My husband has brought home 3 rusty saws. I’ve been making jewelry and painting for a while, but the thought of doing landscapes on a saw is daunting…. I really appreciate your videos!!!
Thank You. I love acrylics. Rather than blending on the canvas like you would with oil paint, I use a lot of thin, transparent layers to blend, more like what you would see with watercolors.
VERY NICE ,IVE PAINTED 40 OR 50 SAWS OF ALL SIZES OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS AND ITS NICE SEEING SOMEONE ELSES TAKE ON THE OLD SAWS ,IT GIVES THEM A SECOND LIFE ,,WELL DONE
Thanks for watching! I will be making more step by step instructional videos regularly as well. Please check those out. They are much easier to follow.
I have just posted a few more videos. I took a break to get my studio set up. I plan to be posing regularly from now on. Thanks for asking, I'm sorry it took me so long to reply.
I have been commissioned to paint a saw blade that has been sand blasted. do you think i should still prime it with kiltz? (I kind of liked the idea of some metal showing through) thanks!
Thank you! Sorry for the late response, I've been away from my channel for a while. New videos are up now, and more should be coming on a regular basis going forward.
Sorry for the late response, I've been away from my channel for a while. I have a better setup now and will be doing more instructional stuff. Thanks for watching!

Hello it's Robbie Arnold again..just one rather big thing, I love your fog, did you use gel and zinc white and then wipe with a soft cloth. Thanking you , if you can help. I have painted most of my life. But never fog, and it gives a marvelous effect to your art.
I just use white Gesso and lots of water. Put it on really thin and then wipe with a dry paper towel. It takes a few layers sometimes, drying between applications, depending on how foggy you want it to be. Also make sure the painting is completely dry before you start or it could reactivate the paint underneath.
Hey Ben, great job! The only possible reason you didn't get more likes is because search engines didn't find this. This just showed-up for me today :-) Keep up the good work.
Just picked up this same type of saw from an antique shop. Lookin forward to painting a nice scene onto it. Beautiful job on your painting! Any tips before I start painting it?
I used a few coats of Kitz primer before I started and a spray on acrylic sealer when it was done. Also, I learned the hard way that if you use a hair dryer to dry between layers you should let the metal cool down before you continue to paint. When it is warm the paint dries almost instantly. Other than that it's not much different than painting on canvas. Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll do fine.
You posted on my wife’s post on gurney page so I checked you out n was already subed lol you do amazing work but just picked up a saw blade imma try painting it soon thanks for sharing
Thanks and best of luck on the saw. Painting acrylic on metal definitely presents it's own set of challenges. If you use a hair dryer to dry the layers be sure to let it cool before you continue. If the metal is warm when the paint hits it it will dry almost immediately.
Ben, you are totally awesome! I had to fast forward to the end because I became so inquisitive to see the finished product. What attention to detail to add highlights to water drops and rain in a window pane. How incredible is this painting. So glad you’re the patient and caring teacher that you are. God has blessed you with an amazing talent.
I want to do something similar. What should I use to prep the saw before going in with acrylic? Also do you put a sealant to protect the acrylic? If so could you list the brands and the order in which you used them? Thankyou!
I've been wanting to try painting a couple old saw blades my husband has, but he says I need to sand them down to bare metal, otherwise the rust will bleed through. I'm curious what prep you do to get your blade ready for paint.
Beautiful!!! Can I ask what you used for your base coat on the saw...I have one that has rust on it...is there something to coat it with first? thank you!!
I have done a few. I used kilz primer, about 3 coats on most of them. However, on a few I just wiped it with alcohol and painted strait on the rust. I like the way the paint flows over the texture of the rust but, like you, I was concerned about the long term adhesion. It is probably best to prime it first. Either way it is always possible to scratch the paint off when it's dry if you're not carefully. Nothing I have found is perfect.
@@BenCollinsArt thank you! I will use primer on it then paint with acrylics...did you spray it will acrylic varnish to keep it from getting any damage? would the Workable Fixatif...by krylon work once the paint is cured? I use it on most of my canvas paintings!
Thank you for watching. I am currently building a new studio space so I can post more often. I plan to have several more instructional videos explaining some of these techniques next year.
