Anton had been with the band for a year, and it was time for him to finally speak up. That happened on March 31, 1987, during a segment of New Gift Items. Then-Head Writer Steve O'Donnell told me in 2000 that it was his idea for Anton to finally say something: "It was just a simple way to say 'Thanks.'"
With Writers Adam Resnick and Joe Toplyn, and the voice of Dave's assistant Laurie Diamond. Hiding behind the tables were crew members Francis Ulrich and John Casabona.
Anton then reprised his role as New Gift Items Interrupter the following November 25.

There's something about Anton's naive South African accent that cracks me up. The (seemingly) unrehearsed aspect of this is just comedy gold. "Dave, we should have jokes more often!" ROFL

Did Joan Jett make any appearances other than in the late 80s? Pat Benatar?

Oh, man. I remember some of these like they were on last week. “I didn’t realize, that was, uh, very funny.”

Don, what is your favorite house band on Letterman A. Frank Owens and the Symphony Orchestra B. Paul Shaffer and the World's Most Dangerous Band Or C. Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra.

Well, they each had their particular purposes. While I found Owens' band pretty bland in their song interpretations, I think that was their charter, since they were playing to a 10 am audience. I can't fault them for that. The 4-piece band remains my favorite; it allowed the players to stretch out and bounce off one another. Plus the challenge of arranging a more fuller sound to four instruments seemed staggering, but I thought they were tremendous. And their charter -- to play for a 12:30 am audience -- gave them room to breathe. The CBS Orchestra was a different beast, here playing for what was perceived at the time as an 11:30 crowd, and I sense they adjusted to fit that particular charter. Not as adventurous as the WMDB, basically due to its larger ensemble, but the arrangements were amazing, and they were powerful when heard in the theater. Keep in mind I'm talking out of my ass; I've no authority on any of this. But since you asked my favorite period, without a doubt B.

@@dongiller I agree. I think they should have stayed with the 4 piece at CBS with added horns and then padded it when necessary. That CBS orchestra was a confused 'Tonight Show' imitation that drowned out the main players of WMDB.

The cuckoo clock segment reminds me of that tragedy.
