Sergei Rachmaninoff - Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
1:03 I. Largo - Allegro moderato
20:02 II. Allegro molto
30:27 III. Adagio
44:55 IV. Allegro vivace
Rachmaninoff‘s Symphony No. 2 was written during the composer‘s years at the Saxon residency. The premiere of his 1st symphony had received such harsh criticism that it took months of revision until Rachmaninoff was finally satisfied with his 2nd Symphony, which he conducted himself for the premiere and which received great applause. Because of its formidable length, Symphony No. 2 has been the subject of many revisions, particularly in the 1940s and 1950s, which reduced the piece from nearly an hour to as little as 35 minutes. On this recording, the work can be enjoyed in its entirety.

Thank you, EuroArts Channel, for making it still accessible to all who were not at the concert! Like two geniuses, one soul: the composer and Maestro Pappano, plus an orchestra capable to read and follow the conductor’s vision of the piece.

An outstanding account of a symphony that maintains its soul and meaning. Dresden and Pappano are wonderful. Tutti bravi!

First movement should be "largo", not "largo"....lovely symphony, nonetheless, and Pappano a great conductor.
