He did in the mid 90's. His line was called State of Montana. It was sold at Henri Bendel. He even had his own shop on the main floor for a brief time. The line was amazing, but unfortunately fashion & the world was changing and I think he was close to retiring at that point. Claude Montana was an incredible talent indeed. I wore his cologne when it came out. Few remenber that.
great list, i love: Montana; GianFranco Ferre; Azzedine Alaia; and YSL (we have so much in common some of the same designers on our lists). I do have more (Valentino, Jacqueline De Ribes, Carolyne Roehm, Mugler, Geoffrey Beene, Carolina Hererra, and a host of others)
like any collection, there are the amazing showpieces few can or will wear. the cool thing about Montana's clothes was that the boldness translated to the simpler garments as well without losing the sculptural character. You can recognize Montana by the cut instantly, the lines are fluid structures...
WOW; such an amazing man with a specific vision, i just want to see as many shows as i can, i would LOVE to see his couture shows for Lanvin, but they aren't on here at least the last time i searched, i loved how he works fur; just AMAZING!
I'd say, all scuptural designers and those who work from cut and material, but to name a top 5: Montana, Mugler, Alaia, Mme Gres, McQueen (who was very inspired by Montana btw) but Charles James, Galliano, and YSL belong also to the list
I think, from what I've read that he is retired. In New York his clothes were carried by Charivari & Bergdorf Goodman and a store called IF in Soho, maybe Bagutta as well. His singlass were made by Alain Mikli- they were expensive, but they were so hot looking.
wow, but do you think if he made a comeback he would be well received, he was amazing, i just think after the time away, a comeback would be gr8 for him, he gave so much and was so innovative, i have never see anything like him . . .thnx for the reply
Thank you so much for posting this. I was studying fashion illustration in 1984 and I thought Montana was incomparable. All of the top girls of the day are in this show. Dalma, Diana Dewitt, Pat Cleveland, Betty Lago, Ana Bayle and where was Iman? What was that Indian girls name? Gurmit?
Yes they were (the sunglasses) i saw them on some site and fell instantly in lov ew/them. He was just wonderful and amazing his work was extraordinary, i'm just a big fan and i just could cry becuase his clothes were just so awesome to me growing up in the 80s and seeing those futuristic clothes; but i would often wonder, where do you where them? they are so crafted that it would be hard for an average woman to carry them off, LOL . .
I wish i had bought it, was it the 80s? i was a teen then so i wasn't much into colognes as i am now. Wow, but i think now if he came back, maybe toned down the shoulder pads he would be amazing? or do u think that his time has come and gone? I loved the glasses that he did in the 80s, i wish i could find them somewhere on eBay.
the Montana company wasn't doing that well and was bought by an investor for the prestige and to give his daughter something to do. Montana was forced out and the company is now dormant in a very luxurious building in Paris...
