the buyer know to be careful with it.

Sorry for the late response, I've been away from my channel for a while.I always use Kiltz. I don't think acrylic would stick very well without it.

I used a few coats of Kitz primer before I started and a spray on acrylic sealer when it was done. Also, I learned the hard way that if you use a hair dryer to dry between layers you should let the metal cool down before you continue to paint. When it is warm the paint dries almost instantly. Other than that it's not much different than painting on canvas. Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll do fine.

I used kilz primer before and Kyrlon archival UV protection gloss spray after. You can get both at Walmart or Home Depot.

I just cleaned the surface really well with alcohol and primed it with a few coats of gesso. There was enough texture from the rust that it took really well.

Kitz primer usually.
