Antonio Salieri (1750-1825)
Piano Concerto in C major
Cadenzas & Fermatas: Max Uriarte
1.Allegro maestoso
2.Larghetto
3.Andantino (Rondo)
Max Uriarte, piano
Orquestra de Câmara Theatro São Pedro
Antonio Borges-Cunha, conductor
Porto Alegre, June 2013
The musical work of Antonio Salieri consists mainly of operas and sacred music. Among its sparse instrumental production are two concerts for fortepiano and orchestra - one in C major and the other in B flat major - written in 1773. These two works are prior to the concert n ° 9 KV 271 ("Jeunehomme") of Mozart written in 1777, which represents a true milestone in the evolution of the concerto for piano and orchestra. These two concerts, Salieri reveals one fully knowledgeable composer of his craft, possessing strong technical and melodic natural endowment. And it is in the slow movements he makes special use of this cantabilidade, clearly showing the influence of his vocal melodismo, lavish in belcantistas details.
The Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in C major begins with an Allegro maestoso, whose thematic material exhibits rhythmic great wealth in the midst of a remarkable pianistic writing brilliance. The atmosphere changes dramatically in the second movement, a Larghetto 'alla Sicilian "in A minor, in which Salieri opposes elegiac singing the solo instrument to the mysterious" pizzicato "the strings, creating a dialogue of fantastic effect. Is it perhaps possible to foresee the extraordinary adagio from concerto No. 23 KV 488 by Mozart, written much later in 1786. Interestingly, this second movement of the concerto Salieri was used in the movie "Iron Man 1" , 2008, in a scene between the protagonist and his nemesis, who sits at the piano and performs a few bars of this Larghetto. The final movement, Andantino (then equivalent to an Allegretto), is a stylized minuet form of rondo, whose charm lies in delightful contrast between the refrain and his gallant three different episodes, always entrusted to the soloist. In this work, Salieri realizes a true synthesis of his art, applying his skills as a composer of music for theater in concert for piano, thus renewing in an extremely personalized way the relationship between soloist and orchestra.
Text: Max Uriarte

It's nice to hear some pianists out there are willing to keep Salieri's music alive. I've attended 2 music conservatories and have 30 years at the piano and in that time, heard Salieri's name brought up only once. Brilliant classical playing. Bravo.

37 operas.Only 2 pf concerti, the triple concerto rec. by Holliger,4 major liturgical works no mature symphonies or quartets . Meaning the greater output of operas would be his legacy and producing operas is expensive. We don't hear either Josef or MichaelHadyn's operas nor Cimarosa or any of Schubert or early or late classical operas except Mozart . Pergolesi's genius means we hear him (the choral works sometimes and fantastic opera Serva Padrona but noone else besides Mozart in this era. I think that makes sense considering . The 2nd mov of CM concerto is well worth hearing but Mozart's K.488 slow mov . also in 6/8 is a better bet !

I'm not really knowledgable in classical music or in music in general that much. I just love listening to some of them and Liszt and Mozart are my favorite. But lately, I heard Salieri's music and I enjoyed it. I think he will be one of my favorite as well.

I love the style of Mr. Maiestro Salieri! He is far less excited, grown-up, more serious than Mozart's. I also love Mozart. But you can not compare the two. Everyone has their own style of brilliance. In Salieris works, there is a mixture of myth, primordial power, mysticism and timeless meditation. The timeless moment is present in Mozart's works. Two different focuses.

Having heard the 'greats' like Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin et al, my discovery of Salieri (and also Borchcherini) has opened up fresh vistas. I find Salieri more palatable, somehow, than Mozart. Is he simpler?? While I spend more time on western rock and some Indo classical, Salieri becomes a kind of sweet interlude of sorts. Thanks for uploading! And thanks, Humanity, for You Tube!

The concerto in C is more interesting than the Bb concerto, in my opinion. Both were more likely written for harpsichord since Stein of England didn't come out with his pianoforte till 1777. Salieri was also some kind of wunderkind, but doesn't get much credit for it. Keep in mind that he composed this and 3 other concerti in the same year at age 23. The program notes here are very useful and the performance and cadenzas of Max Uriarte are quite good.

Aceitem que Mozart aprendeu tudo com mestres italianos!...SALIERI was the greatest Master of Music in Vienna in the second half of the 8th century...The Italian pianoforte was already well advanced with CLEMENTI around 1770!
