Anton Eberl (13 June 1765 - 11 March 1807) was an Austrian composer, teacher and pianist of the Classical period.

Ich bin, so weit ich zurückdenken kann, ein Liebhaber der klassischen Musik. Warum habe ich niemals den Namen Anton Eberl zu hören bekommen? und schon gar nichts von seiner Musik? - Auch dieses Klavierkonzert überrascht mich wieder, es ist einfach wunderbar - leicht und doch voller Kraft. Wenn mir jemand sagte, dies wäre von Mozart oder Beethoven komponiert, ich würde es ohne jeden Widerspruch akzeptieren. Die Geschichte der Wiener Klassik sollte neu geschrieben werden. Es gibt nicht nur Haydn, Mozart und Beethoven. Es gibt auch Anton Eberl. Der Name mag zunächst gewöhnungsbedürftig sein. Doch wer Klassik liebt, hat etwas verpasst, wenn er diese Musik nicht kennt.

Es gibt so wunderbare Komponisten AUSSER DEN BEKANNTEN KLASSIKERN aber sie werden nie gespielt, deshalb kennt man sie nicht. Ich habe auch erst viele von diesen hier über u.a. Hernn KulauDilfegen4 kennen gelernt und bin ihm deshalb sehr zu Dank verpflichtet. Er leistet hier eine großartige Kulturarbeit indem er diese Perlen der Musik der Vergessenheit entreisst und wir müssen ihm und den anderen die es ebenso tun, unendlich dankbar dafür sein.

Ries, Reicha, Eggert, Dittersdorf, Wöfl, and Dussek are a few more contemporaries of Beethoven who you may enjoy. There are so many that were popular in their time but have been discarded over the years.

Sie haben völlig recht ! Ein grosser Komponist, dessen Werke es verdienen würden, viel öfter gespielt zu werden . Es ist wirklich Schade, dass sie in Vergessenheit geraten sind ! Liebliche Melodien ...ohne Zweifel !!

Ja, ein sehr schönes Werk , das stimmt zweifellos ! Schade, dass all diese Komponisten so wenig bekannt sind und kaum noch gespielt werden ! Sie haben es wirklich nicht verdient, in Vergessenheit zu geraten ....!

this is 1798. This concerto was played for the first time in St.Petersbourg.

@@witoldbayerquest If Pavel Serbin says St Petersburg 1798 I believe him much more than whatever it says on the 'original' CD. I doubt this original CD was produced in 1803? ;-)

@@danielbernhardsson4883 oh but you think Pavel attended the premiere concert in 1798? ;-) Looking at further comments, Pavel also said op. 36 and apparently the Concerto is Opus 32. But one is free to believe whoever one decides!

Muito bem. Não se nota tanto assim a influência de Mozart, Haydn também está presente. E porventura Beethoven, com os três primeiros concertos. Claro, Eberl nem por isso deixa de ser reconhecível. Gostei de o ouvir.

This should be Opus 32. The Trio for Clarinet, Piano & Cell is Opus 36. Please correct.

The original CD, on Koch Schwann Musica Mundi 3-6763-2, gives it as opus 32, not 36

A very attractive work. The sound of the piano is a little too dominant - and in any case it would have been nice to hear a period piano here.

i dont think pianos (pianoforte) were invented when this piece was produced. I believe it would be fortepiano. I agree with him that it would sound better. However, this performance is still great and I dont mind the piano at all! The performer plays with the same staccato to mimic the forte piano.

Not to disparage the composer, it sounds like it's just following the mold, no trailblazing harmonies and progressions though not as vapid as I feared. The writing and musical content though trying to sound dramatic albeit contrived, is very typical of the day I suppose, and many of the piano runs and acrobatic scales seem to have been inspired by either Thalberg or Czerny or Cramer, while the entire structure seem to have been inspired by Mozart's students, and I wouldn't discount Weber's influence either albeit juvenile in some parts. Over all, no outstanding musical theme or landmark pianistic writing that come from the likes of Hummel and Field. It's a charming piece indeed, but lacks the factor that piques the interest of the listeners to want them to listen to it time and time again. The first movement solo cadenza initially gives the impression it has more to offer but sadly, fails to take off. The last movement sounds very invigorating after the lulling effect of the middle movement, and may be the only interesting part of the whole composition. My conclusion: it's nice but one listening is enough.

And composed before Thalberg was born, and before Czerny had written any concertos - he was just 7 years old when the Eberl was written! Maybe Cramer had his 1st concerto out by the late 1790s. This concerto isn't bad at all, well written, and yes in keeping with Beethoven 2 and the two early Hummel concertos. I think Eberl acquits himself rather well.

Matthew Cosgrove I agree my timeline for the composers may be off, it's probably just to show my mediocre knowledge of that century's stock of composers. In fact, my only inclination to "learn more" about them was due to a decline in interest for the more truly major ones which one hears almost ubiquitously. I need something to spike my interest in the obscure works that wouldn't have to be of the German, French or Italian schools. Incidentally, that brought me to Kuhlau and Dussek, and later, Franz Xaver Mozart (only to explore his talent). I guess these are my flimsy excuses for even wandering off to "unchartered" musical grounds, just to find something of curiosity and delight. Other than that I wouldn't dream to pretend to post as a musicologist or pedagogue. Thanks for correcting my timelines. Have a wonderful listening time.

I don't think progressiveness was ever a requirement in composers at that time. Maybe yes if you want to get remembered, but people want familiar yet different music in the composer's lifetime, and its also his way of living as a composer so he probably didn't take much risks to this one since he might get bad reception or not satisfying his patron. He's also a student of Mozart and some of his works sometimes gets labelled as by Mozart so that might explain the style too. His later pieces, like the Eflat Symphony does get more daring than this one though.

I don't hear anything here I would describe as contrived. As for the lack of progressive harmonies, consider this is from the heart of the Classical period and not the era of fast evolving Romanticism. Perhaps your critique would make sense for a composer after about 1820 due to the increasing influence of Beethoven. I would also say this piece reminds me of something Schubert might have written mid-career, which of course would mean in his mid-20's.

he was a good buddy of Mozart. One of his piano sonatas was called Mozart 20 for 150 years. He toured with Constanze and Junior after Mozart's death.

@@tonyprost5575 oh true, he may have been his pupil since as early as 1781. My point was that passage sounds way too familiar, I think it's a quite extensive quote, I just cannot remember which concerto it comes from.

At this time Beethoven wrote 3.pianoconcert and get 10 out of 0 - 10 (Eberl got 0).

No question a pretty concerto, but the style is about 50 years too late. Even Mozart was falling out of style around the time he died. The formidable contributors to late classical piano speak to Beethoven, Schubert, Dussek, Moscheles (I may have left someone out...).

That's the worst comment I've seen in a long time. Three most performed concerti of the late Classical period were Mozart's D minor and C minor along with Hummel's A minor. Beethoven's concerti are so poorly imitating Mozart's they are not considered influential at all by some musicologists, just like Beethoven's vocal works.

This is a good performance but I don't really like the work. It sounds like somebody doing a bad job of imitating Mozart. The melodies are tedious and their development is not impressive at all. That said, I like his later works.

Well Eberl was a pupil of Mozarts afterall....his earlier C major Symphony from the 1780s was misattributed to Mozart for quite some time. Mozart highly respected Eberl and I can see why.
