Update: I set up an antiX 23 x64 full sysvinit frugal install as intended. I rebooted to find that the volume icon had disappeared. I did try running "volumeicon &" in the terminal but it had no effect. I next checked out the antiX forum and there at the top of the list of recent posts was one titled "Disabling Pipewire in antiX-23" discussing how to remove pipewire due to issues on some laptops when booting with the more modern 6.1 kernel. The older 5.10 kernel seems to be immune. So that explains that. One post mentions how pipewire is installed for the benefit of 'non-techies' who struggle with alsa and appreciate a gui frontend to work with while 'techies' will likely just remove pipewire and stick with alsa alone. While I wouldn't describe myself as (much of) a techie, I appreciate alsa as an amputee because it allows me to automate audio re-routing while switching over the multimedia keys on the fly by running a script, to give just one example and there are numerous others. I will use this as a learning opportunity but I can see where this will likely go for me. I use the terminal at every opportunity and avoid the mouse/ touchpad wherever possible for obvious reasons. I wonder how long it would have taken me to realise that the volume icon was missing ? So check out the antiX forum. There was a time when it would have been my first port of call but I'm out of the habit these days. I guess I haven't needed it in ages. Update to the update: And of course the multimedia keys aren't working and no alsamixer. I didn't think to check those before commenting.

Did you try installing pulse audio? The volume icon should work after you do that and reboot. The volume icon won’t load unless pipe wire or pulse loads first. I’m not familiar with re-routing the multimedia keys. You could also try installing alsa. I don’t usually read the forums but I probably should. Normally, I will google or look in RU-vid for help.

If pulseaudio wasn't installed before and it didn't look like it was, this solution is like using a hammer to crack a nut. I'm not on antiX 23 so I can't test this out right now but the first thing I do on other versions is to run "volumeicon &" (without quotes) in terminal as normal user. I don't recall whether you rebooted after switching off pipewire which may have solved the problem but if restarting volumeicon in the terminal fixes it then the solution to enable it on boot will likely lay in the startup script. Hope this helps.

Yes, I rebooted several times. Pulse audio is not installed by default. The audio was still working after turning wireplumber off, so I didn’t need to install pulse audio. I should have turned on the volume icon in sys vinit instead of installing pulse audio. Thanks for commenting.

@@linuxmench2118 - I have all this to look forward to but with antiX 21 & 22 running smoothly on all my systems, I'm in no rush to switch. I enjoy your antiX and MX videos and I expect I would enjoy your others but there are only so many hours in a day 😃

@@mj-x4416 I don't know if AntiX 21 & 22 are still supported. If they are, stay with them. I don't recommend using a system that is no longer supported (receiving security updates). Thanks for the positive feedback and kind words.

If pipewire was disabled and pulseaudio was not installed. , then by default your system is using alsa. I can't remember if volumeincon works in it, so that might have been the cause of no volume icon on statusbar.

@@linuxmench2118 - Debian Bullseye LTS EOL should be sometime in 2026 so we are good for a while yet in any case.

I'm not sure why you are getting that error message. That video is 4 months old. The cpu was running high in the vm and the host machine. When I turned off pipewire, the cpu went down but volume control disappeared. When I installed pulse audio, that fixed the volume control. Pipewire causing high cpu is no longer an issue because of bug fixes in updates since that time. I recently did a fresh install off camera and that's no longer an issue. I didn't have to turn off pipewire and I didn't have to install pulse audio to get the volume control to reappear. First update your system. Secondly, try going back to that configuration file and turn on pipewire. Perhaps you don't need pulse audio since it wasn't a default app. As a last resort, you might want to do a fresh install. Hopefully, you want have to resort to that.

this is not a fix. this is just changing from the prefered pipewire audio server to pulseaudio. would have been nice to see whats causing wireplumber use that high of a resource at idle.

I don’t know why wireplumber server was causing high cpu, it wasn’t before the update. The audio was still working before I installed pulse audio. I only installed it to bring the volume control back, which I could have done another way. So, I didn’t need to install pulse audio. This I realized after publishing the video.

A real linuxer would turn off the sound services just to see the cpu running at 0%
