i use both avast antivirus and malwarebytes anti-malware they both pick up different files i may run avast and find nothing then run malwarebytes and it finds malious threats or vice verser its not too bad i guess but would be better to have one program that does it all in one scan its alot of time to run 2 seperate scans

Avast and Malwarebyte. Back when AVG didnt have auto updates and when I was a noob at computers I got a virus and the rest is history. Got Avast and been happy. I also run anti exploit to. (I keep avast running all time use Malwarebyte when downloading and use anti exploit when surfing web (not youtube) and it works quite nicely)

ProtoMario I tried Kaspersky Internet Security once, the 30-day trial, it has both antivirus and anti-malware in one software, quite demanding for old PCs but for newer ones in the market, that software is no problem (EXCEPT MAYBE for boot-up times, it takes a few seconds even on beefy PCs) ... But sometimes, standalone applications are better, less resource-heavy and easy to access, not to mention FREE :D

yeah Linux. Great for games and stuff... btw. I had a virus/malware Doohicky(I'm a carguy not a computer guy, so i just read instructions). used Eset and adwcleaner(it's from malware bytes) and the computer is fine as wine

I'll agree on you with that one, but that certainly has not changed how well it performs. The upgrade to premium is well worth it.

Jacarch-Tech Thankfully the old 1.75 version of MWB still works and can still get the latest malware updates -- you just have to turn off the automatic program updates, or else it will auto-update itself to the new, ugly 2.x version.

I don't mind the look at all, in my opinion it isn't off putting at all purely because is is Malwarebytes, but in addition i'm not sure how to obtain the old one, not that it matters to me anyway:P

I really don't care about the interface, Malwarebytes' is still a great anti-malware. :p

Well, i've had this set up for years. As long as you don't have both running live at the same time. But as i have it now, i only really fire up malware bytes when i really need to use it, which lately hasn't been very much at all.

This is by far the best combo out there. I have both running simultaneously and haven't noticed any performance hit. Been virus and malware free for years

I use Avast and Windows Firewall and seen no issues, but my VM ISOs keep popping up but ONLY in .rar, .7zip, and .zip file storage folders in the Downloads folder.

+Jack Sparrow Viruses are malware. The two terms are more often than not used interchangeably. "Malware" isn't some new form of viruses that requires you to buy a special product. Malware is just the umbrella term for viruses and other malicious software (program wrote to do malicious things, like hack your computer, steal your data or password, etc.) Does that make sense?

Norton isn't a virus, it is a true anti-malware/anti-virus, look up Norton vs wannacry, Norton doesn't even allow wannacry to run at all. Plus, Norton scans downloaded files and can do whole computer scans to keep you protected.

My dad put norton on all our windows computers. I hate it because it makes it difficult to keep certain programs up to date, as it blocks installs of program versions that aren't popular enough in it's database. Never had that problem when we previously just had McAfee.

Second of all, I don't tolerate piracy unless the company behind it abandons their software or because of region-locks. Don't make such a condescending assumption just because I asked a simple question from the start. ;^) Anyway this doesn't happen very frequently and doesn't affect most of my games. However on the off chance that it has happened, it was just a small annoyance.

+hellterminator some, actually, a lot of malware pages force you to download files as soon as you open them, and those files are usually small so that before you can get out and close the page, it already downloaded them. having a decent anti-virus prevents you from downloading pretty much any malware, as most of them are old and the anti-viruses know about them. you can very easily prevent yourself from entering malware-enforcing pages though, since you'll either see that you're being re-directed to somewhere completely different (and therefore you'll have time to close the page or the browser) or you'll see a big flaw in the name of the page (a real example would be goggle instead of google, and yes, i know that goggle is a real word but still) and then you'll know that it's probably not a good website to enter. also, many browsers have in-built protection (google chrome is a very good example) and it won't let you enter some easily recognisable harmful sites. another thing to note is that adblock can prevent any spyware or anything like that which could spy on you by opening in another window without you noticing, since it's working against pop-ups and whatever unwanted content which shouldn't be on the page, and it checks what's the source of the pop-up or ad and then proceeds to block it if it conflicts with it's big database. pretty much all spyware is under that category.

If you have your browser configured to ask what to do with files being downloaded, a dialog will pop up and you will be able to cancel the download. If you have your browser configured to just automatically save everything to some folder, you _will_ be alerted when the download finishes. Then, all you have to do is not run that executable (and delete it, although you don't really have to if you want to keep it for some reason).

Mighty Wolf Developing a proper worm is extremely difficult (and therefore very expensive), so no one bothers to do that when all you have to do is set up a “free movie streaming” site which requires you to install a “plugin” to play all those free movies. Besides, all worms are developed specifically to circumvent malware protection, so running an anti-malware program won't save you either. But there's not much to worry about, the era of really bad worms like Code Red or Sapphire is long gone.

If you're using Windows XP SP2 or newer then you have a firewall, newer Windows on newer hardware has some more anti-malware-protection.

+Tuko DS I took my laptop down to a computer shop, I had AVG on it. After getting it back they'd installed SUPERAntiSpyware, they said it was by far the best and non intrusive. You sort of know the program is good when its not really nice aesthetically because they cut the crap and get the meat done right - typically nerd approach xD. After having it I've had literally no problems.

Working at a computer repair store I can confirm that it is one of the many tools our technicians employ to deal with malware. It seems particularly good at getting rid of nasty browser hi-jacks and malicious toolbars that keep coming back even after a different tool has picked up at least part of it and removed it.

I cannot say for sure on the paid version, but so far as I have experienced AVG offers little performance difference to Avast, a bit less speed than AdAware, and mixed to slower compared to MSSE. MSSE seems to sometimes be finicky on bootup while otherwise being largely faster.
